Downloading mail status bar

Outlook627
I have noticed that recently when downloading mail the Outlook Express

status box no longer shows how much of the email has been downloaded like it

used to. It just fills up all the bar at once when it has finished instead

of gradually increasing as it downloads. Anybody know why this has started

to happen and if there is an answer to it?

Re:Downloading mail status bar

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main

Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity

(File>Identities>Add new identity). Assuming all is well, import messages

from the old Identity before deleting it (File>Identities>Manage

Identities).

Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local

folders created for this purpose.

Disable Background Compacting and frequently perform a manual compact of all

OE folders while "working offline". More at

http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm.

Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such

corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

I'm not seeing a backround compacting tool

in my maintainance options, I know it used

to be there... but not anymore. Due to this, I

have been unable to install the OEtoolbar

from one of the MVP sites. I get a warning

saying I can't install it til backround compacting

is turned off. I get this message even when OE

isn't running. What gives? It can't be running *all*

the time.

You might have stated you were running OE6 SP2, Leigh. (I can tell both

Putting the OEToolbar problem aside for the moment, doesis everything

running as expected after creating and using a new Named Identity?

Re:Downloading mail status bar

If OETool won't run after installing SP2, then you need to change the

following registry key manually:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0

Where GUID represents the Identity number.

Find the value under that key for "Background Compaction" and change it to

zero. Then OETool will run.

Re:Downloading mail status bar

I was under the impression that you (Leigh) were the Original Poster (OP) in

this thread (Lynn W). I find it highly unusual that you SP2 identity still

would have Background Compacting enabled (See Steve's reply). If your other

"test" identity does not have the same problem with uninstalling OETool, I

would think your original one might be corrupted, so yes, start using either

the test identity or another new Named Identity. Import messages from the

old one and then delete the old one.

Did you by chance miss Steve's (author of OETool) post here?...

<quote>

Yes, That was why I "butted" into the thread.
