- Windows Vista >> using microsoft office 2003 allong side of microsoft works with Vista Home Premium?Have a Dell laptop that has Microsoft Works installed. Want to install
Microsoft Office Professional 2003. Do I need to uninstall Works prior to
installing Office? Can I leave works on mach. and install office too? Reason
I would like to keep works is I haven't had a chance to use it . It came
installed on my laptop from Dell. My desktop has the Office Professional on
it and all my data bases are made in office. Could wait I suppose? If anyone
has information on this I would appreciate your advise! Thank you in
advance!

- Windows Vista >> Path Copy and URL CopyHow do you use PathCopy from NinoTech and URL Copy from Moonsoftware in
Vista?
When you right click on the *.INF file there is now no install.
In XP if you right clicked on a link you could Open or Open in new window.
How do you get his to work in Vista?
So many things that worked so easily in XP are just a nightmare in Vista.
Thankfully the new laptop I just purchased from Toshiba came with a full
version of XP as well. I am not far off formatting and installing XP. I
don't think this is about not getting to grips with Vista, it is everything
is so unbelievably complex and so difficult to do. The only thing I can say
I really like in Vista to XP is Windows Mail - and that is presently the
only thing keeping me using Vista.

- Windows Vista >> Vista 64bit Search Does not FunctionHi,
This has been driving me crazy - crazy enough to make a post to see if
anyone has any ideas about this issue.
I have Vista 64 bit and it will not allow me to do any searches. When I
select Start --> and type anything in the Start Search box, the
magnifying glass turns into an X and it wont let me hit enter or begin a
search. The same happens when I actually select Start --> Search. If I
click on "See All Results" after typing something in, I get an error
that gets cut off but here is the just of it:
....'query=cmd&subquery=C%3A%5CUsers%5CSteve%5CSearches%5CIndexed%
20Locations...' The specified path does not exist. Check the path and
try again.
I checked the path as far as I can see up to Indexed Locations the
directory does exist and has proper permissions.
I have Vista on a second computer and this works fine on that one - but
on this one its a no go.
Any thoughts would be appreciated....
:)

- Windows Vista >> Internet Explorer shuts down and restartsHi All
Having had an unstable XP when I upgraded to Vista, I had to opt eventually
to back up files, then format my C:\ (wipe the old OS) and then reinstall
Vista from scratch. I have a lot of drive space, software installed, so I
really try hard to avoid reinstalling again and again, mainly as its fairly
quick putting Windows back on, but the time taken resetting up everything
else I try to avoid.
Having had a stable PC for a week or two and then allowing Vista to download
updates when needed, I have not installed anything on here between the week
it was last stable and the problem I am experiencing now.
I currently have Norton 360, which keeps all dodgy spyware out, its running
with Defender, plus I have external software in the form of Spybot S & D,
Spyware Blaster, Spyhunter to name a few!
The symptoms initially were IE7 displaying "Internet Explorer is not
responding" then a pause, and "Internet Explorer is restarting", sometimes
even closing down the restarted IE7 starts it round again!
All the spyware, virus software has been run over the PC regularly (all
those listed above and others!) and fail to find the villain, initially it
was moaning that NTDLL.DLL was causing the fault, however with the spyware
cleaning, its now stuck and only restarts on MSXML3 being the reason for the
fault and restart, I have installed NET 3.5 beta 2, although I notice
(Although I didnt install it) NET 1 is installed, so I assume some
application I have needs it or installs it as default. Question: Do you need
all progressive NETs installed? i.e. if you have 3.5 installed, do you need
1.0?
The problem hasnt gone away, Microsoft have had a ticket raised about 7 days
ago, at present I am working to get/arrange a suitable time for them to call
me when I am in front of the PC, since its the evening UK time, so I have to
work with their support help desk who run at different times.
I did a lot of digging on the web re the MSXML problem, so far I have found
one message from someone to say they had the same problem, the PC was stable
after a rebuild, but after a week of updates it did what my PC is doing, it
seems to be "hardware, PC specific".
Any ideas or comments / suggestions re fixing the problem? since its driving
me nuts since it tends to restart in the middle of my completing a form for
an online purchase or something!!
I can post the exact error messag from the event viewer if needed.

- Windows Vista >> MSINET.OCX dependenciesI have a VB6 program which I sell for designing certain kinds of lathe
projects. My development base is an XP2 machine with MSDN installed.
Naturally, nothing fails on my machine.
Recently I added automatic program updating to the programs features using
the Internet Transfer Control (MSINET.OCX). MSINET.OCX is included in my
installation process and the program works fine on XP based machines. It does
not run on all Vista machines. On the erroring machines the message displayed
is "Component MSINET.OCX or one of its dependencies not correctly regestered:
a file is missing or invalid". Now I know that the component is present in
the same folder as the application and I know that wininet.dll is also
present on the target machines. Dependency Walker, run on my development
machine tells me nothing of interest even in the profiling mode and I don't
have a Vista machine to check on.
Can anyone help

- Windows Vista >> disable welcome screenHi,
I want to disable my welcome screen (I am the only user on this computer)
and go straight to the desktop after boot. Help says that you can't do this
in Vista, but I saw the option to disable it when I was getting tech support
from Dell for another issue. I just don't remember where the option was to
uncheck the box. Can anyone help me please?

- Windows Vista >> Realtek HD Audio ManagerWhat is Realtek HD Audio Manager?
After I installed more memory, when I clicked on the speaker icon in the
lower right it said nothing was detected. So I took the CD that came with
the PC (DELL Insperion 530). When I installed the driver I got the Realtek.
I don't understand how that happened.

- Windows Vista >> Rename PCHi everybody,
Is it safe to change the PCs name in the system settings?
I remember in W2K there was an issue with renaming the PC. There was a tool
necessary (I forgot the name) to change the name completely.
FYI: The PC has got a virgin instalation, no software installed. I would
like to duplicate the installation on 30 PCs and punch in the activation key
later.
Thanks for your time.

- Windows Vista >> Vista Backup Failure 0x80070057When I click on the Backup icon, I no longer get the backup wizard but
instead get the message
"The backup application could not start due to an internal error. The
parameter is incorrect (0x80070057). Please check your system configuration
and try again".
This is with Vista Home Premium 32-bit. It used to work until my USB backup
drive filled up, and after I changed to a larger USB backup drive. Switching
back to my original USB backup drive now produces the same message.
Where or how can I find out how to correct this problem?

- Windows Vista >> Vista crashes on Administrator LoginI have Vista Business (x86) on a P4 with 1Gb RAM.
It is a member of a domain with a Windows Server 2003 R2 controller (and a
Server 2003 R1 co-controller).
When I log in as an ordinary user, it is quite stable (using
Access/SQLServer/Visual Studio/Office 2k7 etc etc) although it may crash
occasionally (more than XP Pro).
When I log in as Administrator, either local or domain, it crashes everytime
with a blue screen just after startup. I feel fairly sure it was OK when
first installed.
Anyone else suffering from this affliction?

- Windows Vista >> vista not remembering folder settingsWhy does Vista not remember folder settings? I am really fed up with this. I

Is there something wrong with my Vista setup, or is this an unfixable Vista

When it comes out at the end of the month, download the iso, burn it and
try it. Even in beta Hardy is much better at detecting & configuring
hardware than Gutsy.
But why limit yourself to just Ubuntu. There are some distros out right
now that do a very good job with detection hardware. For my computer
PCLOS Gnome and OpenSuse worked very well.
Go to http://distrowatch.com/ and try a bunch of LiveCD distros and see
which one works the best for you.

Only three weeks to go before it's Independence Day for Alias. Imagine
another release of the TOY OS they call Ubuntu. It is so screwed up, they
have to keep making major releases every 6 months. I guess they just can't
get it right.
Ubuntu is a FREE product that NOBODY wants. Go figure. Just think. Alias

People with brains and intelligence want Ubuntu. Clueless idiots like you

Think of Operation Systems in political terms. Linux is a grass roots

Yep, its name is Vista!

Actually, Ubuntu is geared more to the average PC user. Most "geeks"
would more than likely use another distro like Slack or Gentoo.

What kind of "institution?" And institution of higher learning?
Alias is continuing to learn a new way of computing, while you gave up
in frustration after only a couple of days.
I'm sorry, but I respect Alias much more than you, as at least Alias has
the perseverance to improve his computing knowledge, while all you do is
put him down for what you cannot and/or are too unwilling do for yourself.

How could they, when the only example of innovation they have is the
unethical business practice of polishing the same old turd to sell as a

LOL! With your logic, you should be using DOS as all the upgrades all
the way to Vista is Microsoft not being to "get it right".

You don't understand (again), we want to promote Ubuntu to the hapless
Vista users who are sick of Microsoft's intrusive tactics, viruses and
malware. It's a noble cause, something about which you obviously know
nothing.

No, you just don't have a clue. There is nothing wrong with promoting
Ubuntu, but you are promoting Ubuntu in the vista group. People already
have Vista and/or XP. The user wants help with their product and the last
thing they want to hear about is some POS TOY OS called Ubuntu.
You are here to cause trouble. There is no proof that anybody you preach to
has dumped Vista and moved to that sorry excuse of an OS called Ubuntu. You
would be better served promoting Ubuntu out on the streets.
You disguise trolling and annoying as a noble cause. You certainly are
skewed in your thinking. But of course, you use Ubuntu!

Yes, this is a Vista group. Offering people a choice of a different OS,
when they are totally frustrated with Vista, can be quite helpful to
those disaffected Vista users.
If you don't like choice being presented to the members of this group,
then why do you continues to read posts from those who are advocates of
choice?
Do you enjoy torturing yourself? Do you self-flagellate every night
before bed too?

Wrong. It's the last thing you MicroSycophants want to hear about.

Yeah, Spanky & Frank are a real calming influence on this group. No
trouble there, just move along!

Actually the last time someone mentioned that, a lurker did come out and
say that they did just that, dumped Vista for Ubuntu, thanks to Alias.

How do you know he does do that too? Why limit where one promotes?
> You disguise trolling and annoying as a noble cause.
No, you confuse advocacy with trolling, when that advocacy is not for
your precious MS.
> You certainly are
> skewed in your thinking.
Again No. You are. The more pressure that MS feels from consumers the
more likely they will respond to consumers complaints. And that is good
for all consumers of MS products.
So in your vain efforts to try to squash all criticism of MS in this
group, the only people you are hurting is yourself and every user of MS
products.
You act against your own self-interest, and that the kind of thing that
is really skewed.
> But of course, you use Ubuntu!
But of course, you couldn't figure it out, and are trapped into using MS
technology only?
Say you and Alias were coming to me for a job. All things are equal
between you, except Alias has a more well-rounded computing knowledge
because he knows more than just how to use a computer MS's way.

You hire the person who has the technology and experience to do the job. If
a Microsoft shop advertises for a developer, some Ubuntu putz isn't going to
apply. If someone advertises for a Linux job, a MS person isn't going to
apply. I go after Micrsoft jobs because they pay!

LOL! See you'd let your obvious MS-Bias influence your decision.
To answer my own question. If you and Alias have the same knowledge of
the Windows platform, and the ONLY difference between you is that Alias
has shown the desire to learn other ways of doing things, then I choose
the person that has proven that they have both the ability and the
desire to expand their knowledge beyond the other.
IOWs, you don't get the job, Billy.

That would be true in any case. You just figured that one out? But in your
case you wouldn't be hiring because you would be working the counter at
McDonald's and you can't hire or fire anyone. Your claim to fame is, "Scuse

Sorry, I was just thinking about what your job in life would be. I looked
at your postings and figured out what you could probably do in life. What I
came up with I do believe is the top of your skill set. I didn't think about
the burrito angle. Maybe to get that job at McDonald's, you probably worked
at Taco-Bell. Remember, think outisde the bun as they say.
Just think, maybe one day, you can advance to crew chief. I do believe you
might be able to handle a job like that, but it would take years of training
for you. Stick with your current position and who knows.

I bet you eat the food that people that do work in fast food restaurants
make.
Why do you hate and look down on people that work hard for their daily
bread?
You see, Billy. You are the joke. Anyone who is that uncaring about
those less fortunate than they are is nothing more than a sad, pathetic
excuse for a human being.
You must be a Christian. Am I right?

Because everyone in the Ubuntu group has heard of Ubuntu, of course! I
post here to let all the frustrated Vista users know that there is a
better alternative to Windows.

Sorry to burst your bubble. I am not Christian. I am not talking about
those less fortunate. I am talking about YOU. I don't eat in fast food
restaurants very often because I try to eat healthy. I don't look down on
people who work in that capacity but for the most part, you don't have to be
educated to work there.
I was speaking of your abilities and if you read what I wrote, you would
understand the content. If you need more explanation, please let me know
and I will try to help you out.
By the way, one of my kids worked in a fast food restaurant while he was
going to school. It was a good job for him but a stepping stone.
There are lots of less fortunate people around. What comes to mind are the
Ubuntu users!!!
Have a nice day.

Actually when I think of those 2 butt-buddies, I visualize Billy leaning
across a table with his ass wide open and his buddy Francis pumping from
behind. To get Francis to cum, Billy yells out "babababa". Or maybe
it's "daddy please stop"? One or the other, should get Francis off.
Cheers.

like you said you would? Just FYI. Did they laugh in your face and hang up
on you? Just FYI.
You are a right wing wacko. Just FYI.

Yeah, they miss out on fighting with WPA, WGA, DRM, viruses, trojans,
root kits, becoming part of a herd bot and the infamous BSOD. Really
unfortunate, those Linux users to miss out on all the fun.

So, MS can con a lot of people. Do you think you're telling me something
I don't already know? Do you think they are the first to con the masses?
Recent mortgage crisis ring a bell? Let's take you, for instance.
They've conned you hook, line and sinker and look how charming you've

My money is on Alias, because you are a ball-less wonder. I think your

default location eveything works fine.
I would like to keep these folders on the network, but by changing the
location to a network drive this error happens.
I am using Windows Vista 32 business edition on a Windows 2003 network. I
have full control of the network drive (I am the administrator). The only
thing I can figure out is that the drive is not mapped until after I log in,
and that windows has a problem with that when starting up and then continues
to have a problem with it if you try to install programs.
Why when installing a new program does it look for those folders I have no
idea, but if someone has figured out a way around this (other than putting
the folders back to their default), please let me know.
