- Windows Vista >> Vista slow internetI'm running two machines on a network with a D-Link Router attached to the
internet via a Hughesnet HN7000S Satellite Modem. My ISP service should be
around 1000kbps down and 200 up. I'm actually getting in the 500 to 700 range
down on my XP Pro machine and consistently around 200kbps less on my new
Vista Ultimate machine. My upload speeds are around 15 to 30 on the XP and 12
to 18 on the Vista. Obviously part of my problem is Hughesnet (my ISP) but
why would Vista be consistently slower than XP on the same network and same
modem?

- Windows Vista >> Improve Vista File Transfers...!As Dvorak mentions, Vista's file transfer methods are terrible in more than
one way. Examples:
You try to copy a folder. It says, not necessarily at the beginning, "Do
you want to merge these folders?" It should check for mergeable folders at
the start of the transfer. About five minutes later, when it comes to a
duplicate file, it says "Do you want to replace $File1 with $File2?" Again,
it should check for ALL of these criteria before moving/copying anything,
right at the beginning. I usually copy a multi-GB folder and leave for a
while after clicking "Yes to all" on a prompt. I come back later to find
that my files have not yet copied and there is yet another prompt. In
conclusion, when I move a file, it will make the "done" sound, but then wait
at the end of the loading bar for a few seconds.
MS, please hear my cries and fix this. Remember to vote for this suggestion
if you agree.

- Windows Vista >> "Visual Styles" on Vista?Hi,
On Windows XP you could install visual styles which changed the way
everything looks. What's the similar thing on Vista, and are there
visual styles available for Vista also? I know there's programs like
WindowBlinds that does the same thing, but I was wondering more about
the visual styles for Windows iteslf.

- Windows Vista >> Vista Disk Read error after removing xp driveWell this is strange, I added a new drive for a vista install, in bios
I changed to boot order so it would become the default boot disk, then
proceeded to install and use vista. When I whated to run xp I would
shut down and change the boot order and all is well.
SO now I want to remove the xp drive all together from the machine.
when I power on, and the machine only reports 1 drive and it is the
default drive to boot from, so all ok.
but when it goes to boot, it reports disk read error. I did a boot
from the vista dvd and tried a repair but the repair program found no
errors. so I can't boot vista unless I have the xp disk installed.
any way to fix this or do I need to do a reformat/install ?
thanks

- Windows Vista >> Audio arrangement not perfectIn MS vista home premium, as with all of the vista
series, MS should have left the audio control alone . It is
called mixer. In XP the user could still use the custom
mixer suite included with the cards drivers, which would
allow some users to access the 'bridged mode' and recording
from the internet. In vista this is completely excluded,
which is ludicrous at best. Way to turn people off MS.

- Windows Vista >> 'read only' folder cannot be unlockedMy email client writes spelling corrections to a .tlx file in a folder that
Vista has marked 'read only' . I have tried to uncheck the 'read only',
authorized everybody to do everything (I am desperate!), even did it all again
with UAC off, but the folder remains 'read only' . I can manually change and
save the .tlx file, but that is not what I want to do. I am logged in as
administrator and using Vista Home Premium.
Can someone tell me how to unlock the folder?
Thank you.

- Windows Vista >> Annoying Challenge ?I am running Vista Bus. I have 1 program in my start-up group which seems to
get challenged every day or so.
Is there a way to stop that annoying "Allow/Disallow" Challenge? Also I have
1 website that when Protected mode is on causes IE7 to go totally nuts. It
tries opening the page over and over and over again. Until I force all the
pages to close. It seems to only be that 1 page, aol.com. I am also working
w/Symantec on this b/c Norton360 likes turning it back on. Any feedback is
appreciated.

- Windows Vista >> No PCMCIA after installing Vista SP1Ever since installing SP1 for Vista, I can't use the PCMCIA ports on
my Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop. They were working fine with Vista until
I installed SP1.
I have a PCMCIA to USB 2.0 adapter, and a PCMCIA to CompactFlash
adapter. When they stopped working after installing SP1, I thought
maybe they were incompatible, so I went to Fry's and bought new ones
that both said they were compatible with Vista.
But I have the same problem with the new ones.
I also have a USB flash drive. It still works fine in the built-in USB
1.1 port, but no longer lights up in the USB 2.0 adapter for the
PCMCIA port. It worked fine there before installing SP1.
Device manager shows no problem at all -- nothing yellow or red.
I tried uninstalling the PCMCIA drivers and rebooting. It reinstalled
them, and they say they're working fine in Device Manager, but still
the same problem.
I tried uninstalling all USB stuff and rebooting. It reinstalled the
USB stuff, and everything still looks fine in Device Manager, but it
still didn't work.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Greg

Windows Vista >> Power Options
Does your laptop have Power Settings in the BIOS? Some do and
does Sony have a utility for changing some systematic functions? My
Toshiba does.

Windows Vista >> Power Options
Anthony - Vista default setting for all "group policy" setting is "not
configured" - no acrtion required on your part. In additon many policies
function only in a "domain" environment and not "locally"
Also in Vista Standard - non-Administrator- users can mange almost all power
management settings on their computer. There are advanced settings that the
Standard user can also configure
Regarding Powercfg.exe - there are some settings that require running from
an "elevated command prompt" - keep in mind that as an Adminstrator you do
not automatically do so (e.g. elevated prompt).
You are probably aware that it (Powercfg.exe) uses Windows GUIDs - it does
upport "aliases (command "powercfg.exe -aliases) for common GUIDs.

- Windows Vista >> simultaneous versions of explorer.exeHas anyone else encountered this whilst using Windows Vista Home Premium...
I noticed in the task manager on several occasions 2 versions of
'explorer.exe' running simultaneously but I have no idea how or why.
I am able however to close one of them without any incident but it's
becoming frustrating always having to do so...I just wondered if anyone knew
why this was happening or how to stop it.
I've done the usual checks for viruses and spyware but they report nothing
untoward.
many thanks in advance.
Stephen.

- Windows Vista >> Audio captures getting corrupted - How can I debug or fix?I'm trying to do a project which involves making long audio recordings
for later analysis. I'd been hoping to record these on my PC digitally,
so that they can be easily processed in software. However, the
recordings keep getting corrupted (I get extremely loud crackles and
pops occasionally - once or twice an hour, sometimes less frequently).
The glitches occur in all recording software that I've tried (e.g.
audacity) and also in some in-house written software (in both WDM and
DirectX versions). A debug version of the in-house software reports no
abnormal behaviour, lag or errors at the time of the corruption.
The corruption has a fairly characteristic waveform - it looks as though
a few hundred samples have simply been discarded, or sometimes, as if a
block of samples have been recorded at the wrong point in the buffer.
(Unfortunately, this is a limitation of my debug method, as I'm
recording a test tone to identify the corruption automatically).
The problem occurs identically with both on-board HD audio and a PCI
creative X-Fi, and occurs at all sample rates and bit-depths.
The problem cannot be reproduced at will - i.e. it cannot be reproduced
by deliberate high CPU load, high disk load, or high graphics load.
System specifications:
CPU: C2D E6600 (not overclocked)
Mobo: Asus P5B-Deluxe (tried multiple BIOS revisions)
RAM: 2 GB PC 6400 (thoroughly tested with Memtest86+ and Windows memory
diagnostic)
Graphics: Nvidia 8800 GTX 768 MB
Sound: On-board SoundMAX audio and Creative X-Fi Xtremegamer (multiple
driver versions, including beta)
OS: Vista Home premium 32 bit
I'm at a loss as to how to debug further, or how to fix this. Does
anyone have any bright ideas?
I've been thinking about rewriting the capture software to use Vista's
WASAPI audio system - but I'm not sure that will fix the problem (i.e.
the problem is more fundamental - e.g. it's a Vista audio mixer problem,
or it's a hardware bug) and don't want to invest a non-trivial amount of
time in a non-solution.

- Windows Vista >> What Kevin Putzke has when he works with Vista, Ubuntu and Windows 2008 ServerThe Kevin Putzke Syndrome is a term used when a person has certain
limitations in mental functioning and in skills such as communicating,
taking care of him or herself, and social skills. These limitations will
cause a poster to learn and develop more slowly than a typical poster.
Former Postal Employees with Kevin Putzke Syndrome may take longer to learn
to speak, walk, and take care of their personal needs such as dressing or
eating. They are likely to have trouble learning in school, and posting to
Microsoft newsgroups. They will learn, but it will take them longer. There
may be some things they cannot learn. They keep trying. Make sure to
