- Windows Vista >> Audio captures getting corrupted - How can I debug or fix?I'm trying to do a project which involves making long audio recordings
for later analysis. I'd been hoping to record these on my PC digitally,
so that they can be easily processed in software. However, the
recordings keep getting corrupted (I get extremely loud crackles and
pops occasionally - once or twice an hour, sometimes less frequently).
The glitches occur in all recording software that I've tried (e.g.
audacity) and also in some in-house written software (in both WDM and
DirectX versions). A debug version of the in-house software reports no
abnormal behaviour, lag or errors at the time of the corruption.
The corruption has a fairly characteristic waveform - it looks as though
a few hundred samples have simply been discarded, or sometimes, as if a
block of samples have been recorded at the wrong point in the buffer.
(Unfortunately, this is a limitation of my debug method, as I'm
recording a test tone to identify the corruption automatically).
The problem occurs identically with both on-board HD audio and a PCI
creative X-Fi, and occurs at all sample rates and bit-depths.
The problem cannot be reproduced at will - i.e. it cannot be reproduced
by deliberate high CPU load, high disk load, or high graphics load.
System specifications:
CPU: C2D E6600 (not overclocked)
Mobo: Asus P5B-Deluxe (tried multiple BIOS revisions)
RAM: 2 GB PC 6400 (thoroughly tested with Memtest86+ and Windows memory
diagnostic)
Graphics: Nvidia 8800 GTX 768 MB
Sound: On-board SoundMAX audio and Creative X-Fi Xtremegamer (multiple
driver versions, including beta)
OS: Vista Home premium 32 bit
I'm at a loss as to how to debug further, or how to fix this. Does
anyone have any bright ideas?
I've been thinking about rewriting the capture software to use Vista's
WASAPI audio system - but I'm not sure that will fix the problem (i.e.
the problem is more fundamental - e.g. it's a Vista audio mixer problem,
or it's a hardware bug) and don't want to invest a non-trivial amount of
time in a non-solution.

- Windows Vista >> Vista Service Pack 1 Availability for MSDN subscribersI am so totally confused. I keep reading everywhere that SP1 is
available to MSDN subscribers, of which I am one. Yet, I can't seem
to find it in my download area on MSDN.
Where is it in the subscribers download area? I have a Visual Studio
Team System Development Edition membership. I take it SP1 just isn't
available at my level?
Thanks.

- Windows Vista >> Newbee question - adviseNot that I'm adverse to change, but I'm thinking of buying a new
laptop with Vista 64, after using XP Pro. I'm thinking of giving my
current laptop to my girlfriend. We're both on my home network along
with two printers.
I'm very comfortable with XP, and truely scared about the change in
OS. I've reseached the group a bit, and it sounds like the biggest
issue might be with drivers.
I think most of my other software will work, with the exception of
older Macromedia progs.
What are my options?
- not do the deal
- see if I can order mt new laptop with XP
- grin and bear it
I'm kinda lost here. I'd love to get some advice, or maybe soothing
words about Vista 64.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Best regards,
Bob

Somehow my Digital Locker which came with Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 seems
to have been corrupt. Is there anyway to reinstall the Digital Locker without
reinstalling Vista? I know that there is an installer download at Windows

install it on Vista until I know that it's safe for Vista. Thanks for any

cause a poster to learn and develop more slowly than a typical poster.

I have been doing this since XP.
The problem that I am having with Vista is that it will not open up these

these .msg files.
I am receiving an "invalid switch" when double clicking on these .msg files.

Windows Vista >> Windows Media Center does not recognize my DVDs
When I insert a DVD into my CD drive (I have an Acer Notebook) my computer
makes a noise as if it's trying to read the DVD, but Windows Media Center
says "Insert a disc and try again".
It used to read DVDs fine up until a week ago. I'm not sure what could be
causing this.
Any ideas?

Umm, your DVD drive is unable to read DVDs... all DVDs or just 1 DVD? Try
CDs? Do they work?
install any new software on your system? If so you could try System Restore
and roll your system back a few days, see if that helps.
Talk to Acer about service. If it's less than a year old your hardware is
covered under warranty.
Places like Geek Squad will take a look for nothing, diagnostics are $59 and
software repair is $140

- Windows Vista >> AeroMy system meets the requirements for Aero, but when I try to update my

tried a Radeon 1650 w/512 MB of RAM on the card as well as a Radeon 9600xt
Pro with 256 MB of RAM on the card. The rest of the system is as follows:
AMD XP 2600 Barton edition, Abit NF7-S v.2 motherboard, 1.5 GB of Kingston
PC3200 RAM, WD 80 GB SATA 300 hard drive. Under the Performance Information
Tool it says that new hardware has been added and has an option to rescan. I
rescan and the score never changes, and the alert informing me that new
hardware has been added stays there. I have deleted the WinSat scores and
scanned again with no success, the same applies. Thanks for any help!

- Windows Vista >> Losing wireless connectivityHi,
I am currently rolling out vista to about 100 different sites.
Each site functions separately and have their own forest and domain.
At each site there is wireless connectivity with authentication via
802.1X. Radius is provided via Windows Server 2003 and IAS.
Authentication is via the computer account only. The clients are a
mixture of laptops and desktops.
All clients retrieve the wireless setting via a wireless group policy.
The clients are first built on a wired network and then, after the
policy has been updated, moved to the location where they will be used
on a wireless connection.
We are getting a problem where some wireless clients disconnect from the
network and are unable to reconnect unless a GPUPDATE is run on them
when connected via a wired network. So far, i have only confirmed that
the issue occurs on desktops. I have not come across any instance where
it has happened on laptops.
Has anyone experienced this before?
Any help tracking down what the issue may be will be greatly appreciated.

- Windows Vista >> Vista-Ultimate, Offline files not working (NAS)I have a notebook with Vista-Ultimate on it.
I have a Intel SS4000-E NAS unit in my network on wich all of my data
resides.I have marked several files/folders for 'allways available offline'
but when I'm offline I can't open the files (Error: 0x800710FE: This file is
currently not available for use on this computer). Syncing also gives an
error for each and every file in the Sync-Center 'The process cannot access
the file because it is being used by another process' while I'm the only
user on the system at this time and it's NOT in use.
I've read that offline files may not work correctly with NAS units, I've
also seen some postings about making changes to the 'samba' software ?? But
I don't know how to do that or if the SS4000 even uses Samba...
I'm not sure how to proceed, but I really, really, really need my offline
files
Can someone please help me ?
TIA,
Jurjen.

- Windows Vista >> Help - Windows Title Bar Text is Smeared / DistortedCan anyone help me fix this issue?
The text in title bar on open windows is "smeared" or distorted. It seems
to be associated with movement mouse. The best way that I can explain it is
that the text seems to fold and the stretch down the screen. When I move the
mouse it will seem to smear more or less in coordination with mouse movement.
It seems to be only aesthetic and doesn't affect the performance. This has
been happening for months and is quite annoying.
Here's a link to a typical screenshot.
http://s141.photobucket.com/albums/r80/EricHale/?action=view¤t=WindowsTitleBarSmeared.jpg
I am running Vista 32 (not SP1 yet). AMD 4400+ Dual Core CPU. 2 GB RAM
Nvidia 7900GS video card. All the latest updates/drivers are installed.
I am hoping this is just a simple setting for my video card. However, I
have tried a few of the obvious things (resolution, refresh rate, etc.) and
nothing seems to help.
Help!
