Windows Vista >> Recovering files Well, when I just turned on the computer the message "Configuring updates"
and "Please wait" appeared. Afterwards, when it was completed, all the
programs previously open (I kept my session in memory) were closed! When I
opened IE, all the tabs were there, but other files I were working on were
gone. Anyway to get them back?

Windows Vista >> Recovering files Are you saying you did not save the files?

Windows Vista >> Recovering files Yup, I was working on some files and didn't save them.
By keeping my session in memory, I meant turning off the computer without
properly shutting it down.
The shut down symbol says "Keeps your session in memory and puts the
computer in a low-power state so that you can quickly resume working." The
symbol had an update sign at the time, and after the update today morning my
programs were closed.

You hibernated your machine. Unfortunately, because you didn't follow good
computing practice by saving early and often, your files are lost. Since
they were never saved, they don't exist.

If you were using an MS Office program, set its options to allow background
saves, etc. to help in case you forget to save in the future. But the main
thing is to change your habits and save your files frequently. Don't forget
to back up to external/removable media regularly also.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Windows Vista >> Recovering files But other times when I hibernated the PC, the programs showed up again. So
could this be due to the update?

Probably. When you apply updates to an operating system and/or programs, it
is important not to have anything running. The system probably closed any
programs that were open, as it should.

Again, the reason you lost the data is not because of the updates per se but
because you didn't save while you were working. Not saving is a bad habit
you can change.
