Re:win 98 question - thought someome here would know

ok now that I've dusted off my dos user manual you have to type dir/p/w

that will let you see what is on the rout dir of the cd.

you have to type setup.exe

ps you can get all the dos commands by typing help ;)

Watch the screen carefully to see which drive is assigned to the cdrom.

drive D: is usually a RAM drive

If (for example) drive E: is assigned to the cdrom...

at the C: prompt simply type and enter E:

now just type and enter setup

and the installation should begin

NOTE: There still are a number of win98 groups so you may want to post

thetre if you have add;l questions

Sounds like you didn't change the BIOS to BOOT from the CD. Try this:

a. Go to your BIOS and change so the CD drive is the FIRST boot

device.

b. Shut Down system.

c. Place the Windows 98 CD in the CD drive, close door.

d. Restart. If things go correctly you should be on your way.

If all else fails and assuming your still running some version of

Winnows on this box try copying the entire contents of the Windows 98

CD to a new folder on the root drive. Once done, go to this folder and

there should be some obvious file setup.exe or something, so long I

forget and click on that and that may do it.

Once working ok with the new OS installed go back to BIOS and change

back to boot from the hard drive or the system will waste time trying

to start from the CD drive.

Re:win 98 question - thought someome here would know

If he is booting from a floppy that is true, else he needs to be at the

command prompt of the drive that is the CD ROM drive. Typically, the CD is

drive D or E.

Boot from the Win 98 startup diskette.

Make a note of the CD drive letter allocation..

When you get to the A prompt, type the allocated letter of the CD drive,

followed by a colon..

Press <ENTER>

Now type <dir>

You should see the list of files contained on the Win 98 CD..

Type SETUP, then press <ENTER>

Good call, I assumed he was booting from the CD, but on second thought it

occurs to me that 98 will not boot from a CD.

If this is true, then he has to enter <drive>:\setup from the boot location

command prompt.

Win98 CDs were not bootable. You needed the boot floppy with your CDROM

drivers on it.

Re:win 98 question - thought someome here would know

Kevin,

Sounds like you are correctly at the CD-ROM drive letter, but it all depends

on what CD you have as to where the Setup.exe file is located.

If it's a Retail CD then Setup.exe is in the Root of the drive and that

should have worked, but obviously not per your answer.

Do you know what version CD you have?

On some of the MSDN CD's there were several versions of Windows and you

have to type the path to the folder where their located.

Example for Win98

Type: CD\Win98 Press Enter

Type: Setup Press Enter

Type: Setup Press Enter

Example for Win98-SE

Type: CD\Win98_SE Press Enter

Type: Setup Press Enter

Type: Setup Press Enter

Try booting again from your floppy disk and this time type the following

after you switch over to your CD-ROM drive letter.

dir /w /p Press Enter

Note the spaces between "dir" "/w" and "/p"

The "w" is the Wide switch

The "p" is the pause switch

If there's a lot on the screen just press Enter to move down.

This should show you what's on the disk and the path where the Setup.exe is

located.

Re:win 98 question - thought someome here would know

Hmm, well I've no idea why then. If you see the Setup.exe on the CD and you

are on the D: drive then there's no reason it should not start.

When you boot from the floppy it tells you what drive letter is assigned and

you are sure it's D: correct?

Now type the following and lets try once more to be sure you are doing this

correctly.

Type: D: and press Enter

Then type: Setup and press Enter

Hmm, well I've no idea why then. If you see the Setup.exe on the CD and

you are on the D: drive then there's no reason it should not start.

When you boot from the floppy it tells you what drive letter is assigned

and you are sure it's D: correct?

Now type the following and lets try once more to be sure you are doing

this correctly.

Type: D: and press Enter

Then type: Setup and press Enter

If he booting from the 98 floppy, then he needs to be at the "a" prompt

and type in the command...setup.exe.

Are you booting from the 98 floppy? If so then you must be at the "a"

prompt then type in the command setup.exe

Did you change you BIOS to BOOT from D?

That should be all that's necessary, then turn the computer on again

with the CD in the drive and Windows should boot from the D drive,

find setup.exe all by itself and start to install.

There seems to be a lot of back and worth, answer two questions:

1. Are you trying to boot from a floppy or a CD?

2. Have you changed the BIOS setting?

I have no idea why you're trying to install a 10 year old version of

Windows. You're just asking for all kinds of problems in doing so.

I suspect your real problem is either you didn't change BIOS or you

don't have a clue what I'm talking about. To get to BIOS you need to

press one of the Fkeys or Delete. What exactly depends on your

computer and which key or key combinations are detailed in the

computer manual or the motherboard manual if you build it from

scratch. You need to enter BIOS IMMEDIATELY once you computer starts

up and BEFORE it has a chance to start the current version of Windows.

If you wait too long you need to try again.
