- Windows Vista >> can't install windows xp on a drive that has vista on itI bought a hp pavillion that has vista home premium and I'm trying to
install XP on a separate partition. However, I cannot get the XP
installation cd to load: if I boot from it, windows loading crashes,
and if I insert the cd from within vista, the 'install windows' option
is disabled.
There's a microsof kb article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931760
describing my exact problem. And it says that certain bios will cause
xp to not load on a disk partitioned by vista, since it's a different
partition than xp expects. I changed the registry entries as it
suggested, but no result. Also, I emailed them about the hotfix and
they said vista home premium has no hotfix for this.
My question is, how am I supposed to install XP on this machine,
either as a dual boot or to completely remove vista, if I can't even
get the XP install cd to load?

- Windows Vista >> Vista Synchronise Mouse Pointer with desktop hotspotsI recently bought a Dell Inspiron 530 running under Vista Home Premium. It
was supplied without a monitor. I have tried it with two monitors, a small
LG flat screen and a 20.5" widescreen Samsung. In both cases the mouse
pointer is about 2 mm (1/8th inch) out of true so that when for example
selecting files from a list in Windows Explorer it is easy to select the one
below that intended. How do I synchronies the mouse pointer with the
hotspots? An obvious answer is to contact Dell, but, if it comes to that, I
would like to have some understanding of the underlying problem before I
talk with them. And if there is some simple registry tweak in Vista, then
hopefully I can fix it with kind guidance from this newsgroup :)

- Windows Vista >> Startup Slow on acquiring networkI am using Vista Premium.
When the system starts it loads quickly, but seems to
slow down while waiting to acquire network information
from my Linksys router WRT54G. This may be as long as 1-
2 minutes.
The network card is an Nvidia nforce.
I am have a Cisco VPN loading, but not activated until I
need it.
The router acts as a DHCP server, I am not using fixed
address.
Is there a way to speed up this portion of startup?
Is there a boot log program for Vista that will give
times to view startup problems?

- Windows Vista >> "Access denied" for every connection attempt after some timeHello,
I installed Vista about a month ago, and since the beginning I have this
strange issue: after some hours (between 10 and 30 approx.) my computer
is not able to create any TCP connection for from 30 to 180 minutes.
I don't know the cause of this problem but here are the symptoms:
- if I try to open any TCP connection, for instance my browser to
www.google.fr, I get "access denied error"
- active connections still work, e.g. IRC or Webradios are still up and
running
- my computer is accessible, for example if from another computer on the
LAN I try to access the FTP server which is on my computer, there is
absolutely no problem.
To sum up, my computer cannot establish a remote TCP connexion.
I am using Windows Vista Professional, which I had with the MSDN
Academic Alliance between my school and Microsoft.
I hope you will be able to give me some leads, or better, a solution! :)

- Windows Vista >> Problems with Thumbnail ViewsHallo,
I am using Vista Ultimate 32bit and synchronize my personal data from
a Windows XP computer using offline files.
When I try to view thumbnails of JPGs, only portions of them are
displayed, whereas the rest is displayed as normal icons.
If I copy the folder to the desktop all thumbnails are displayed
correctly.
I already deleted the thumbnail cache using disk cleanup.

I have tried both from the Vista file window and start program 'deafault
program' settings window. The result is either...
1. Winword appears in the program selection window and once selected not in

- Windows Vista >> I can't install my printer software????I have an HP 6830 deskjet printer (which according to my mom is old, and I
guess she would know, seeing as it used to be hers....) and I tried to hook
it up to my new computer today, but when I try to run the CD with the
software, it says it can't install it because I don't have IE 5.0 or higher.
-.- I use 7.0.
I read somewhere that some printers need drivers to run on vista, so I went
to the HP website and found their universal driver (or whatever it's called),
and I looked, and it doesn't support my printer.
is the printer just too old to use on my computer, or is it not compatible
or something?

- Windows Vista >> low battery alarmHi
we just got a Toshiba laptop which does not sound an alarm when the battery
is low. It only notifies with a pop up. I need to use the alarm function and
it seems that this particular model does not have this function.
Can you guys point me to a freeware that does such a thing. I was looking at
scripting or coding (writing a program to do so and set it up as a service
or something like that). If it can be done, appreciate if you guys could
give me a few pointers.

- Windows Vista >> Internet Explorer freezesI am running a new Vista Home Premium laptop. I have selected Google.com as
my home page. Normally, when I open Internet Explorer, I can use Google to
highlight selected websites. But in the past two days I can open Google, but
when I spell the name of another site, and click to select, Google actually
freezes. Occasionally it will open a page of website links. But any one of
those links, if selected, will also freeze when I try to select it. I do not
think this is a problem with Google, which is operating normally on another
computer, nor with server problems: the other computer has no problems.
If anyone has any ideas as to how this problem can be resolved I would be
extremely grateful.

- Windows Vista >> User Account screensYesterday I shared my music folder with my girlfriend who has an account on
my computer. Ever since I have done that every time she has tried to log in
to her account it comes up as a black screen and will not show anything else.
The guest account on my computer still comes up but in a solid blue screen.
Neither one of the accounts has the start menu or nothing on the screen
except the solid color. My account seems to uninfected ny this any help
would be helpful.

- Windows Vista >> Partitioning & Data Recovery ProblemsI have enormous computer problems. It all started a few days ago. When I
initially installed Vista I did so on a 20GB partition of my 300 Gig hard
drive. The rest of the drive was an extended partition with four logical
drives. Over time Vista grew and eventually the partition became too small
to house Vista. I used a partition manager tool to resize the partitions and
give Vista a 100GB partition. The problem is that when I did so the largest
partition on my Hard Drive, containing VITAL data, was ruined.
Before I did the repartitioning, I backed up the entire contents of my
computer onto a separate using the Vista Computer Backup utility. How that I
have the Hard drive partitioned correctly, I don't want to have Vista Backup
reformat and repartition the hard dive as it once was (with only 20 gig for
vista) and I know of no way to pick and choose data. Further, windows seems
to have saved it all into some sort of inaccessible archive. What should I
do? I need this data...
The only option I can think off is to buy a new hard drive - blank - and swap
them out. Recover onto the new hard drive, the work with the data and the
old hard drive to restructure the system.
How good is VISTA at recognizing and changing partitions in the Full Computer
Restore mode?

I suspect that the official SP1 will be out shortly. I have the
beta sp-1 on my machine and have been quite happy with it. However, I
will want to completely remove it and install the final sp-1 "clean", so
to speak. My computer says it is running sp-1 v.744. How do I remove
it? I remember have some other service packs install with it and making
some registry changes so update would see the beta service pack. So,
what do I uninstall and what changes do I need to make so Vista will be
ready ton install the final SP-1?

Remove it by going to Control Panel/Programs & Features/Installed Updates
and uninstall "Service Pack for Microsoft Windows KB936330"
I have found that it's best to disable any software protection -
anti-virus/firewall etc during the process. You can enable Windows Firewall
in the meanwhile.
However, it appears that the rtm is not yet available from that link.

It should be removable from "Program and Features" in
the Control Panel. Be sure to reboot one extra time after
uninstalling SP1 RC1 to remove the "Evaluation" mark on
your desktop. Sometimes it might take an extra one or two
reboots.

I have uninstalled the first SP1 in order to install the SP1 refresh. My
uninstall went without any problems. Just follow the instructions others
have posted for uninstalling.
I would recommend that you keep your current SP1 until the the RTM version
becomes available (so you don't lose any functionality).

- Windows Vista >> Moving from XP to Vista is like ... ?Let's leave the move from DOS to Windows out of the discussion -- that's
on a whole different level. Instead, really, what is it like to move
from XP to Vista?
It's not like moving from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95. That particular
move was a sea change -- a breakthrough the likes of which we really
haven't seen since.
It's more like moving from Windows 95 to Windows 98, isn't it? They
weren't the same operating systems, but they were similar, and while
there was a learning curve with Win98, it wasn't too steep and the pain
wasn't so great.
It certainly isn't like moving from Win98 to Windows ME. In fact, I
never made that transition successfully. I struggled and struggled with
WinME and finally gave up. Fortunately it wasn't too long after WinME
that Windows XP came along and I just skipped WinME.
Moving from WinXP to Vista certainly wasn't as traumatic for me as
moving from FAT32/Win98 to NTFS/WinXP. (Yep, I skipped Win2K too.) In
fact, I found moving to Vista from WinXP really wasn't traumatic at all
-- at least it wasn't after I'd turned off User Account Control.
So yeah, I guess I have concluded that the closest comparison to moving
from XP to Vista is moving from Windows 95 to Windows 98. They're
different certainly, but the similarities outweigh the differences.
I've been dual booting XP and Vista for six months or so now, and it's
only recently that I've found myself booting into Vista more often than
I boot into XP. It has taken a while, but I've finally found either
Vista-updated versions of the software I need, or acceptable
substitutions. I'm pretty much happy with Vista.
And what is it about Vista that I like better than XP? The truth? The
real, honest truth?
It's prettier. That's it. Seriously. OK, maybe with Vista it's a tiny
bit easier to navigate through Windows Explorer, but the differences
aren't worth all the effort it took to offer them. And aside from that
I have found nothing (so far) in Vista to recommend over XP.
But Aero sure is pretty. Dreamscene is too, but I've found Dreamscene
crashes some of my video applications, so I've turned it off. Still --
Aero -- nice. But worth the price? Um, well, no.
If I were buying a new computer today I'd get Vista. But I sure
wouldn't buy a new computer simply for the purpose of having Vista.
It's nowhere near the disaster some are claiming claim it is. But it's
also nowhere near being a must-have.
And now that I think a little more about it, I believe Win98 was a
bigger improvement over Win95 than Vista is over XP. Yep, I do believe
it was. Vista is nice, but it's not necessary.

- Windows Vista >> vista safe modeHi, i'm having a problem with my window's vista home premium.
a few days ago the computer froze and i had to turn it off without first
shutting it down as i was unable to do so, and as such i restarted in safe
mode.
the thing is, now my windows task bar is no longer the standard windows task
bar, instead it remains as the safe mode task bar as well as all the windows,
which also remain as standard safe mode windows.
i was wondering how to get rid of this and get it back to normal.

Every time I start or restart my computer, I have to reinstall certain
software or run certain programs to get things working properly. The
changes I have made do not stay in effect.
For example, every time I start or restart I have to re-install Flash Player
or it says it is not installed. Also I have used a program to "un-associate"
certain file types with one program and associate them with another, but
every time I start or restart the computer, they are "re-associated" with the
wrong programs so I have to re-run the "un-associate" program, then
re-install the program I want them to work with.
Why are the changes not kept when the computer shuts down? This does not
happen if the computer is hibernating or in sleep mode, only if it is
completely shut down as in a restart.
Does anyone know how to make the changes stay in effect? I am VERY
frustrated with having to reinstall this stuff everytime I need to restart
the computer.

- Windows Vista >> No MP3 Ripping Option in Windows Media Player---Why??I just noticed that there is no "mp3" option in the drop down ripping
menu in WMP11, which I am running in Vista. I could swear that it was
there before, and now I have to use iTunes to rip my CD's into mp3
files. Does anyone know what might have caused the option to disappear,
and how to restore that capability? I thought it was built in to WMP11.

- Windows Vista >> system properties doesn't show hardware configuration! HELP!I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit. I have a Dual-Core processor with
1.83GHz and 2GB of RAM. My system rating is 4.6. The only problem is, when I
go to my system properties in the control panel, it doesn't show any of this.
after "Rating:" it's just a blank space. "Processor: Not Available", "Memory
(RAM): Not Available). it shows me my system type but that's it. I know it
recognizes it because the welcome is able to show it (RAM and processor). Is
there a setting I changed somewhere that's causing this? How can I get it to
show these again? Will SP1 solve this problem? Please help

- Windows Vista >> The Good, The Bad, & The UglyBeing human (and I use the term loosely) we tend to embrace the familiar and
shun the unfamiliar. Part of adopting Vista involves giving Vista a chance to
become familiar. Over the last 10 months that I've used Vista I've learned a
lot and become more accustomed to Vista. Overall, I think Vista is becoming
an appealing and highly functional system. During this same time, MSFT and
the Communities and other forums have worked a lot of the bugs out of the
system, and many third-party compatibility issues have been resolved. Vista
and I could not have made this journey together without the help of the many
contributors to the Vista Communities and other forums. Which brings me to
the first of two major downsides that I see with Vista.
The first downside is not so much a Vista problem as it is a MSFT problem.
Ideally, MSFT would provide real Support for Vista for the predicted lifetime
of the product. In reality, this is not the case. MSFT technical support of
Vista is a virtual black hole that swallows up the universe (including your
money) and everything disappears without a trace. The Help & Support that
comes with Vista, or that available online, is superficial and rarely covers
any of the serious issues encountered. Searches of the Knowledge Base are
rarely fruitful. There may be some helpful information there (mainly for
XP), but finding what you need for Vista is next to impossible. Most
third-party software companies provide better support for their freeware.
MSFT could learn a lot from Google as far as searches, and from other
third-party companies as far as support.
After youâ??re done with the superficial Help & Support and online support,
MSFT passes the buck to the Vista Communities Discussion Groups and refuses
to take responsibility for their brainchild. And when thereâ??s a Windows
Update that screws up your computer and everyoneâ??s screaming in capital
letters for help, MSFT is mute. Of course, you can always pay the big bucks
and get help with a limited problem. However, after already paying the big
bucks to buy Vista, few of us are willing to shell out more for support that
should be there, at no cost, just because we bought the product.
The second downside has to do with Security. Vista has been designed to be
as tight as a drum and impermeable to all external threats. In the process
of doing this, Vista also has many layers of protection that prevent even
Administrators having access to do what needs to be done. MSFTâ??s response to
IT terrorism has been to improve Homeland Security at the expense of our
inborn Administrator liberties. Administrators should automatically have
Ownership and Full Control of everything, should automatically have â??elevated
privilegesâ??, and should never be denied access to anything. Iâ??m OK with
confirming â??Are You Sure You Want To Do This?â??, but anything further is just
plain harassment and obstruction.
In balance, I think Vista will continue to improve over time as weaknesses
in the system are ironed out. I think the security issues will become more
manageable over time. Vista will continue to be a commercial success as more
and more businesses adopt it with improvements in compatibility. Vista will
eventually leave its mark as a true step up in digital history. It may be
wishful thinking to hope that MSFT will step up to the plate, however, I
challenge MSFT to begin providing real, free technical support for Vista. I
do believe we are safer now, under Vista, than before, but I also challenge
MSFT to help keep us secure while restoring our Administrator freedoms.

- Windows Vista >> Problems opening a pdf file though internet explorerI'm not sure this is even a Vista question, but it wasn't an issue when I
didn't have it. When I try to open up a pdf file through the internet, it
takes forever and eventually an error message saying theres a problem with
Adobe comes up, but then the file opens (it just takes forever and is really
annoying). Once there is another pdf file up, this doesn't happen and any
pdf just opens right up. It also isnt a problem if I have a pdf file saved
on my hard drive and I open it from there. Anyone know what my problem is?

- Windows Vista >> Email link uses 64-bit IE7Hi guys, I've set my Start menu email link to use Windows Live email
instead of Outlook. Problem is, although IE7 32-bit is default on Vista
x64, the email link brings up the 64-bit version. As I always start
surfing the net by checking my email first (habit over yeeeears!) I
always find incompatible websites using Adobe Flash which I have to
reopen in 32-bit IE7. Is there any way to change the email link to use
32-bit IE7 by default?
