- Windows Vista >> Canot post to newsgroups Socket Error: 10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0FI have a problem posting from Windows Mail to newsgroups. I can post from a
xp machine on the same network using Outlook Express so one would thing it
has nothing to do with the firewall.
I seem to have problems posting to some servers all the time and other
servers some of the time. msnews.microsoft.com works some of the time and
other times it does not.
I connected my vista workstation directly to the ADSL router and was able to
post. This would make you think I had a firewall or network problem but as I
said above I can post from XP machines running Outlook Express

- Windows Vista >> Will my existing hardware run with VistaI am presently running Windows XP Home Edition. My PC is getting old and
need replacement soon. I will probably get the new Vista OS with the new PC.
I have heard I may have a problem with my present I/O devices (Printers,
Modems, DSL Gateway) when I switch to a PC with Vista. I know there is a
program called "Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor 1.0" that is available from
MS. Does this program look at the device configuration as well as the
software configuration to see what is compatible with Vista? Has any one
tried running this program? This is the URL to get to the MS download:

Any information you can give me would be appreciated. Charles Ranheim

somewhere else. This is getting frustrating. Any help will be greatly
appreciated. Thank you.

- Windows Vista >> Can not diskplay Wallpaper in Windows Vista Home PremiumI tried to change the Desktop Background (Wallpaper) in Windows Vista Home
Premium, through the Control Panel->Appearance and Personalization->Desktop
Backgroups. I tried a number of times but all I can get in the backgroupnd is
a solid color.
I am using an HP v17 LCD Monitor with an NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS Graphics
card.
My system is a 32-bit x86 based Hewlett Packard with 2 GB of RAM and 512 MB
on the graphics card.
It is odd that no Background Pictures are ever displayed when chosen from
the Control Panel.
What could be the reason for this?

- Windows Vista >> Control Panel Stopped WorkingLike the title says, I know I'm not the only one to whom it happened.
Is there anyway to solve it? At first a reboot cured it, but now it seems
the problem is permanent.
Is there at least a way to access the Indexing Options Control Panel without
opening Control Panel?

- Windows Vista >> DVD Maker Shuts DownHi,
I'm reposting this information with the hope that someone will be able to
assist me. This is just so frustrating! Thanks for any help!
Each time I've tried to burn a recorded TV program from Windows Media
Center (or any other video for that matter), using DVD Maker, the program
shuts down. I've copied the error message information I receive after the
program stops working. There is mention of a problem with "atimcenc.dll".
I've been unable to find such a file on my computer. I've never yet been
successful using this program.

- Windows Vista >> Dial-up baud rate display. In previous versions of Windows, the dial up baud rate was displayed by
rolling the pointer over the connection screens in the tray. With Vista, the
only way I can see the baud rate is to right click on the screens and then
open the "Network and Sharing center".
This is very laborious and cumbersome compared to the previous method. Is
there an easier way to monitor the dial-up baud rate?

- Windows Vista >> How to disable ".exe has stopped working" dialog.I am running a long set of unattended software tests (native code) on
Window Vista. Because I am testing software has frequent changes,
several of the tests may contain error and may crash. On my Vista
machine, then a test crashes I get the following dialog from Vista:
<program-name>.exe has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Please close the program.
with a single button to "Close the program".
I need a way to disable that dialog. So far I have done the
following:
1) Start->Programs->Maintanance->Porblem Reports & Solutions->Change
Settings->Advanced Settings, shutoff ALL Windows Error Reporting.
2) Disabled all JIT debugging in Visual Studio 2005.
3) Removed registry key HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current
Version\AeDebug
4) Set registry key HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows
\ErrorMode = 2.
Does anyone know how to disable the dialog.

- Windows Vista >> Excel 2007 Problem with 2008 CalendarWhen using the fill button for dates in Excel 2007 I encountered this problem:
2/11... 2/18... 2/25... 3/4 (should have been 3/3 as Monday in 2008 is
March 3 not March 4).
When looking at Microsoft Calendar templates in Excel for 2008 the dates for
MArch look correct.
Is there a leap year problem in Excel 2007?

Try disabling the Phishing Filter from the Tools menu, then try loading the

- Windows Vista >> Vista on drive D in dual boot: how to clone it to drive C ?Hello,
I have a dual boot system:
XP PRO on drive C and Vista Home Premium on drive B.
I want to replace my hardrive, and move (or clone) Vista to new drive and be
it C drive.
Vista is still virgin and not other programs are installed, so changing it
location from D to C drive will not influance any applications.
I know how to create hard drive image. My question is how to make that new c
drive with Vista on it bootable again.
Is there any utility I can use?

- Windows Vista >> What does the "Adaptive Display" power option actually do?I have found lots of references to the fact that "Adaptive display" lets
windows dynically adjust the timeout to turn off the display if a user
quickly touches a key or button to get the screen back on just after
timeout. However, that is all quite vague. I have seen others post related
questions on various web sites and never get an answer. Can anyone explain
for all of us:
1. Are these changes permanent or just for the current session?
2. Do the changes show up under "Turn off display after" power saving
setting?
3. If the changes do not show up under "Turn off display after," how do I
know what they are? Where are they available?
Overall, I like Vista and the additional config options, and even the
dynamic changes it will make for me, but I find it extremely frustrating
when there's no way to find anything that explains how it makes those
decisions or what it changes.
Thanks very much for any added insight,
Colin

- Windows Vista >> Quick Launch toolbar won't show popup windowMy Vista Quick Launch Toolbar just stopped working the way it shuld.
Several of my icons are showing in the toolbar, but when I click on the
'double arrows' the background turns dark. and it will NOT show the rest of
my Quick launch Icons.
The only way it will open the window with the rest of the icons in it is if
I have expanded the Quick Launch Toolbar to show the maximum of 9 icons on
the toolbar. Then if I click on the 'double arrow' it will display the rest
of the Quick launch Icons.
This is NOT how it has been working. Can anyone tell me how to get it to
display the popup window with only 2 or 3 icons showing in the toolbar?

- Windows Vista >> links buttonmy friend's email is thru gmail. she has a links button (looks like chain
links) that she uses to provide links to websites *without* showing the
website address. it simply highlights a word she has typed and the mail
recipient clicks on that word to go to the website. i think several words (a
phrase) can be highlighted as well as just one word. so she might say,
'click here for more info' and the word *here* will be highlighted and
contains the link. does windows vista mail have this feature? i cannot find
it.
thanks!

- Windows Vista >> vista: too bad to put into wordslol vista window defender doesnt trust Net framework 1.1 (a Microsoft
program!), and blocks part of it,
And by the way.. you have to install the net framework service pack 1 after
you install the net framework
as SEPERATE DOWNLOADS>. LOL MS is crazy!
so you have 2 stupid big downloads..
why dont they friking make ONE updated download?
this is microsoft logic...
see here this fellow had the same reaction.. OH boy, VISTA IS CRAP!!!!
http://thebestnothing.blogspot.com/2007/12/pissoff.html
PS dont reply by saying you dont need framework 1.1 on vista because then
you re a computer illiterate!

- Windows Vista >> Vista Locks Up or Spontaneously RebootsMy Windows Vista Ultimate system either locks up (no response to keyboard or
mouse) or currently simply spontaneously reboots every time I go into SQL
Server 2005 Management Studio, select a log file, and just scroll throught
the log entries. That is literally all I have to do to kill the system???
I've installed the updates described in KB38194 and KB938979 and have loaded
the latest updated drivers for my video card.
Frankly, this operating system has *never* been particularly stable, but
just scrolling the log file blows it every time!
Does anyone have a clue as to how I should proceed?
I never had any of these problem with W2K.
Thanks

- Windows Vista >> Windows Help and SupportI am wanting help with Help. I am using Vista on a Toshiba laptop.
On many pages in Help, it is not displaying the pages properly. For example,
I have open the page called Troubleshoot problems finding wireless networks.
This is not hard to find. On this page there are a whole swag of links with
what should be icons on the left. In their stead are boxes with a red cross
(X) and Show Content. Is there a way to make these pages display correctly?
Or can Windows Help be reinstalled?
Thanks.

- Windows Vista >> How do I hide my Swap Drives?I have partitioned my hard drive to be multi-boot and I have made a swap
drive for Vista and a swap drive for XP on an extended partition.
- How do I hide them so that I don't see them when I viewing drives in
Computer (formally My Computer)?
-- How do I unhide them if I need to see them someday?
And also I might want to do this to the XP OS partition that I have also set
up so that I also don't see that when I view the drives in Computer.

- Windows Vista >> Saving data on drive D:My new laptop came with a partitioned hard drive (75Gb on each of two
drives).
Drive D is for data but the default locations for my Music, Pictures,
Documents, etc. is drive C.
How do I change this in Vista? I want my programs on C (where they
are) and my Music, Pictures, Documents and Videos on drive D - and I
want Vista to know this without me having to change folder every time.
Thanks in advance.

the iPod nano/touch and to your PC.
With the free iPod Music Transfer, you can easily copy back your songs,

library or your iPod for repair or system crashed.
I have never tested it, but for those who want to try, here it is:
