- Windows Vista >> Install Shield - Installation of Peachtree 2008 UpdateHi,
I am hoping someone here might be able to help me with an issue relating to
the installation of an update to Peachtree Complete Accounting 2008.
I currently have Peachtree installed on my Vista system.
Sage has an update available which is supposed to stop the program from
shutting down after a backup. The update is SR3.
I have downloaded the update from their website. I shut down Peachtree and
then execute the update file. The file processes, although at the end of its
routine, it just shuts down without any information.
The update is supposed to process when Peachtree is started. When I start
Peachtree, the company data loads as normal. After about 30 seconds an
Install Shield Setup window opens. For about 30 more seconds, the message at
the top of the window says that the Install Shield is not responding, with
the status % at 0. Then the progress graphic jumps to 99% and remains there
for about 2-1/2 minutes, and then it disappears. No messages appear after it
goes away. If I then click the about button on Peachtree, I see that the
update was not applied.
I suspect that there is a problem with the Install Shield, but, I don't know
where to start looking.
I am really not a fan of Sage Software (an understatement). Their support is
non-existent, unless you want to pay them a large fee. And, their software is
pretty unfriendly to other applications. (For example, to run the update
downloader from within Peachtree, you must first turn off UAC in Vista.) I
have posted messages on a forum dedicated to Peachtree; however, I have not
received any help.
I would appreciate any help that can be offered regarding Install Shield,
and what might be causing it to hang up. Just having some idea of how to
troubleshoot it would be helpful.
Thanks
Jeff

- Windows Vista >> Vista = big fat bust in the home market.Shall we say that the truth is finally shining?
Shall we say "I was telling you so"?
Shall we say that I was explaining to the fanboys that everyones Vista out
and XP in?
http://crn.com/digital-home/201805832?cid=microsoftFeed
By Steven Burke, CMP Channel
12:00 AM EDT Mon. Sep. 17, 2007
From the September 17, 2007 issue of CRN
Digital home integrators say Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system has
been a big fat bust in the home market.
That bleak Vista view, however, has translated into healthy profits for home
integrators ripping Vista off systems and replacing the much-ballyhooed
operating system with Windows XP.
Microsoft, for its part, claims demand is strong for Vista and its momentum
is unprecedented. But digital home integrators at the D&H Distributing New
England Technology Show last month in Quincy, Mass., say they are seeing a
healthy rip-and-replace business that is winning them over new customers who
bought systems at retail.
Bunker Herbest, co-owner of Computer Essentials, a Bangor, Maine, system
builder, said out of the 40 systems a month that Computer Essentials is
building, only about five are Vista-based systems.
Herbest said his shop was ripping and replacing Vista with XP on as many as
12 systems a month. Computer Essentials, in fact, has been advertising its
ability to offer Windows XP rather than Vista.
The Vista rip-and-replace service has "definitely been good for business,"
Herbest said. "What's great is Vista is being pushed everywhere. Customers
can't find anybody to get rid of it so they come see people like us. We're
getting a couple of customers a day at least."
Herbest said consumers have been frustrated by the new Vista graphical user
interface and the pop-up security update requests. "People that used XP
can't find anything," he said. "It takes time to ramp up and learn Vista."
Douglas Lee, CFO and director of business development at BostonTech
Partners, a Canton, Mass., solution provider, said his shop is building
about 50 systems a month and every one of them is going out with Windows XP.
The only Vista-related business BostonTech is doing is ripping it off laptop
systems, Lee said. A lot of time and energy is being spent trying to replace
Vista, he said. "Microsoft should have provided the option of having XP on
laptops as opposed to Vista," he said. "There should have been an easier
downgrade method. Microsoft is force-feeding the consumer market like they
usually do. It's their way or the highway."
Lee said one problem with Vista is the 64-bit platform that the operating
system can power is not necessary for many customers.
Paul LaRochelle, president of PC Authority, a Manchester, N.H., solution
provider, said 99.9 percent of the systems from PC Authority are shipping
with Windows XP rather than Vista. Since the introduction of Vista, he said,
PC Authority has sold only a dozen copies of the operating system. "Just
because there is a new car or a bigger hard drive doesn't mean you have to
go buy it," he said.
Greg Abrams, vice president and director of technology at PC-Plus
Technologies, an Auburn, Mass., solution provider, said his business is
seeing Vista adoption from several major clients. He said about 40 percent
of the systems being shipped from PC-Plus are Vista-based, with 60 percent
XP-based. Furthermore, he said PC-Plus has been working with clients to rip
Vista off some notebook systems that lack XP drivers. As a result, he said,
PC-Plus is installing Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 for a number of clients.
Abrams praised Virtual PC 2007, which is free, for solving major application
compatibility issues so customers can run applications like Adobe Acrobat
6.0. "This is more of a [workaround] solution for our customers than a
profit-driver," he said. "It took a lot of time to figure it out and learn
how to deploy it correctly."
LaRochelle said he feels it is better to wait for the first Windows Service
Pack to come out before pushing the operating system. Microsoft has said it
plans to launch the first service pack for Windows Vista during the first
quarter of 2008.

- Windows Vista >> PARENTAL CONTROLS GONE BADI got a laptop for my daughter and set up parental controls for her, which
required me to add an me as and additional user with an administrator
account, which I did. Now both my and her accounts show as standard users
with no administrator, which won't allow her to perform any downloads, system
changes or ANYTHING! When it ask's for permission from the admin, there is
no option to allow any action.
Am I missing something here, or is Vista as bad as what I've been reading.
I'm tempted just to reload the OP and software and start over since the
computer is only 2 weeks old.
Thanks in advance

- Windows Vista >> Capturing chkdsk resultsI know that if you run chkdsk on a non operating system drive, it will
run within windows and you can see the results in the event log. But
when you run chkdsk on the OS drive, you have to do it with a restart

chkdsk results on the OS drive?

- Windows Vista >> Missing(?) files in VistaHi,
I am having a little problem in Vista. Have a VB6 program that does some
voice to text and text to voice conversion on my older PC running under
Windows XP. It works fine in XP but not in my new Vista PC. Two smallish
files Xlisten.dll and Xvoice.dll are missing in Vista.
My questions are: Can I just copy the 2 missing *.dll files to Vista Windows
directory, and register them mannually? Or are these *.dll files are just a
bridge to something bigger that may also be absent in Vista?
Thanks

- Windows Vista >> upgrades when offlineI have Vista running on a laptop that is very rarely connected to the net. I
have noticed that even when it is not connected it will 'install upgrades',
last night spending a good 15 minutes doing so before I was allowed to shut
down.
If these upgrades were downloaded at a previous online session, why does it
wait for an offline session to install them?

Windows Vista >> How to Access Users Start Menu
I just started with a new Vista Laptop and need some help setting up
some account info.
Using WinXP I simply accessed the other users Start Menu (Programs) and
edited what shortcuts would appear for each user. This was a simply way
to control the Start menu by keeping the "heavy" stuff out of view for
inexperienced users.
Can't seem to do this using Vista - the Documents and Setting folder is
not accessible even to administrator accounts and even the users own
account.
How do I edit the Start/programs menu for a user under Vista?
Thanks, in advance, Fred

It's not accessible because it doesn't exist, user account folders are in
the C:\Users directory in Vista.

Hi Fred,
The location for the Start menu for each user is located at:
"C:\Users\(account username)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start
Menu\Programs"
You can see more details on how to do this here:

- Windows Vista >> Offline Files "Change Limits" button not working. Cannot change Offline Files SettingsMy Offline Files has been doing some strange things lately. Not only does my
computer lock up to 100% CPU usage every 2 minutes for 1 minute at a time
due to the CSCService (Offline Files), but the "Change Limits" button under
the Disk Usage tab in the Offline Files control panel does not not work.
When I click on "Change Limits", nothing happens.
If I click on the "Delete Temporary Files..." button, a status bar appears
and stays on screen. I clicked this button and left the house for more than
5 hours and came back and it was still on the progress indicator.
In the control panel, it shows 99 GB in use and 99 GB available (???) in the
overview. I have 250GB HD so not sure why it's showing I have 99GB
available. And under Temporary offline files, it shows 99 GB in use and 99
GB available. It's like my offline files has become corrupt somehow.
This is the 2nd time I've had to re-install Vista due to problems like this.
I really need to keep offline files enabled, but it just doesn't seem to
work and/or causes my computer to crap out.
Does anyone know how to repair/reset the Offline Files so I can change the
limits in the Control Panel again???

I have recently set up my computer to be able to dual-boot either XP or
Vista. This machine, a Gateway DX420X dual core, came with XP Professional
installed and a
coupon for upgrading to Vista Business when it became available. I didn't
load my Vista upgrade until recently when I decided to set up a dual-boot
configuration. The setup went well and after re-partitioning my hard drive,
I loaded Vista. When booting up, I get the screen asking which system I want
to use...XP or Vista. If I select Vista, everything works as it should.
However, if I select XP, a screen comes up telling me that "Windows failed to
start. To fix the problem: 1. Insert your windows installation disc and
restart your computer. 2. Choose your language settings and click 'Next'.
3. Click 'Repair your computer'. This is followed by; File: \rrtldr,
Status: 0xc000000f, Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the
application is missing or corrupt.
I have tried numerous times to restart the computer using the "Windows XP
Professional Operating System Disc" that was supplied with my machine in
order to follow the above instructions to fix the problem. No joy! The
system does not recognize the OS disc in the drive and instead boots normally
again asking me which system I want to use.
How do I reload XP so that it is error free and still retain the dual-boot
capability or am I committed to running only Vista?

- Windows Vista >> Connecting Desktop to LaptopI run Vista Ultimate on my d/top and WXP on my laptop and connect the two
for networking purposes with a simple crossover cable. On Network and
Sharing Centre in Vista I have configured the settings correctly, and on
this my network is identified as 'unidentified network' and shown as
'public'. I change this setting to 'private network' and all goes well. When
I reboot however the network does not work and I find in the Vista N&S
centre that the 'unidentified network' has reverted to 'public' and I have
to reset to private again.
Hope this can be understood- my question is -how do I keep this setting on
'private network'?

- Windows Vista >> Installing software, Company Name isn't my name?Greetings,
I have a Toshiba Qosmio running Vista with SP1.
When I install new software and fill out the registration info, the computer
knows my name, but not the name of my company. Instead it put in Toshiba.
Where do I change this? I have looked into the Registry but found nothing.

- Windows Vista >> HP Pavilion HDX Remote Not WorkingHi everyone,
I have an HP Pavilion HDX laptop running Vista 64-bit.
I've been trying to get the HP Remote Control
(http://www.shopping.hp.com/store/product/product_detail/EL623AA/1?jumpid=in_r329_personalization/browse2/SDP_PDP)
to operate Media Center with no success. HP Tech Support are of no help.
Here are the symptoms:
1) The remote does turn on the laptop and does bring up the Media Center if
I press the appropriate key when the laptop is OFF.
2) When the laptop is on, none of the keys on the remote work.
I checked all the obvious things about services, the event log, etc but I'm
unable to get this remote to work with Vista.
Does anyone have any thoughts?

- Windows Vista >> Upgrading from 2G to 4G on Vista HP = Crashed = HelpI did some interesting readings here before posting my question and learned
about issues and facts, something I use to do a while ago...! I wanted to
increase my actual memory of 2G to 4G running Vista HP 32 bits (aware of some
issues or limitations and why). I got the exact same Dimms Kingston KVR 2G
667 (DC Kit) and installed it. At first I crashed because I had forgotten to
reset virtual memory to auto mode (allow windows to decide). So, I removed
the extra 2Gb, corrected that issue, and all goes. However, I encountered
other problems; Trend Micro Internet security 2008 crashed while scanning, I
removed it, still now, Windows defender crashed, my backup sotware also
crashed, in others words the system became unstable or unreliable. I have
tried various things, still unstable and crashes. I removed the extra 2G of
memory, deleted and reinstalled Trend Micro, reconfigured my backup sotware,
etc..., and all is fine now. The memory Dimms were exactly the same (Asus
P5B-E, E6600 dual Core, 2G DDR2 DC 667MHz or PC-5300).
Any explanations as to why this is happening (I think it's because of lack
of sufficient adressing (mapping) available for some software, the space
being all taken if I may say so or any special parameters I'm not aware of or
simply normal (limitations)?

- Windows Vista >> Login Process Initialization Failure Error Message - HELP!Greetings all,
A friend of mine called me tonight saying he can't get Windows Vista
Home Premium to start on his laptop. All he gets is a black screen with
an error message -
"Interactive logon process initialization has failed. Please consult the
event log for more details."
He didn't receive a Vista DVD so he can't run a startup repair or
anything else - he can't even get into 'Safe Mode'
I suggested he find someone with a Vista DVD and try a startup repair,
or, worse comes to worse, take it back to the place where he bought it
(still under warranty)
Can any gurus out there help us get this guy back up and running again??
I did a google search of the error message - an exercise in futility!
Thanks in advance for any and all replies!
