- Windows Vista >> creating a new simple volumeMy laptop had an 80 gig hard drive. I imaged my drive and replaced the hard
drive in my laptop with a 250 drive.
After reimaging my drive i find that I have 160 gigs that have left
unallocated. The only option I have is to create a simple volume. Everytime I
try to create the volume I gett this error " there is not enough space
avvailable on the disk to complet this action".

I just want to perform a simple act of adding a delete icon ( the famouse
red X) on all my Windows Vista folder tool bars so I have access to delete
files directly from there. How the heck do you do this anymore? it was

I have been playing a MultiPlayer game for some time with no problems. The
last few days though I have experienced the system shutdown while playing. As
far as I know there have been no updates installed on my sytem and no changes
made.

- Windows Vista >> Sound but no picture?Ive just brought a laptop with Vista on.
When i brought it, it already had Windows Media Center and CyberLink
PowerDVD installed on it, and both were working fine. Over the past couple of
days ive installed Quicktime 7 and i also installed a codec pack because i
was having trouble playing videos that i had put onto my laptop from my phone.
I now cant watch a DVD in either program, im getting the sound but the
screen is blank ( black). Ive tried uninstalling Quicktime and ive also done
a system restore but nothing has worked.
Has anyone got any ideas why this is happening or what ive done?

- Windows Vista >> convert older binary *.reg to Vista *.reg?I'm trying to install a pre-Vista version of an app on this new Vista
machine. I keep getting re-asked for the serial. Here is why:
Upon first entering the serial, the app starts correctly and also writes
a binary *.reg file. All is well until I close the app. On restarting
the app, it wants the serial again. What it *should* have done is use
the *.reg to create registry entries, and then I wouldn't have to keep
re-registering. But Vista doesn't like that *.reg file. (I know, because
when I use regedit to try to import the *.reg, regedit will instead
tell me that it's not a valid *.reg file.) The wrinkle is that the app
accepts the registration as valid, deletes the *.reg file, but then
fails to make the corresponding registry entries.
So, does anybody know of a way to convert an older style binary reg file
to one (either script or binary) that Vista will understand? Thanks.
All works well on XP, no problem there.

- Windows Vista >> Is there really a Santa?IS THERE A SANTA?
Well, let's approach this scientifically.
1. No known species of reindeer can fly. But there ARE 300,000
species of living organisms yet to be classified, and while most of these
are insects and germs, this does not completely rule out flying reindeer.
2. There are 2 billion children (under 18) in the world. But since
Santa doesn't appear to handle Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist and Jewish children,
that reduces the workload to 15% of the total -- 378 million or so. At an
average rate of 3.5 children per household, that's 91.8 million homes. One
presumes there's at least one good child in each.
3. Santa has 31 hours of Christmas to work with, thanks to time
zones and the rotation of the earth, assuming he travels east to west. This
works out to 822.6 visits per second. This is to say that for each Christian
household with good children, Santa has 1/1000th of a second to park, hop
out of the sleigh, jump down the chimney, fill the stockings, distribute the
remaining gifts under the tree, eat the snacks, get back up the chimney, get
back in the sleigh, and move on to the next house. Assuming that each of
these 91.8 million homes are distributed evenly (which we know to be false
but for the sake of these calculations we will accept) we are now talking
about .78 miles per household, a total trip of 75 1/2 million miles, not
counting bathroom stops.
This means that Santa`s sleigh is traveling at 650 miles per second,
3000 times the speed of sound. For comparison, the fastest man made vehicle,
the Ulysses space probe moves at a pokey 27.4 MPS; the average reindeer runs
at 15 MPH.
4. The sleighs payload adds another interesting element. Assuming
that each child gets nothing more than a medium sized Lego set (2 pounds),
the sleigh is carrying 321,300 tons not counting Santa, who is invariably
described as overweight. On land, conventional reindeer can pull no more
than 300 pounds. Even granting that "flying reindeer" (see point one) could
pull TEN TIMES the usual amount, we can not do the job with 8 or even 9. We
would need 214,000 reindeer. This increases the weight, not even counting
the sleigh, to 353,430 tons. Again, for comparison this is 4 times the
weight of the Queen Elizabeth 2.
5. 353,000 tons traveling at 650 miles per second creates enormous
air resistance. This will heat the reindeer in the same manner as a
spacecraft re-entering the earth's atmosphere. The lead pair of reindeer
will absorb 14.3 QUINTILLION joules of energy. Per second. Each. In short,
they will burst into flame almost instantaneously, exposing the next pair of
reindeer, and creating deafening sonic booms in their wake. The entire team
will be vaporized within 4.26 thousands of a second. Santa, meanwhile, will
be subjected to centrifugal forces 17,500.06 times the force of gravity. A
300 pound Santa would be pinned to the back of his sleigh by 4,315,015
pounds of force.
6. Conclusion: There was a Santa, but he's dead now.

I'm not sure what he meant by "disappears very quickly" but mine stays up
there 45 seconds, possibly longer which seems like 5 minutes when you are
trying to see the things underneath it. Also, regarding "it does not
interfere with performance in any way", it does lengthen my startup time by a
minute since I can not do anything until I can see what's under this icon
which is very large (.75" x 2.5") and cannot be moved.
Did someone figure out how to use "some option to shorten the length of time
it is on the screen" or how "to see if the monitor has a setting that only
allows the VGA connection to be used so that it will not search connections
for a signal [whatever that means]"?
Also it seems like it comes up multiple times. "Dwarf" explained that was
because the screen resolution was being changed, somehow causing it to appear
again. He also said: "You may be able to turn it off through the menu
options on the monitor"
Did someone figure out how to do this?
I have a new 22" flatscreen Gateway monitor with a new Gateway desktop
computer and strangely I don't remember this appearing when I first got and
used my system. Perhaps I am noticing it more because I am using the Vista
"sleep" and "hibernate" options more when I leave the computer and this icon
appears when I restart again. It just seems to come up all the time and is
slowly driving me crazy!!!!
Did anyone find out how to get rid of it entirely, shorten its duration,
make it appear only once, not multiple times, move it, or in any other way
make it less annoying?

stop working correctly'
'Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available',
which of course it does not!
The same applies if I click Start / Help and Support - I am unable to access
any of the live
links under 'Ask Someone'.
I have posed this question in microsoft/public/windows/vista/mail but they
are unable to help.
I am trying to find a solution without having to pay Microsoft £40+.
Any light that can be thrown on this matter would be much appreciated.

remove Vista) and install Ubuntu after backing up any data you have.

I concur with Mark. Had a similar problem within last few weeks and followed
the steps in Mark's link. Ultimately, had to Reset Internet Explorer
settings (which the link will lead you to, if necessary). Since doing that
reset, have yet to have another IE non-response. Good luck.

1. You might have incompatible add-ons:

and click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).
2. Tools | Internet Options | Advanced
Scroll to the bottom and click Reset Internet Explorer Settings. Read this

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure

I burned them as mp3 (data disc) using Windows (not media player - altho i
expect there is a connection)
None of them work because Vista has included some picture files - and as a
result my DVD recognises it as a picture disc
How do I stop Vista adding picture files and just burn the mp3's I told it

- Windows Vista >> Sigma Tel Audio Driver update for sp1I called microsoft yesterday asking what will be done via this problem for
those who cannot get updated drivers for the Sigma Tel audio driver. The
problem is Sigma no longer makes audio drivers and passed it off to another
company who told me they are not making updated drivers at all for this type
of audio codec.
So how do you get updated drivers if you cannot? I have been on many forums
via Dell and Gateway and thousand of customers have the same problem.
First microsoft was giving advise to uninstall the driver and allow Vista to
find its own drivers for this.
Many did this and found they still had no sound.
Microsoft also said to uninstall drivers, put sp1 on and then reput back the
driver for sigman tel.
Many who did this found after the sp1 install, when trying to put back the
driver, Vista now came back with an error msg saying "This driver is not
compatable for Vista"
so they wound up again with no sound.
Well after talking to the tech and he confirmed that this is what was being
said- now when people call in they are telling them not do do anything and
wait because microsoft is working on a solution to this.
They say it will show up in Windows Update either a patch or fix for this
problem.
I received this morning an email from microsoft that I am passing in here,
some of the info like email or confirmation number has been taken out just
for security.

- Windows Vista >> Vista Service Pack 1 killed Office 2007 & it won't install or repaI have Vista Home Premium & Office 2007 installed. I have not been getting
updates for months due to a hanging install of a microsoft.net 1.1 update.
It offers the .net update daily & after dozens of unsuccessful tries it has
finally installed - thus allowing 6 months of windows & office updates to
install.
Next the .net update starts showing up again & freezing out other updates.
Finally it installs again, and vista sp1 appears & installs.
NOW office 07 won't work & says "outlook (or excel, word, etc) is not
installed for the current user. Please re-install. Well it won't reinstall or
repair. Repair doesn't show up as an option in control panel, and when you
try to install from disc it just crashes almost immediately.
Of course - now I am getting the same microsoft.net 1.1 update offer which
will not install & is giving me error code EO434F4D which can't be found in
the microsoft database.
Can anyone help me please?

when I go to Temporary Internet Files, it's converted to a DAT file. In WIN
XP, it's in WMV so I can copy it to another folder if I want to keep it. Why

Vista License on that machine. Interestingly, the "old"
machine no longer will finish booting it "hangs" shortly
after starting and a network connection never occurs. Is
there some "deactivation" scheme to prevent a user from
running more than one copy of the program?

I just installed vista ultimate with SP1, and I've encountered some strange
behavior. When I first log into an account everything works fine, but when I
switch to a second account, or even log off the first one and then open
another, vista makes some problems. For example, the welcome screen appears
empty, no program is shown on the taskbar, and not all the notification icons
show up. Further more, it seems that the CPU start working hard for no
apparent reason, and if I open My Computer, it seems empty.
Does anyone knows why it happens or how to solve it?

something is stopping my computer from rendering 3D. He said to reinstall
video and directx drivers. So I did and it didn't help. He then said that it
could be a hardware issue. I told him that before I upgraded everything ran
fine. I played games without any issues. I'm sure if I went back to XP right
now I'd would have no problems. Could it still be a hardware issue if 3D
works on one OS and not another?
Any help would be appreciated. I'll be more than willing to provide any
