My friend let me use his copy of Vista Ultimate and can't activate

Windows Vista6
hey i really really really need help...my friend let me use his copy of

windows vista Ultimate. It's the full version and not the upgrade because he

just built his computer so it didn't have a previous version of windows on

it. So i installed it on my laptop this morning and tried to activate it. It

denied my activation and i have like 2 days 3 days left (including today). If

i am unable to get it activated i'm pretty much dead cause this laptop is my

life. Am i going to ave to buy a product key from them cause i don't have

that kind of money and my friend that said it would be fine just can't afford

it right now. What are my options?

Yep, you have to purchase an additional license:

Instead of being a douche bag and trying to steal a copy of Vista, why not

go purchase a license? That way you can be legitimate? Just FYI.

If you are too cheap to do that, Just FYI, then you might as well go see

what Ubuntu has to offer. Ubuntu is FREE and has OpenSores software like

Office that you can also use for FREE.

well i don't wann be a douche bag and steal a copy of vista; considering my

friend did pay for it...which is why i am asking wut my options are. i was

reading somewhere that they have something called a MAK which is what he told

me he had. obviously he lied to me and now i'm S.O.L. So every single option

i can get would be greatly appreciated.

Two options I can think of:

1) buy a license from MS

2) install Linux for free

Either buy a legitimate license of your own, or remove Vista and

replace it with an OS for which you already own a license. What'd you

expect, a free ride? Get real!

Re:My friend let me use his copy of Vista Ultimate and can't activate

Your options are limited since you performed a clean install assuming

you deleted the partitions in the process.

Contact the computer manufacturer for replacement media, if available,

it will probably cost $10 - $25.

Install a different operating system you have available.

Purchase the operating system you want.

Get on of the many free versions of Linux.

After you are finished, thank your friend for the learning experience.

It's all I use on four home computers plus nine I admin at the local

library (they also have one xp and one vista). www.distrowatch.com is a

good place to start. Pick something near the top of the hit page rankings,

click and go to the info page for that distro - you'll find info on home

page, where to download, etc. Or you can go right to ubuntulinux.com and

order a free CD to be sent to you - it will take a few weeks, though.

Sunny D,

Re-read the reply from Jupiter and take his advice. It's unfortunate this

happen to you and appears you had no idea what you were getting into, but at

the same time you have learned a possible costly lesson. If you do have your

XP Pro disk then yes you will need to format the drive and start all over.

Re:My friend let me use his copy of Vista Ultimate and can't activate

sunny, actually you could not do a degrade of any version of windows! All

you could do is if you had UPGRADED from a lower version to a higher

version, you could then undo this upgrade and revert to the older one.

I suggest that you should back up your important files, and do a "clean

install" installing XP from scratch and then going to windows update and

install all the updates

here are some links that will help you

www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp" >www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp

www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html" >www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

XP is the best OS in my opinion.. many companies who depend on their

computers to produce are thinking of skipping vista altogether..

they will go from XP directly to the version after vista....

Good luck and if you need any help ill be around

sunny, actually you could not do a degrade of any version of windows! All

you could do is if you had UPGRADED from a lower version to a higher

version, you could then undo this upgrade and revert to the older one.

I suggest that you should back up your important files, and do a "clean

install" installing XP from scratch and then going to windows update and

install all the updates

here are some links that will help you

XP is the best OS in my opinion.. many companies who depend on their

computers to produce are thinking of skipping vista altogether..

they will go from XP directly to the version after vista....

Good luck and if you need any help ill be around

told

me to do a clean install. i can't go back to my orig. software because my

computer didn't come with back up dvdz. I'm not asking for a free one for

vista ultimate. second you don't need to be so rude. all i was see was my

options so i know wut routes i can take that's it. and so far two people

have

told me about linux. i would wrather stay with windows but considering i

can't afford it at the moment i'm see wut my other options are.

Call the computer manufacturer and order a replacement set of restore

CDs/DVDs.

Most companies charge like $20 for shipping and handling.

Re:My friend let me use his copy of Vista Ultimate and can't activate

Your options are to either A)buy a license for Vista; or B)re-install

whatever OS was on your laptop before your friend let you try to steal

Vista: or C)install some version of Linux......'A' would be the

simplest yet most expensive, 'B' would give you maximum compatibility

but with decreased simplicity, and 'C' would be the biggest pain in

the ass, but free. But whatever you do, don't be a douche bag!

is linux and where do i go to get it for free?

It's a little weird at first. If you're the type who likes to

download software and try it out, it's worth a go. If not, purchase a

license for Vista.

Happens I am downloading a Ubantu as I type this. :)

Well then I don't see as you have much choice. Get your pal to

download a Linux for you and burn it to a CD. You can always switch

to Windows later.

Also, you could probably by a copy of Windows 2000 in Ebay pretty

reasonably.
