Re:THANKS 4 ALL THE HELP,but now i have another question about securi

My policy is not to use any 3-rd party anti-malware except Spybot S&D.

Windows Vista offers sufficient protection against malicious software

writers some of them I am sure watch this forum very carefully.

Download Microsoft Windows Baseline Security Analyzer. It is Beta 2.1 for

Vista and I think it is safe to download. Run it.

<www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx>" >www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx>

It will give you all your vulnerabilities, especially in your firewall

settings. You should read the report and if it suggests any changes, you

should consider them.

Your Windows firewall setting will be analyzed.

Download Microsoft® Windows® Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830). It

will want to run upon install. Choose the FULL scan although it may give you

a threatening message that it might take a few hours. It will scan your

entire computer in about half an hour or less if you do not have a lot of

stuff in it.

<www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx>" >www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx>

Some reassuring information: Malicious Software Removal Tool

<www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx>" >www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx>

The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool helps remove specific,

prevalent malicious software from computers that are running Windows Vista,

Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, or Windows 2000

support.microsoft.com/ >support.microsoft.com/

You can also go to Protection Center (Microsoft)

<onecare.live.com/site/en-US/center/howsafe.htm>" >onecare.live.com/site/en-US/center/howsafe.htm>

and click "Protection Scan." There will be a dropdown menu and a button:

"Launch Full Scan or Vista." You can do it if you wish.

Download and install Spybot Search & Destroy, a great piece of software

which is free for individuals but corporations pay fees. You may be asked

for donations but it is up to you. It is very up to date and every week you

will have to download new updates, sometimes even more often. You should

check for updates every time you run it. It will give you all su*kers

leached into your registry and ask you if you wanted to remove them. Many of

them have masqueraded themselves under MS Windows names like

Windows.something. Do not hesitate to kill them all. You can trust SB S&D.

www.spybot.info/en/index.html" >www.spybot.info/en/index.html

www.spybot.info/en/spybotsd/index.html" >www.spybot.info/en/spybotsd/index.html

It also allows you to IMMUNIZE your system. It means that when you go to a

website and they try to download some kind of a Trojan to you SB S&D will

either kill it silently, or ask you if you want to do it or will kill it and

give you a notice. It is better to let it kill them all in silence.

Exerpts from SB S&D website

<quote starts>

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new

kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware

silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you

that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to

advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer

that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes

inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without

your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even

if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more

and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving

it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

To see a list of threats Spybot-S&D can remove, in the navigation bar at the

left click on Support -->Threats. For an introduction to Spybot-S&D, please

read the tutorial. If you fear incompatibility with other software you are

now using, although we can assure you that there is no danger you can review

our compatibility overview which lists some software whose compatibility has

been analyzed.

Spybot-S&D can also clean usage tracks, an interesting function if you share

your computer with other users and don't want them to see what you have been

working on. And for professional users, Spybot-S&D allows you to fix some

registry inconsistencies and extended reports. A list of all the

application's features is also available.

<End of quote>

After you installed SB S&D Windows IE will *****integrate***** it into its

Tools Menu. In the right upper corner of IE click Tools and you will see

Spybot Search And destroy configuration item. Click on it and it will give

you options to deal with the threats that are being downloaded.

Listen to Mark Russinovich's (MS) webcast: Advanced Malware Cleaning

<www.microsoft.com/emea/spotlight/sessionh.aspx>" >www.microsoft.com/emea/spotlight/sessionh.aspx>

Downloading any 3-rd party "free" anti-spyware program (with teh exception

SB S&D) is an invitation for a disaster.

The AV (antivirus industry) is on the way to the cemetery:

The slow death of AV technology:

www.theregister.co.uk/2007/06/08/death_of_av/" >www.theregister.co.uk/2007/06/08/death_of_av/

Vista did it in.

Last note: it has been suggested around here by some unscrupulous trolls

that the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) and SB S&D do not

clean the registry. MSRT and SB S&D work on different principles. MSRT in

full mode reads RAM memory and detects patterns in the files that match

known viruses and other malware configuraions. This is why it takes so long

to run. If malicious code is detected it is also quite likely that it has a

representation in the registry. The only way to remove a particular piece of

malware is to CLEAN the registry off of this key.

SB S&D works by going thru the registry and locating known names that match

its database of malicious software. After all culprits are found the user is

asked if he/she want to remove the malicious software. If you say OK, then

the registry IS CLEANED of this set of malicious execs. The execs themselves

are killed in the respective folders.

In this sense both tools do CLEAN the registry. They do not do any

"housekeeping" which is absolutely superfluous and unnecessary. It is NOT

recommended by MS and most of the experienced users as well.

*******************************

Additional security measure

To prevent unauthorized breaks into your computer, go to Computer

management, and disable Disable "Internet Guest Account." Make sure "Guest"

account is disabled. It should be disabled by default.

It really depends on what the Sympatico software is. A lot of ISPs provide

rebranded security suites made by McAfee, Trend, or Norton. I don't like

any of those. I'm also not crazy about AVG.

Check to make sure your computer is really clean:

www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html" >www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html

I hope you uninstalled AVG before installing the Sympatico software. If not,

uninstall it now.

For antivirus protection I recommend NOD32, Kaspersky, or Avast (free). For

most people the built-in Windows Firewall and Windows Defender is adequate.

The main factor in being safe is you.

Hi Tracy,

Your friend is right in advising you not to download this program. All

programs of this nature that purport to be able to clean your system will

actually do the opposite and will, infact, install malware on your computer.

The same thing applies to registry cleaners. Since you already have a

reputable product on your machine, ie AVG, there should be no need for you to

download this product. Just ensure that you keep AVG up to date. As for

'sympatico' security software, I have never heard of this. Stick with AVG and

use a reputable anti-spyware program such as 'Spybot Search & Destroy'.

They are not malware, ie. they will not infect your computer, but they can

certainly do a lot of harm in the hands of a user without a thorough

professional (in which case you will probably use regedit anyway).

I believe we are talking about Bell Sympatico's security solution, powered

as the one you have.

If you search this newsgroup for "best anti virus", "best anti spyware" and

Do not run multiple anti virus (or firewall) programs, they may conflict and

cause connection problems or crashes.

Uninstall one of them, preferably Sympatico's bundle-ware.

The vault will be deleted, which is not a problem. The viruses will not

reinfect the computer, and you do not need to keep them in your freezer.

As a Sympatico subscriber myself, I don't think that the Sympatico security

package is worth what they charge you. Cancel it.

Stay with AVG and the Vista firewall.

OK, now for other stuff.

Windows Defender you already have installed, and while it doesn't have the

best reputation, it will at least catch some stuff.

Adaware 2007, unless you pay for it, is a anti-spyware program that will

require you to manually update it and run it occasionally. It also sets up

in 'start-up' monitoring for whatever 'on the fly'

I haven't used Spybot in Vista because there was a time where the

immunizations conflicted with Windows Mail. I would imagine that the problem

has been fixed now. Spybot has a good reputation among XP users.

SpywareBlaster is a program where all you need to do is update it. There is

no 'running' involved. Essentially, it blocks access to whatever web sites

are contained in its database.

Hostsman is a small program which allows the user to manage the 'HOSTS' file

which does the same as SpywareBlaster. The difference is that you can manage

the list of blocked web sites yourself, adding to or removing at your

discretion. It can be set to automatically start when Windows starts and to

update automatically.

WinPatrol is a great little utility which gives lots of info regarding what

is running, what is in start-up etc. It also warns if a program or procedure

is trying to set itself up in start-up. Some malware will do this without

you knowing, but Scotty will bark and let you know.

All of the above are free. You can run all of them if you wish, but

performance could be take a hit with all of them appearing in startup.

I run AVG, Windows Defender, WinPatrol, Hostsman and the Vista firewall.

As a Sympatico subscriber myself, I don't think that the Sympatico

security package is worth what they charge you.

I would imagine that the

problem has been fixed now. Spybot has a good reputation among XP users.

SpywareBlaster is a program where all you need to do is update it. There

is no 'running' involved. Essentially, it blocks access to whatever web

sites are contained in its database.

Hostsman is a small program which allows the user to manage the 'HOSTS'

file which does the same as SpywareBlaster. The difference is that you can

manage the list of blocked web sites yourself, adding to or removing at

your discretion. It can be set to automatically start when Windows starts

and to update automatically.

WinPatrol is a great little utility which gives lots of info regarding

what is running, what is in start-up etc. It also warns if a program or

procedure is trying to set itself up in start-up. Some malware will do

this without you knowing, but Scotty will bark and let you know.

All of the above are free. You can run all of them if you wish, but

performance could be take a hit with all of them appearing in startup.

I run AVG, Windows Defender, WinPatrol, Hostsman and the Vista firewall.

It's no wonder Vista is so slow and needs so much horsepower, if it needs to

run all that bloatware to try and "defend" itself. Geez, are you Vista

users for real? Has Microsoft managed to dumb down the computing world this

much? I guess so. That's must be where the Most Valuable Player award comes

from.

Cheers.

Bullsh¡t. She sells her services as a computer repair person and spams

the newsgroups with her web site in her sig with every post.

From her web site:

"What We Do

Troubleshooting, virus/spyware removal, data recovery, repairs and

upgrades, networking, computer training, software/hardware installation,

and generally whatever else is needed to make you and your computer

happy. We don't have a retail store, so we can provide an objective

idea of what will work best for our clients. Basically, we provide

freelance technical support to home users and small businesses. Although

we can provide any necessary hardware for clients, we do not sell

hardware. Therefore, if we recommend that you buy a new hard drive or

even a new computer you can be assured we are not saying this just to

move inventory.

Rates

In-Shop Service

$40/hr., 1 hour minimum

Additional time after the first hour is charged in 30-minute increments

On-site Service

Within Fresno (Standard Service Area)

$60 for the first hour, 1 hour minimum

$40/hr. for additional time, charged in 30-minute increments

Outside Fresno (and outside Standard Service Area)

$60 travel time charge - if travel time exceeds 1 hour round-trip

it is billed at $60/hr., charged in 30-minute increments

$60/hr., 1 hour minimum - additional hours charged in 30-minute

increments

Our Standard Service Area is:

* From Marks to Cedar to the east

* From Marks to Hayes to the west

* From Bullard to the Fort Washington area to the north

* From Bullard to Belmont to the south

We do not normally bill and payment is required when the service is

rendered. We've tried to explain to the children about waiting 30 days

to eat, but they don't seem to understand.

For home users, you really should consider bringing the computer in,

especially if it is probable that your computer is infected by viruses

and/or spyware. Since Elephant Boy Computers was started many years

ago, removing viruses and other malware has gone from being relatively

quick and easy to a complex and time-consuming process. The number of

malware programs commonly known as "spyware" has exploded. These evil

programs can also be difficult to remove, and the necessary scanning

with antivirus and spyware removal tools can take a long time. If the

computer is being scanned here, you are not being charged for that time

because I'm not actively working on your machine. If I am sitting at

your house waiting for various scans to finish, my meter is running.

Also, there are other factors in computer repair that make having the

machine in the shop a better idea.

If you are unable to bring the computer in and are in the Standard

Service Area, pickup and delivery can be arranged for an additional fee

of $60.

Begging & Pleading

You should hire Elephant Boy Computers because:

* We're honest.

* We're good.

* We need the money.

It will want to run upon install. Choose the FULL scan although it may

give you a threatening message that it might take a few hours. It will

scan your entire computer in about half an hour or less if you do not have

a lot of stuff in it.

You can also go to Protection Center (Microsoft)

Download and install Spybot Search & Destroy, a great piece of software

which is free for individuals but corporations pay fees. You may be asked

for donations but it is up to you. It is very up to date and every week

you will have to download new updates, sometimes even more often. You

should check for updates every time you run it. It will give you all

su*kers leached into your registry and ask you if you wanted to remove

them. Many of them have masqueraded themselves under MS Windows names like

Windows.something. Do not hesitate to kill them all. You can trust SB S&D.

www.spybot.info/en/index.html" >www.spybot.info/en/index.html

www.spybot.info/en/spybotsd/index.html" >www.spybot.info/en/spybotsd/index.html

It also allows you to IMMUNIZE your system. It means that when you go to a

website and they try to download some kind of a Trojan to you SB S&D will

either kill it silently, or ask you if you want to do it or will kill it

and give you a notice. It is better to let it kill them all in silence.

Exerpts from SB S&D website

<quote starts>

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new

kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware

silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for

you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold

to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet

Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes

inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without

your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware.

Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because

more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm

giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

To see a list of threats Spybot-S&D can remove, in the navigation bar at

the left click on Support -->Threats. For an introduction to Spybot-S&D,

please read the tutorial. If you fear incompatibility with other software

you are now using, although we can assure you that there is no danger you

can review our compatibility overview which lists some software whose

compatibility has been analyzed.

Spybot-S&D can also clean usage tracks, an interesting function if you

share your computer with other users and don't want them to see what you

have been working on. And for professional users, Spybot-S&D allows you to

fix some registry inconsistencies and extended reports. A list of all the

application's features is also available.

<End of quote>

After you installed SB S&D Windows IE will *****integrate***** it into its

Tools Menu. In the right upper corner of IE click Tools and you will see

Spybot Search And destroy configuration item. Click on it and it will give

you options to deal with the threats that are being downloaded.

Listen to Mark Russinovich's (MS) webcast: Advanced Malware Cleaning

<www.microsoft.com/emea/spotlight/sessionh.aspx>" >www.microsoft.com/emea/spotlight/sessionh.aspx>

Downloading any 3-rd party "free" anti-spyware program (with teh exception

SB S&D) is an invitation for a disaster.

The AV (antivirus industry) is on the way to the cemetery:

The slow death of AV technology:

www.theregister.co.uk/2007/06/08/death_of_av/" >www.theregister.co.uk/2007/06/08/death_of_av/

Vista did it in.

Last note: it has been suggested around here by some unscrupulous trolls

that the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) and SB S&D do

not clean the registry. MSRT and SB S&D work on different principles. MSRT

in full mode reads RAM memory and detects patterns in the files that match

known viruses and other malware configuraions. This is why it takes so

long to run. If malicious code is detected it is also quite likely that it

has a representation in the registry. The only way to remove a particular

piece of malware is to CLEAN the registry off of this key.

SB S&D works by going thru the registry and locating known names that

match its database of malicious software. After all culprits are found the

user is asked if he/she want to remove the malicious software. If you say

OK, then the registry IS CLEANED of this set of malicious execs. The execs

themselves are killed in the respective folders.

In this sense both tools do CLEAN the registry. They do not do any

"housekeeping" which is absolutely superfluous and unnecessary. It is NOT

recommended by MS and most of the experienced users as well.

We have finally learned why Frank posts to this group. Please see the thread

Who is "nostop" ....?

In that thread Frank says he posts here because

"Same reason everyone else does dickhead!

Still wanna dance?

Frank"

I was mistaken as to why people post here. I thought it was to help people

with Vista problems, but by reading Franks posts you would think otherwise.

Does everyone else here like to use profanity every chance they get?

Do you like to demean people?

Have you anointed yourself as the Protector of Vista?

Then, according to Frank, this is the NG for you and this why people post

here.

__________________________________________________________

This part is for Frank.....I'll use simple words so that Frank can

understand.....

Frank; Vista is not a human being. It does not have feelings. It is not a

way of life. It is an Operating System. It does not need defending (let

alone from a boorish simpleton like you) it stands on its own merits or not

depending on your point of view. Vista is a thing. Please concern yourself

with something that a) you know something about and b) is worth defending.

I would like to thank you in advance.

That would be *anyone* who sold a little old lady Windows, of any

flavor. The ONE little old lady that installed Ubuntu for about nine

months ago, hasn't had one single problem with it. She even figured out

how to update from Feisty to Gutsy all by herself and she's pushing 80.

When she was running XP, all she had was problems, mainly with malware

coming through her Microsoft product, MSN Messenger. Hello?

Re:THANKS 4 ALL THE HELP,but now i have another question about securi

alias, listen.. I dont consider spam if she helps people out which she

does.. and has been doing so for years,

and just includes a link towards her site or sends people to information

there.

Why do you have to be sinical about this.

Let me tell you this, because I have been on the XP newsgroups for years,

many times I wanted to reply to a poster to help him, but Malke always got

the right answer before I could post.. lol

Sure she may have made mistakes but everyone does mistakes.

I think its a positive and healthy thing for one to want to help people and

IF they want to they can hire her for further support.

This is not spam... dont confuse things...

Bullsh¡t. She sells her services as a computer repair person and spams the

newsgroups with her web site in her sig with every post.

From her web site:

"What We Do

Troubleshooting, virus/spyware removal, data recovery, repairs and

upgrades, networking, computer training, software/hardware installation,

and generally whatever else is needed to make you and your computer happy.

We don't have a retail store, so we can provide an objective idea of what

will work best for our clients. Basically, we provide freelance technical

support to home users and small businesses. Although we can provide any

necessary hardware for clients, we do not sell hardware. Therefore, if we

recommend that you buy a new hard drive or even a new computer you can be

assured we are not saying this just to move inventory.

Rates

In-Shop Service

$40/hr., 1 hour minimum

Additional time after the first hour is charged in 30-minute increments

On-site Service

Within Fresno (Standard Service Area)

$60 for the first hour, 1 hour minimum

$40/hr. for additional time, charged in 30-minute increments

Outside Fresno (and outside Standard Service Area)

$60 travel time charge - if travel time exceeds 1 hour round-trip it

is billed at $60/hr., charged in 30-minute increments

$60/hr., 1 hour minimum - additional hours charged in 30-minute

increments

Our Standard Service Area is:

* From Marks to Cedar to the east

* From Marks to Hayes to the west

* From Bullard to the Fort Washington area to the north

* From Bullard to Belmont to the south

We do not normally bill and payment is required when the service is

rendered. We've tried to explain to the children about waiting 30 days to

eat, but they don't seem to understand.

For home users, you really should consider bringing the computer in,

especially if it is probable that your computer is infected by viruses

and/or spyware. Since Elephant Boy Computers was started many years ago,

removing viruses and other malware has gone from being relatively quick

and easy to a complex and time-consuming process. The number of malware

programs commonly known as "spyware" has exploded. These evil programs

can also be difficult to remove, and the necessary scanning with antivirus

and spyware removal tools can take a long time. If the computer is being

scanned here, you are not being charged for that time because I'm not

actively working on your machine. If I am sitting at your house waiting

for various scans to finish, my meter is running. Also, there are other

factors in computer repair that make having the machine in the shop a

better idea.

If you are unable to bring the computer in and are in the Standard Service

Area, pickup and delivery can be arranged for an additional fee of $60.

Begging & Pleading

You should hire Elephant Boy Computers because:

* We're honest.

* We're good.

* We need the money.

We'll take good care of your silicon-based life forms. Our rates are

extremely competitive, and we are shamelessly eager to please."

No lie, Frank. Live with it. Ubuntu, for many people, is just what they

need. Most home users don't use software that will only run on Windows

except games and most home users use a console for that. This lady surfs

the web, uploads photos from her digital camera, emails and uses Pidgin

now for IM.

When you consider that I charged her WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY less than a new

laptop with with Vista (or a copy of XP Home or Vista Basic for that

matter), she thinks she got a good deal, so do I and anyone with any

common sense would agree (not you).
