- Windows Vista >> No Programs will runI have been running Vista for almost a year. Then the other day it just
stopped running any programs, including explorer, excel, etc. I click on the
icon and nothing happens. I try to access them through the c-drive and still
no luck. I can't even get the task manager to come up. I'm sending this from
a different computer. It is possible this problem occured after I loaded a
program to link to my digital camera.

- Windows Vista >> Recycle bin error/bug?Okay when I drag an item to the recycle bin the graphic from empty to full
doesn't update, nor does it update when i refresh the desktop.
If I right click the recycle bin to empty it as I usually do knowing there
is something inside it, the option is greyed out.
Instead I currently have to open the recycle bin everytime just to delete an
item.
This picture may help with what I'm trying to say
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c367/omegajudgement/recyclebinerror.png
1. Item before being deleted
2. Item being dragged over recycle bin
3. Item in recycle bin while the graphic not changed
4. Right click to empty greyed out
5. Refresh page
6. Still not updated, greyed out option to empty
7. Open recycle bin and item is shown inside, missing the recycle bin due to
shoddy crop but the graphic updates to full when I open it.
How do I change it so it goes back to the way it once was?

Thank you so much. That did the trick. I had bought a laser mouse and
didn't realize this would need to be done.
Again, thanks Mr. Genius!
Let me ask you this as a follow up. I see there are other optional updates
for my computer. Can any of them cause me problems or should I download
them all? I doubt some of them apply but then you never know. I did
download all the important ones but had not done the optionals.

Hi, Nancy - The answer to your question depends on what the optional
updates are. In general, if they are drivers do not install them from
Windows Update. If you do a Custom update instead of the default
Express, you can see what the updates are. I think there's also a link
to click in Vista to see the optional updates (sorry not to be more
specific but the Vista machine isn't on now).

OK, I might have goofed the other day. There was an update for Nvidea (?)

Yes, that could be the reason. You installed a driver for your Nvidia
card from Windows Update. You can roll it back. Here is general
information about drivers, including how to roll back to the drivers
that worked.
Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:
1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).
Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.
To find out what hardware is in your computer:
1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific
model machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers
anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor or System Information for Windows.

I see ... I should go to start-programs-HP-HP update. Sometimes the windows

There was a second NVidia install that I had already done this morning.
Maybe that was a fix for the one 5 days ago because it isn't flickering at
the moment. I will try to remember to stop the automatic updates from
Windows I hope. I am very confused as you can see. Do you mean just
drivers or any Windows update?

You want to set Windows Update to automatically download the updates but
not to automatically install them. You want to have Windows Update alert
you as to when updates are downloaded and ready to install. Then you
want to look at the updates and install all security updates. You don't
want to install driver updates. You can tell by looking at the updates
what they are for.
In most cases, if everything is working well and you're not a heavy-duty
gamer you do not need to update the drivers. "If it ain't broke, don't
fix it".

Hi Malke,
I uninstalled the latest update on my nVidia driver but still have the

things but nothing helped with the flicker. It is not a constant type
thing. Just flickers every couple of minutes or so. Is my monitor going?

Not sure if this is the proper place to seek help, but I am going to ask
here. This whole Internet thing has got me a bit perplexed. I happened about
here just by clicking on the buttons on the Microsoft website.
I just received a new computer from my family for my birthday and it came
with something called "Vista Home". First off, what is this mess?
I have been happily using my current (maybe old ?) computer to do all things
I need to do. Such as, pay my bills, email friends and family, internet, and
printing. My "old" computer was from 2002, and to me, seemed , be working
fine. ( It runs XP )
Now I have been trying to just do simple things, such as install the
software for my camera and printer, and all it does is keep asking if I am
authorized??!!!
Hell. It's MY computer, and Yes, I want to INSTALL these things.
If this is the future of the PC, I will stay with my XP .
Thanks for the ears .

- Windows Vista >> Upgrading From OEM Home Premium to Full Version of UltimateI had a local PC shop build me a pc with Ultimate as the OS ...... I was not
happy with the PC and they were willing to refund all money but the price of
the Full Ultimate License that was purchased for the building of the PC
I then bought a HP Slimline that came with Vista Premium ....
Question: Can I upgrade from Premium to Ultimate using the Ultimate Full
Retail version that I own? If so, will I lose anything in this upgrade?
Are there any suggestions out there?
Thx

- Windows Vista >> Windows Vista vs Norton - idiot questionHello all,
On November 2007 I have bought a new PC â?? HP 9050 -, which included a
licence of 90 days for Norton Internet Security 2007. Iâ??ve never liked Norton
â?? itâ??s too heavy and too complicated to work with.
So I decided that, since my licence already expired, to remove Norton and
install Panda Internet Security 2008 (Iâ??ve always used Panda products and
never complained).
First, I tried to remove Norton using the removal tool (downloaded from
Symantec Site) but it didnâ??t work (donâ??t ask why, it just did not execute).
Consequently, I decided to remove Norton manually (Add/Remove programs in
Control Panel). This removal process didnâ??t have any problems.
But Iâ??ve read in several magazines and forums that we need to clean our
Registry.
In Windows Registry, Iâ??ve deleted the following entries:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Symantec
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Symnrt
HKEY_CURRENT USER \ Software \ Symantec
HKEY_USERS \ .DEFAULT \ Software \ Symantec
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ Current Version \
Uninstall \ Symsetup
After that, Iâ??ve searched in the System, including system files and hidden
files and folders, for anything related to Norton and Symantec.
For Norton, I found:
- Norton Internet Security 2007 Uninstall (Text Document)
- Norton Setup 10,2,0 (Text Document)
- Norton Antivirus (Scrip file)
- Norton Internet Security (Scrip File)
- Norton Live Update (Scrip File)
- Norton Personal Firewall (Scrip File)
For Symantec, I found:
- Folder Symantec: included the files Content (XME),
Symc_black_background_800_178 (PNG Image), Symc_int_sec (Icon),
Symc_logo_128_128 (PNG Image)
- Folder Symantec (another one): includes two folders â?? Definitions (with
file latest-hub-webauth.sql) and LifeUpdate (with file settings.liveupdate)
- Folder Symantec Shared, with a Subfolder CCPD-LC that included the file
symlcrst.dll
Iâ??ve moved all these files and folders to Recycle.
My idiot question is if I can delete definitely these files and folders from
my computer or is it any danger of causing instability to Windows?
By the way, my O.S. is Windows Vista Home Premium 32 Bits.
Thanks
