Would like to remove Vista & install XP

Windows Vista13
We recently pruchased (3/07) a new Gateway desktop with Vista on it. Vista

has been nothing but problems. My wife's employer had the same issue. They

were given copies of XP for 1 cent to replace Vista. Any idea if that

applies to home computers? We've spent hours on fixes because of Vista.

Re:Would like to remove Vista & install XP

Which Vista Edition did your Gateway come preinstalled with?

Sure, if you have your own Windows XP installation CD and Windows XP product

key that is not in use. Otherwise, the Windows Vista Home Premium version

does not confer downgrade rights. Please see:

Re:Would like to remove Vista & install XP

It takes about 20 to 30 "clicks" on our webrowser to engage the internent; we

often lose word documents, other incompatability issues. I have already

re-loaded Vista due to these issues from the operating systems disk supplied

with the computer when we purchased it. In total have spent about 15 hours

on fixes. We do not have a Windows XP CD or product key that is not in use.

I really don't want to have to buy XP and feel Microsoft should suppy it for

a reduced cost at least if not free. There are just so many problems with

Vista. I recently spoke with Microsoft directly. The tech admitted that

Vista was not ready for release when we purchased this computer and regretted

she could not help me futher. We have Windows Vista Home Premium. Any other

thoughts on this matter would be appreciated.

Take the new computer back and demand a refund. If you think they may

give you problems, go when you know there will be a lot of customers

computer store that will sell you a computer with XP and one who will

partitions and all kinds of crap-ware bundled in with it.

Good luck!

Re:Would like to remove Vista & install XP

What is causing the requirement for 20 to 30 clicks to 'engage' with your

web browser? I have Windows Vista installed on 3 computers and all I do is

double click Internet Explorer icon on the desktop when I am surfing on any

of them, it opens Google.com as the default home page, if I want to go

somewhere I click in the address bar and type the desired URL, if I don't

want to leave a specific web page, I simply open a new Tab and type in a new

URL. What in that requires 20 to 30 clicks? I do understand you might be

required to download new or updated plug ins.

The only thing I can think of that could require so many clicks is if

someone was surfing sites that intentially try to force drive by downloads.

Sometimes the OEMs themselves install additional freeware or shareware

programs that install plug ins that can cause all kind of havoc.

Could you be a bit more specific on what the fixes are that required 15

hours of your time? What are the problems with Vista that are so many, is

user interface related, application compatibility, hardware compatibility?

We can't help you if you don't tell us whats really going on, that is what

these newsgroups are setup for, to help you fix the problems.

As for downgrading XP, since its an OEM copy of Windows Vista, the chance of

getting your licensed changed for Windows XP is really up to the OEM, not

Microsoft in this case. I would suggest you contact Gateway if your machine

is still under warranty about the possibility of this happening.

Microsoft has nothing to do with your problems. Its a name brand computer

built and manufactured by Gateway, they are the ones responsible for

configuring and testing the system before it was shipped to you. If there is

anybody to have issue with here it is most certainly Gateway.

You still have not even put into detail what type of problems you are having

I am not familiar with Gateway computers because here in Spain we don't

have them. Do they have Gateway stores or do they have to be bought on

line? If there is no brick and mortar store, you're right, you have a

battle on your hands and you can best believe that Microsoft won't help

you at all. What's worse, some of your hardware may only have Vista

drivers and won't work with XP.

Gateway assembled the computer and sold the system.

Therefore Gateway is responsible that the system they sold functions

properly.

"I didn't know that Gateway has made..."

It is OEM and OEM is treated as if it is manufactured, sold and

Other than updates and a few other exceptions, all support, if any,

comes from the OEM.
