- Windows Vista >> Flip functionalityI love the 3D flip feature. I've mapped it to my mouse center button and
it is very handy, but I have one question. Why, when I flip to the
desktop, is the side bar is gone. The only way I can access my sticky
notes is to minimize any open windows. Is there a setting I've missed?
TIA.

I used to be able to add meta-data in the way of "tags" to jpeg files. But
now, Windows Explorer cannot seem to get the job done. It will let me go

In what may be a related problem, Microsoft Photo Gallery will allow me to

But when I open the AUTOCAD program I get a "SmartHeap Library

Is there any way to get AUTOCAD to work???
I tried to change the Compatability to "98", thinking that might fix it but

- Windows Vista >> DefragmentingIn WinXP the defragmenting procedure was transparent, simple and
straightforward. In Vista it is nothing but. The complete insensitivity of
the designers to the users psychology is appalling. I started defragmenting
5 hours ago. It is just one click of a button. There is a message:
Defragmenting Hard Disks. I wanted to defragment only one disk: C:. Why
disks?
What is it doing now? There is no color bar of WinXP which showed the
progress in a reassuring manner. You could clearly see how much time you had
left. You could do some shopping, etc.
Is there any way the old display could be brought back?
If not, then perhaps I should switch to my WinXP partition and do
defragmenting from there? How about defragmenting Vista C: from WinXP D:
drive? Is it going to work?
thanks.

- Windows Vista >> Frequent Vista problemI have been having a problem with my Windows Vista Home Premium installation
for the past week or so, with the problem getting more frequent day by day.
I usually notice this happen after a period of inactivity, but the duration
of the inactivity is seemingly random.
Basically, I will come back to the computer to see that Firefox or whatever
windows I might have open have stopped responding. I attempt to close with
the X to no avail, then try to close using the Task Bar. When this fails, I
try to open the Task Manager to close the program manually, only to lock up
the computer for 45-60 seconds on a black screen, and then receive the
message "Logon process has failed to create the security options dialog.
Failure - Security Options". Clicking OK on this dialog takes me back to my
now totally unresponsive computer. No windows can be closed by any means,
and the computer must be turned off manually, which I hate doing.
Is there anything that might be broken with Logon Process, or is there any
way I can fix this problem? Vista and I have enough fights as it is, I'd
really like to decrease our argument fodder by one instance, if possible.

- Windows Vista >> Classic/old Songs DownloadHi:
Many thanks for all the responses to my previous thread, ... 'Listening
Songs/music.'
Now, I have one more question to ask, ....
I love to listen to older songs, mostly 70', 80's and even more older ones.
However, I have NO clue to download, much less which site I should visit
to accomplish my task, ... download and listen.
I would be truly appreciated it if any of you on this board would direct me
which site, how to dowload and all other necessary steps for successful, and
FIRST of all, safe to download songs I love to listen.
Thanks,

- Windows Vista >> Speech Recognition limited to commands...For some reason my Speech Recognition only seems to work with commands, when
i open up wordpad or notepad (or any other program I'm supposed to dictate
in) All I get is "What was that?" from the speech bar. I can control my
computer all da long with commands so I know it is'nt my mic. Also I know
that it is capable of dictation because if I use the How Do I... command, I
can say "How Do I Eat A Pizza", sure enough, on cue the Windows Help and
Support window pops up with Best results for "Eat A Pizza". But it does not
work with any kind of dictation, I've tried enabling "enable dictation
anywhere", I have done about 4 training sessions with it and the tutorials
went smoothly, even the microphone setup told me that Vista hears me fine.
I've tried just about every combination of options I could see as having a
possible effect to no avail. Could anyone help me with this?

- Windows Vista >> ideas for windows 71 True 3D rendered desktop
The current Vista desktop is a compromise between new-world 3D rendering and
compatibility with the old 2D world. This has to stop with Windows 7 â?? we
need to see a fully 3D rendered space thatâ??s just beautiful to use. It must
ooze class, and really make use of the processor power available.
2 Make security work properly
No, it isnâ??t good enough to have a weak username and password that never
changes. Make Business users go for a third-party authentication system â??
smart card, fingerprint reader and so on. Make business laptops tighter in
their default configuration. And make the home experience much more robust,
with proper separation of data between parent and child on a shared device.
3 Only three versions, and no more 32-bit
All this versionitis gives everyone a headache. Letâ??s have Home, Business
and Ultimate. And thatâ??s it. No mucking around with neutered N versions, Home
Better, Business Lovely and Corporate Got-Most-Bits. The marketplace hasnâ??t
been fooled by this obfuscation, so perform a gentlemanly climbdown, please.
And while youâ??re at it, cut the 32-bit version. Some will be upset with this
â?? tough. All todayâ??s machines are 64-bit compatible, and keeping Windows 7 in
32-bit land is just pandering to the old school.
4 Remove the DRM; mandate signing for drivers & apps
Vista is riddled with DRM, and it does it no good at all. The world is
moving away from DRM, and Microsoft should get out of bed with the
monopolists who want to mandate how, where and when content is viewed.
Microsoft should stop viewing DRM as a profit centre. Meanwhile, it should
come down hard on drivers and app vendors â?? driver and app signing should be
mandatory for Windows 7. Mutton dressed as lamb has been foisted on the users
for too long now, and itâ??s time for vendors to put up or shut up.
5 Make Speech and video recognition first-class
Speech is one of those jam-tomorrow things â?? like Star Trek, weâ??re promised
a future that never quite arrives. Meanwhile, millions are poured into
Microsoft Research, and itâ??s time for it to deliver. Automatic face
recognition from a webcam, for example: see what Iâ??m doing, see whether Iâ??m
busy, listen to find out if Iâ??m talking to someone.
6 Fix the storage mess and support all formats
It will be 2010 and weâ??ll still be stuck on an old-fashioned, if reliable
and trusty, file system in NTFS. Do we want drive letters? No. Do we even
want to see drive volumes? No. Give us properly self-managing, reliable
storage that can auto-grow. Something that can make sure our information is
on more than one spindle. But make it completely transparent. And donâ??t force
Windows-centric file formats down our throat every five minutes.
7 Give us the powerful and long-promised Assistants
Remember all those promises about software that would notice what you were
doing, learn from it, and make good suggestions? I donâ??t mean the laughable
Clippy or Dog, I mean tools that are constantly scanning what youâ??re doing,
your diary and email, and can automate your repetitive work processes. Itâ??s
about time these things delivered to the mainstream.
8 Offer a family pack
Charging full price, or almost full price, for multiple installs in the same
household is daylight robbery. Microsoft offered a family discount on Vista
for US families with multiple PCs, so why not everywhere? Learn from the Home
Student editions, and look at the success of Appleâ??s licensing model. Let
people pay a fair price for a home-wide licence without feeling that theyâ??ve
been flayed alive.
9 Make backup, restore and disaster recovery go away
Windows 7 must, repeat must, make the whole topic of backup, restore and
disaster recovery disappear, especially in the home and small-business space.
No excuses, no mumbling about â??third-party partnersâ??, no shuffling of the
hands. Just make the issue disappear. If users lose data on the Windows 7
platform, for whatever reason, then consider it to be solely your fault, not
theirs.
10 Make third-party software vendors toe the line
Itâ??s time to get tough on the third-party vendors whose products are in the
â??weak to dreadfulâ?? sector. Iâ??m tired of third-party apps that muscle their
way into my system and attempt to take over. Publish a style guide and stick
to it. Make it part of the logo compliance, and make logo compliance part of
the digital-signing regime.

- Windows Vista >> Windows.old FolderI have a computer which was built by a company that sells parts. I paid them
to build it from scratch. They only guaranteed the hardware, but they
installed Vista Ultimate to make it complete. It slowly had more problems
each day. I didn't know about this site. Finally, I decided to start over
with the beginning -- install Vista and all my programs! When I "finished,"
I observed that I had a folder labeled windows.old. In the meantime, I
realized that I had forgotten to installed another program that had extra
things on it. I decided to find out if windows.old would help. Does anyone
know how you can move a sub-folder from windows.old (Vista) to the folder
"Program Files" and make it work? I am still (again) running Vista.

- Windows Vista >> SP1 - new errors?I thought I had "clean machines" until I installed SP1. Now I get two new
errors - Kerberos event id 15016 and DistributedCOM event id 10016. Any
suggestions on how to make these go away. Seems like Server 2008 is now
part of Vista and has created some new situations. I am surprised there is
no action on the internet concerning these errors since I have two machines,
one running Ultimate and one running Home Premium and they both get Kerberos
but only the Home Premium machine gets the added bonus of the DistributedCOM
error. I read the MSFT Technet article on the DistributedCOM error but
could not figure out what I had to do. Help would be appreciated.
