- Windows Vista >> Batch file copyI have short cut to a batch file that copies files from a network server to
the local machine. It works fine on XP, but it won't work on Vista Home.
I've tried right clicking on the short cut and saying "Run as Administrator"
and that doesn't work either. When I open a DOS prompt window and type the
copy command there, I get an "Access Denied" error. So I'm guessing the
batch file is executing properly, it's just failing on all the copy commands.
I CAN manually drag and drop the files from the server to the local machine
- I just want a way to do it automatically through a batch file.
I don't normally use Vista, so I may be missing something fairly basic here.
Sorry, if that's the case.

- Windows Vista >> Protected Zone in VistaI wanted to post this message in the Security forum of Vista but Vista would
not help me to find my forgotten username and password; kept merely
rejecting my various entry attempts. Good security.
When my friends ask me how I am finding Vista as compared with XP, I merely
tell them that I have found no new features or functionality. There are only
more autocratic and annoying controls and Vista tries to organize things for
user without giving him the freedom to decide whether he wants his files,
folders, task bars, toolbars and what not by Vista's own idiosyncratic
ideas.
Today I found the Internet Explorer denying me access to the web-page of
Star World, a TV channel seen in Asia, when I tried to see the channel
schedule for today. Obviously, it is idiotic to bar me from a web-page which
I frequently check and should not suggest any harm to the most sensitive
nose of any security expert. There are already three other security barriers
raised by Vista, operational in my system: 1) Firewall, 2) Malware
protection and 3) Other security settings. On the top of that now comes the
Protected zone which is supposed to protect the user from malware.
Could Microsoft not have provided at least the option of excluding web-pages
listed by the User in his Favourites list, since those are pages which he
probably visits regularly? No such luck. I got so annoyed with this imposed
control that I went and unticked the box enabling this idiotic control which
has a meaning only if a child is using a computer and is trying to reach a
site by-passing parental control.
I hope the Security experts of Micorsoft put this message also on the
Security Forum, since I cannot remember the username and password assigned
to me.

- Windows Vista >> CDROM Disc DriveI have a Vista Home Premium Inspiron 530 from Dell. My disc drive was working
normally until last week. Now the icon has disappeared off the Computer page,
I don't get a window come up on the monitor when I insert a CD, and I have
been able to find nothing on my hard drive to correct this. Whenever I go
into anything connected with the disc drive it tells me that it doesn't
recognise it and so I can't download a driver.
Any help would be much appreciated. I have had so many problems with Vista
since I got it, and long for my old Windows XP, which never gave me these
problems

Premium 32 bit installed. I read MS doesn't support OEM installed OS's. I
take it there are two options;
1. Get Toshiba to send me a Vista Home Premium 'recovery disk set' with the
64 bit edition on it
2. Just buy Vista Home Premium 64 bit (standard, not upgrade) myself and
install it.
Have I missed anything?

- Windows Vista >> Vista stop error code 124Okay, about 2 months ago I bought a new laptop from dell. everything
worked fine for a while but about 2 weeks ago I started getting weird
blue screen errors after a software update I did, after uninstalling
the software and still having BSOD messages I decided to reformat the
drive.
after reformatting I ran into annoying BSOD error messages that kept
causing the reinstall to fail. I always deleted the partition and
created a new one and after hours talking with tech support I finally
got the OS installed....BUT
Now, the only way I can log in to windows is in safe mode...every time
I try to log in normally somtimes it will make it to the log in screen,
most of the time it doesn't, if it DOES make it to the login screen
sometimes it will actually let me login (VERY RARELY) and even then if
it does let me log in it's only for less than a minute before it
crashes to a BSOD...
I keep getting error code 0x00000124 and it's VERY VERY frustrating,
I've ran every damn diagnostic test on my machine literally at least 5
times and there are no hardware errors. The tech support person at dell
also assured me that if the tests show no errors then the hardware is
fine. so WHY is this happening.....any help would be greatly
appreciated.
**ALSO I forgot to mention however that if the BSOD occurs before it
gets to the login screen it's not a stop error 124 it's a stop error
code that looks like this
STOP: 0x0000009c (0x00000005,
0x846E49D0, 0xF2000018, 0x02000E0F)
**
If you need to know any specs about my pc just ask and I can tell you
w/e you need to know.

- Windows Vista >> User account logs in but fails to display desktopI set up multiple users using Rick for my desktop as the initial
administrator user. Early on I turned off User Account Control to avoid the
annoying and continuous requests for permissions to do virtually anything on
my own computer in my own desktop. I subsequently turned User Account
Control back on to facilitate the installation of a software program. After
rebooting the PC I was able to log on to Rick but after waiting forever found
that my desktop would not display. The only way I could display anything was
to use Ctrl/Alt/Del key sequence which then allowed me to switch to a second
user to reset the User Account Control to off. After rebooting I was able to
display the desktop for Rick. I since tried various settings changes to try
to recover from the loss of my desktop display while User Account Control is
in the on condition. After numerous attempts I am now no longer able to
display my desktop in either the on or off condition for User Account Control
even though I show that I am still logged in as Rick. How do a regain access
to my desktop display under user name Rick?

- Windows Vista >> Failure w/ Vista laptop using Remote Desktop Connection To XP compI am trying to configure my laptop to be able to work on an office computer.
I was able to do this with my home desktop without a problem because both of
those computers were using Windows XP.
I have installed the VPN on the Vista laptop & I can connect without a
problem. However, when I lauch Remote Desktop Connection and I log in I get
the following error message:
"The remote desktop cannot verify the identity of the computer you want to
connect to. This problem can occur if: 1. The remote comkputere is running
a version of windows that is earlier than Windows Vista. 2. The Remote
computer is configured to support only the RDP security layer."
Does this mean that it is IMPOSSIBLE for a Vista computer to do a remote
connection to an XP Computer?

Windows Vista >> 64 bit processors.
I'm looking to buy a new laptop preinstalled with Vista. Most new machines
I see in stores have Intel or AMD 64 bit processors, however, the OS and of
course all apps are only 32 bit. These laptops also only have 1-2 GB RAM.
Is there really any point in buying a 64 bit machine if all it's running is
32 bit OS and apps? Why would manufacturers even build these units with 64
bit processors?

Windows Vista >> 64 bit processors.
For most users it's better to stay with 32 bit Vista at this time. Hardware
drivers and some kinds of software are much less available for the 64 bit
version. There's no downside to the 64 bit CPU. It allows possible future
upgrading. Most current CPU designs are 64 bit. Once these get into
production, there's not a lot of sense in manufacturers continuing to make
and enhance a separate 32 bit version.

All new computers today use 64-Bit processors.
The manufacturers either incorrectly make the assumption that the use
does not want a 64-Bit operating system, or have built the computer wit
components (other than the CPU) for which no 64-Bit drivers ar
available
What you really should do before you commit to a purchase, is t
confirm by the supplier whether the laptop you want can come preloade
with Vista x64. And do not allow them to charge you extra either
because there is no difference in price between the 32-bit and 64-bi
versions of Windows Vista.
In fact, if you where to purchase the retail edition of Vista Ultimate
you'll get BOTH 32-Bit and 64-Bit editions in the same package

Windows Vista >> 64 bit processors.
64 Bit processors is really just a state of the industry right now, the
technology is there so why not make it available? Regardless the majority of
applications for the desktop remain largely 32 bit, it is prepapring for
inevitable when there will be a mass transition to 64 bit, whether by the
Industry or end users. For instance, suppose you start doing a lot of
technical work that goes beyond the limits of 32 bit computing requiring
more than 4 GBs of RAM and real 64 bit OS such as the 64 bit version of
Vista, then you won't have to worry about changing out all your hardware to
take advantage of it.
The market that understands the capabilities, advantages and disadvantages
of using it, the biggest
advantage of all has to be the support for a larger memory address space
that allows you to do more number crunching with scientific, financial and
other engineering applications that use a lot of memory. Hopefully in the
future, more mainstream applications will support the platform and harness
its capabilities, but with the majority of systems coming with 1 to 2 GBs of
memory, and 64 bit really addressing larger amounts up to 128 GBs, you won't
see a lot of apps for now.

1) there is a 64bit vista.
2) other OSs have been 64 bit capable for a number of years. I started
with 64 bits around 2000 on a DEC Alpha (yes, I know it's a different
architecture) and 64 bit Linux has been available for several years.
Manufacturers don't always build for the lowest common denominator.

Generally correct.

1GB is iffy, depending on what apps you run. But 2GB is sufficient for
almost everyone who doesn't run particularly memory-hungry
applications.
> Is there really any point in buying a 64 bit machine if all
That's what the marketplace is like now. There isn't a whole lot of
choice.
> it's running is
> 32 bit OS and apps?
You won't see any advantage from the 64-bit processor now, but over
the next few years there will be more and more 64-bit apps available.
Having the 64-bit processor now puts you in the position of being able
to upgrade to 64-bit Windows and apps when doing so makes sense.
> Why would manufacturers even build these units with 64

Because that's what the chip manufacturers are selling them.

So why on Vista 64bit Ultimate, with 4GB Crucial
533 RAM, 1066FSB, 3.06GHz processor, Asus mobo,
are my large Excel macros running like a dog as 32bit?
Typical of MS rubbish?
Not to mention many apps won't install, Azerus based
USB wireless adapters seemingly no drivers, etc.

AFAIK, Excel and the rest of Office exist only as 32-bit programs.
64-bit Vista will run 32-bit programs.

True. There's lots of 64-bit hardware around, but software doesn't
seem to have caught up yet.

I'm using Home Premium and I wanted to change the language imput method

I understand you can't install additional IME's onto this edition of

whole language of the OS to Japanese - I simply want to type in
Japanese output (preferably with the choice between Hiragana and

wrong about the additional languages thing?
Thanks!

- Windows Vista >> DreamScene bug reportHi,
Can someone please point out where I can report bugs in Windows
Vista? Here are the details:
1) Install DreamScene
2) Set the desktop background to vid1337.mpg (the default animation
that comes with it)
3) Maximize a window
4) Either click on the "Show Desktop" icon many times fast or keep
WindowsKey+D down
5) The bug is that the background animation flickers. Whenever "Show
Desktop" is invoked the first frame of the animation displays for a
split second before the correct frame is rendered and the animation
resumes where it left off.
6) Expected behavior: the animation should resume where it left off
and not display the first frame
This is reproducible 100% of the time on my machine. It is easier
to spot if you use another video as your background where the
difference between the first frame and other frames are far more
noticeable.
