- Windows Vista >> Windows Vista - Shortcut Keys to a ShortcutPrior to Vista, when I assigned a shortcut key to a shortcut, for example to
launch Microsoft Excel, I would do CTRL + ALT + E, every time I pressed the
key combination, it would open a new instance of Microsoft Excel. It was
handy and useful to me. With Vista, I can't do that anymore, it only launches
one instance of the application and when I would use the same combination, it
brings focus back to the application that was already launched.
I understand that this is a change in Vista and in many instances it is
useful.
If you know a way to change the behaviour to pre-Vista, please share.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=95E24C87-8732-48D5-8689-AB826E7B8FDF&displaylang=en
However, the latest supported operating system for this is shown as being
Windows XP. There is no indication as to whether this download is supported
on Media Center or Vista.
Can some one assure me that this download is Ok for Vista, or perhaps point
me to a Word Viewer that is Vista certified?

- Windows Vista >> How to compress one large file to multiple filesHi,
I would like to compress a file from e.g. 20 MB to several files of each
approx 5 MB, e.g. to be able to send them by email where size is restricted.
The problem is that the file itself only compresses to approx 18 MB, so I
would like to compress to several files. I believe to remember I did this for
earlier versions, but cannot seem to find this on Vista. Anyone knows how to
do this?
Highly appreciate any good suggestions! Thx

- Windows Vista >> Driver installation problemI've performed a new installation of Vista on my HP Pavilion DV5051EA.
Initially it worked fine... but after some weeks I've experienced a very
annoying problem when connecting new USB devices. The installation of the
drivers takes a very long time (about 20 minutes), even if the device is a
simple USB memory. If the device is more "complex" (e.g. a mobile phone), the
installation is longer, because Windows has to install multiple drivers (a
mobile phone is seen as multiple devices: usb modem, usb phone, usb obex, and
so on, and each installation takes a long time!). Sometimes the installation
of a driver fails for timeout and I can't use the device! Usually, if the
installation is successful, the next time I reconnect the device I don't have
to wait, because the drivers are already installed. But sometimes, e.g. if I
change USB port, Vista starts to install drivers again.
This problem is very annoying, especially for these reasons:
* while Vista is installing drivers, the "SYSTEM" process takes all the CPU
power, so for 20-30 minutes the PC is very very slow to use!
* even though I can use the USB devices already installed, if I have to copy
some files to my friend's USB memory that is different from mine, we have to
wait for a long time! It takes less time to burn a CD!
* I've not managed to install some devices due to the timeout error while
installing drivers, so at this moment I can't use my webcam and my Nokia
phone in PC Suite mode.
I've given Vista a chance, and at first I was happy because I like it and
apps work fine, but now this problem is making the use of my PC a real
sufference!

Windows Vista >> a drive in a RAID 0 is failing
Hello,
Shortly after installing Vista SP1 I have started to get message "a drive in
Raid 0 is failing".
This sounds bad. I have tried running checkdisk on my hard drive but it does
not show any problems.
If I reinstall the OS from scratch, will it fix the problem? Or is this a
hardware problem?

Windows Vista >> a drive in a RAID 0 is failing
Hi Rich,
It is bad, and it's a hardware issue that will not be fixed by reinstalling
the operating system. If a drive fails in a RAID0 array, you will lose
everything on that array as the data stream is split between the drives
(commonly referred to as striping), niether will contain the full data set,
there is no failsafe in a striped set.
Backup data NOW, first and foremost, do not delay. You can check the state
of the drive with an integrity tool from the drive manufacturer, it should
tell you which one is failing (it'll list them by serial#, you need to pull
the disks to determine which one it is). You will need to replace the
failing drive, then reinstall from scratch unless you possess imaging
software and can capture an image before the inevitable collapse.

Very simple.
If your drive is failing it must be replaced...at once!!!!!

Windows Vista >> a drive in a RAID 0 is failing
are you using software for your raid or hardware? goto the website o
who ever maked
the harddrives and download the Diagnostics Tool to check you
harddrivers . i'd get a dos version if your using hardware raid. the
break down your raid and check your drives.
the only thing is after you break down your raid you may have to do
clean install again.

Windows Vista >> a drive in a RAID 0 is failing
Just to drive Rick's point home, backup immediately. Back up eve
before running diagnostics on the drives. IF a drive is failing, you
time is limited. Diagnostics can run a drive through its paces, and yo
don't want to waste the remaining life of the drive beating it up wit
diagnostics apps.
If it turns out that the drive is ok, well, you wasted a little time.

The other response have given you very good advice. Back up your data now!
I'll give you some more advice. When you replace the drive (if it needs
replacement, more in a minute) don't set up RAID 0. If you do, use a
dedicated RAID controller (not a motherboard controller) and drives that are
designed for RAID use.
Now for the more info. The drive may not be failing depending on your setup.
If you have used a motherboard RAID controller and standard consumer hard
drives this may just be a timing problem. The results will inevitably be the
same, you will lose all the data on the array so you do need to backup now.
Most motherboard RAID controllers use the computer's CPU. A real RAID
controller has it's own CPU. Motherboard controllers are really a form of
software RAID with some hardware assistance. Most consumer hard drives are
not designed for RAID. With RAID 0 the controller tries to queue commands to
the disks in order to use them more efficiently. Most consumer drives don't
support this. How does all this affect you? If you are stressing out the CPU
then try to perform some intensive disk I/O the drives may not respond in
time (or too fast) and get out of synch with the RAID controller. This
causes the controller to think there is a drive error and report the drive
as failing. If this happens enough times the RAID controller will eventually
give up on the drive and take it off line. Because RAID 0 has no redundancy
when the drive goes off line you lose all your data even though the drive is
fine, it was all just a timing problem.

Windows Vista >> a drive in a RAID 0 is failing
OK, I have backed up as much as I can.
Backing up and reinstalling would be fine if Microsoft put all configuration
data in one place, but as it is spread all over the hard-disc taking a back
up is not straightforward. OK, I back up "Documents" - but then there is
Outlook data buried somewhere, fax data buried somewhere else, windows media
player metadata buried somewhere else, favourites in another locationm and
so on - and there is no point in even tryingto back up configurations and
settings.
But having done all that, the crash still has not happened. In the end, I
just fiddled around in the Intel Raid controller software and set it to
ignore the problem and so far no crash and no more warnings.
If it does crash, I'm all set to go back to XP. The only thing that has been
making me stick with Vista until now is that a full reinstall is so much
work - maybe this will make me bite the bullet...

- Windows Vista >> WinExplorer giving blank frames, no contentHello, all. I've been scowering the groups and other forums for a
couple of days to try to find a solution to my problem, and at long
last I've come to put my sour news on the table for all to think
about...
I can't honestly say that my problem is related to the new SP1 on my
Vista Ultimate, but it does seemed eerily timed with my issue.
A few days ago, my Window's Explorer started freaking out... Any icons
that I create on the desktop remain "faceless", showing me only the
blank default icon. ANY window launched through the explorer process
will open only a frame, with a blank title bar, empty address and
search bars, and working minimize/close buttons, yet no content. I
see right through where the window content should be, straight into
the background behind it.
Explorer's process is CONSTANTLY stealing away all extra processing
time, rather than giving it to the system idle process. The idle
process *never* has a CPU allotment. It is constantly zero. Explorer
seems to allow other processes to open just fine, and all other
programs seem to open normally. However, any window, including all
"explore" windows, normally "open"ed windows, Control Panel, Programs
and Features window, etc etc... they're all broken. None of them open
properly.
Additionally, my ability to interact with the Start menu is seemingly
busted. When I click on a folder listed there, it changes its icon to
the little hourglass moving around on the little folder, as if it's
trying to discover the files listed therein. It *never* succeeds.
I've left my blank framed windows open all night, just to see if it
would ever finally show me anything, but to no avail.
I've thoroughly scanned my machine with every concievable program, and
I find nothing out of the ordinary, such as spyware or viruses. Every
log file that I make out of Hijack This seems completely normal to
me. All my services running are normal. All my startup entries are
normal. Everything seems normal.
One odd quirk that I noticed only moments ago: While downloading (a
World of Warcraft patch on my faster internet connection for my
brother) using the uTorrent client to obtain it, I discovered that I
can tell uTorrent to open the file's containing folder, and it will
successfully launch a window in Explorer that is fully functional. By
no other means can I seem to achieve this same behavoir out of
Explorer. When this magic uTorrent-spawned Explorer window is
running, it's process in the Task Manager stays at normal CPU
consumption, as expected, while the original explorer process
(presumably the desktop/general interface instance) continues to steal
away the clock cycles.
In order to access my files, I typically have been opening notepad via
a .txt file on my desktop, and choosing "open" and then changing the
file filter to "All files", and then I browse around and rightclick
and choose "open" (so as to actually launch the file, and not open it
in Notepad!!). This works 100%. I have no problems whatsoever with
this approach, other than its innate clunkiness.
The changes I've made in my system seem completely unrelated to this
problem, and even if I did figure out that it was somehow something
that I installed, I cannot so much as open a window to properly choose
to uninstall said program. Recently, I've installed only a trial for
a program called MorphVOX (which seems to be functioning normally... I
don't really care for it in the end, but I can't really unistall it,
given my dillemma) and I was doing some video editing in Adobe
Premiere. (One of Premiere's little byproduct files is on my desktop,
and Explorer *really* stops working entirely if I try to delete it.
Not sure what that's all about.)
Has ANYBODY experienced something similar? I've been booting into my
extra little partition for WinXP recently :) Once again, all other
fucntionality seems intact on my machine. All virus and spyware
protection seems uncompromised and running cleanly.
(sorry to be so long winded :) )
Tim
Dell Dimension 4500S, 1152mb RAM, 2GHz processor, Vista Ultimate SP1,
and a broken generic video card driver that Vista doesn't like :D
trust me--- that's completely unrelated to my problem!)
