- Windows Vista >> Error=429 : ActiveX component can't create objectHi,
I have a problem in Vista Home Premium with two commercial programs,
one in VB and the other in a script environment. Both give the above
message.
I have spent hour investigating and have got to the following point.
I can correct the error temporarily by running "regsvr32 scrrun.dll"
from the CMD prompt (Run as Administrator). The error is eliminated in
both programs but returns when the computer is re-booted.
If I re-start the machine in Safe Mode the error remains corrected.
I have tried preventing all start-up programs from loading at re-boot
but this did not eliminate the problem.
I suspect that data is loaded to the registry at boot time and this
contains the corruption, however I do not know how to proceed further.
Any assistance would be appreciated !

- Windows Vista >> ease of use: how to always use on-screen keyboard in Welcome screenI just installed Vista on a computer. I can not use a keyboard because
of disability. So I use the on-screen keyboard of vista. To log in on
the Welcome screen I have to click Ease of Use center and select the
on-screen keyboard. On the desktop the on-screen keyboard is
automatically started.
Is there a way to bypass the Ease of Use Center and have the on-screen
keyboard start up automatically in the Welcome screen ?

- Windows Vista >> Anytime Upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Vista UltimateHi all....
I have a new HP Pavilion 9628nr laptop that came with Vista Home Premium
pre-loaded on it.
I purchased the Vista Ultimate Anytime Upgrade directly from Microsoft and
saved the license file to the hard drive on the laptop. I've tried to
upgrade to Ultimate about 3 times, using the Anytime Upgrade option, but it
keeps failing.
The upgrade gets almost to the end of the process and then it throws an
error stating that there are some system components that cannot be upgraded
and that I should check my machine to make sure it is compatible.
I have checked the laptop and it is fully compatible with Vista Ultimate.
I've got 240 GB of hard drive space (about 200 GB free), 2 GB of RAM and all
the latest drivers for my hardware.
I paid $159.00 to purchase the Ultimate Anytime Upgrade option directly from
Microsoft, but am unable to install it. If I can't use it, does anyone know
if MS has a return policy for uninstallable upgrades?
I'd much rather be able to install Ultimate as I have it on my desktop and
need the capabilities it has (RDP, etc.) on the laptop. Any ideas?

- Windows Vista >> Vista Home Premium Backup function. Is there a way to set the backup program to do a full system backup in Home
Premium ? Or will I need to get a third party backup program ?
I just spent a full day restoring my system due to an HD failure, Took 2 min
to restore the auto backup of my personal folders, lot of good that does.
According to MS full backup is only avalable in Ultimate and Business
versions.
Thanks for any help on this...

- Windows Vista >> Vista TPWhat would happen to wiping your ass, if MS manufactured toilet paper?
First you'd have to activate your roll of toilet paper. Then you'd need
to validated it. Of course the license will state that you can only use
your roll of toilet paper on the first ass it was used on. If your roll
of toilet paper was installed on an older toilet paper dispenser, it
won't work, or work so slow that you have to sh*t again by the time
you've pulled out enough toilet paper.
The toilet paper would of course be full of bugs and nonfunctional for a
lot of people until the first Service Pack, that is if they can install
it at all because there are no drivers for your older TP dispensers. But
of course, because the original installation is so screwed up, SP1 will
fail, and they just have an unusable roll of TP.
So MS would make a easy thing into a chore, and many users will just
switch to using a shower to wipe their ass, as that is now easier, or
they'll want to install the old XP version of TP that works both faster
and easier.
On the bright side, public restrooms could be converted in bath houses
for Republicans & Fundamentalist Christians.

- Windows Vista >> Firewall for VistaI'm looking for suggestions on a decent third party firewall for Vista. For
XP, I was using Sygate.
What I'm looking for in a firewall is one that
1. Allows you to setup MAC and IP filtering so that only certain MAC
addresses and IP Addresses can access a pc on the intranet.
2. Shows you a list of all running applications and their status - ie
approved, denied, must ask for internet access
3. Prompts you when a new application tries to access the net.
Number 2 is rather important as I often find myself logging into the
firewall just to check which applications are actually running and
communicating on the net at any given time.
Thank you

- Windows Vista >> system volume information? What is it?following my earlier post reference unusual amounts of hard disk space being
used......................................I have partitioned a 300gb HDD so
that C has 240GB and D has the remainder.
C is reporting that I have used 200GB but this cannot be so as I only have
operating system and a few progs and pics plus about 16gb music so where has
all the used space come from?
I probably have only used about 50gb max. I cannot find any file/folder that
has excessive amounts of data. How do I rectify this?
I have subsequently found a file called System volume information and it is
taking up 159gb of hard disk space but if I try to view the file there seems
to be nothing in it...what do I do to release all of this hard drive space?

You should take a look at the reviews over at Amazon, if you have not
already done so. Here is my two pennies worth:
For starters, as a self-study text book, I recommend "Windows Vista - Step
by Step":
http://www.microsoft.com/mspress/books/9362.aspx
For reference, and maybe that is all a seasoned Windows user needs, take a
look at "Windows Vista in a Nutshell":

Windows Vista >> What is the best book on Vista?
For basics
Windows Vista Inside Out
http://www.amazon.com/Windows-Vista-Inside-Out-Bott/dp/0735622701/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1204588923&sr=8-1
I don't think it quite measures up to the XP Inside Out book, but this is a
complete guide to basic Vista use. The XP book seemed very different from
the hundreds of other XP books, with real insight gained from the use of XP
and understanding its quirks. The VISTA version reads more like a manual
(that spends way too much time on Windows Media Center, if you ask me), and
not much time is spent with the finder points. Hence, it is more for basic
than advanced users.
More in-depth
Windows Vista Resource Kit
http://www.amazon.com/Windows-Vista-TM-Resource-Kit/dp/0735622833/ref=pd_rhf_p_t_1
More a resource/reference than user manual....lot of good stuff here
For Vista freaks....
Windows Internals, Version 5
http://www.amazon.com/Windows%C2%AE-Internals-Including-Windows-PRO-Developer/dp/0735625301/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1204589386&sr=1-3
This book is not out yet, but if it is anything like Version 4, which
addressed XP and earlier OSs, it will be the most indepth, technical look at
the new infrastructure of Vista and Server 2008. Reading this book makes
your head hurt, but for every piece that flies over your head, that 10
percent that takes root is a "Oh, wow. I didn't know that moment."

I got both of my 'learning about vista' books by borrowing from my public
library. The ones I got benefit from were:
- Windows Vista beyond the Manual", Haskell & Campbell
- Windows Vista Step By Step" (as mentioned above)
My method is to place the book on the desk beside the computer, and go
through it page by page, making notes such as the following directly into a
Word document on my computer; thus it is easily found for future reference.
This way I only log the items that are either new or especially relevant for
me. Example of my notes are:
"Windows Vista beyond the Manual", Haskell & Campbell
· Pg 96: Start/Properties/Start Menu/Customize/Display as a menu
(and other items).
· Pg 99: WKey + R = Run
· Pg 99: Rt click/Explore from Start Button
· Pg 100: drop down menu within breadcrumb trail
· Pg 101: use Alt to toggle short-key combinations and classic menus
in Explorer.
· Pg 103: Folder Options/View/Use check boxes to display items.
· Pg 106: Control Panel/Indexing Options - need to explore what
about "Index Properties and File Contents"; why is this not a default? Looks
like I could just do this for Office documents?
· Pg 109: Explorer/Organize/Layout/Preview, Details, Navigation
(navigation not absolutely necessary).
· Pg 220: IE7 - Quick Tabs, and Tab View - cool stuff
"Windows Vista Step By Step"
· pg 47: stacking windows & side-by-side from the taskbar
· pg 68: "Recent Pages" = Recent Folders; upper left of Explorer
window (up to 9 entries)
· pg 73: use Views slider to move between folder content views
· pg 80: when adding tags in Properties/Details, Vista offers
suggested tags based on initial letters typed. Cool.
· Pg 93: if you set a date in Advanced Search, the date will be
retained in the next search.
· Ctrl + click: opens a link in a new tab
· Pg 319: Empty TIF When Browser is closed check box; does this one
work?
· Disk Defragmenter Schedule (does it wake for Defrag?)
· F1 Help opens 'context sensitively' per the program you have open.
· Pg 333: Lots of good help stuff in Windows Help and Support

Windows Vista >> What is the best book on Vista?
A few weeks back I sought such information here also. I
then spent a couple of hours at Borders looking through the
various suggestions. I bought "Windows Vista - The Missing
Manual" by David Pogue; ISBN 978.0.596.52827.0, $35.
I have been very pleased with it. When I have had questions
it didn't answer I returned to Borders, checked the other
books, and found they didn't have them either.
Best regards.

Keep in mind that this book was written prior to the release of Vista, which
means it was written on the basis of beta software. Personally, I found this
book to be a great reference a good year ago, but I would hesitate to
recommend it now that lots of good Vista books based on the actual release
are available.

I checked the two books you recommended above, and they were
both shown as published in December, 2006 - before the
release date of Vista - which suggests to me that they also
were written based on the beta version of Vista.
Perhaps you have 2nd or 3rd editions of the books you
recommend?
Please clarify - Thanks. :-)

That is correct. The O'Reilly book was first published in December 2006
(after the completion of Vista), and then again in 2007. The Step-by-Step
book is published by Microsoft themselves, thus being up to speed on the
final Vista release.
David Pogue explicitly states that his book, albeit a fine reference, was
written on the basis of the betas only. Afaik, his book has not been
updated.

- Windows Vista >> WMC/TV Tuner and Digital Cable Box - Scrambled SignalI am having a really hard time and I'm usually fairly good at troubleshooting
these things. I bought a new Acer Media Center with WMC and Windows Vista
installed.
My cable normally comes in through a set top box and then to the TV on a
normal cable wire, and then goes out of my cable box on either a normal wire
or component video to my TV. When I hooked up the computer, I connected the
cable box to the TV tuner card in the computer (YUAN Card) instead. On the
computer, the signal comes out garbled when I load it in WMC. On the TV, the
signal comes out fine if I move the cable over.
I can get the lower channels on the TV Tuner if I connect the cable from the
wall directly into the TV Tuner card on the computer, bypassing the set-top
box completely but I can't get the upper channels under any circumstances.
Anyone have ideas for me? I know so little about this technology that I
don't know where to start. I do have an IR transmitter of some kind as well
which might help... but again I'm not sure.
Any help appreciated.

- Windows Vista >> Vista dual boot, aborted setup loopI have a bit of a strange situation. I have Vista Business installed
as a dual boot on a partition on my machine. The dual boot works fine
between my XP and the Vista operating system.
However, this has been difficult for me to use as a developer, testing
my software on the Vista platform, and having to reboot back and forth
all the time. So I installed Virtual PC, and attempted to put Vista
on the virtual machine. When I attempted to installed Vista, it
apparently was trying to run the install on my XP operating system,
and not the virtual machine (it seems it was not the actual active
window, but it was difficult to tell).
So I aborted the install, and it rolled back my XP operating system,
which seems to still be working fine. But it has left a Windows Setup
boot option in my list of bootable OS's, and it is set to start after
only 2 seconds. It loads that, then reboots again quickly, then again
I have two seconds to change it to boot to either XP (earlier version
of Windows) or Vista. This is a pain in the you-know-what, so I am
wondering if there is a solution to this.
I downloaded the tool VistaBootPro, and if I look at the "detailed"
view, I can see the Setup option listed there (see below). But if I
go to manage the OS entries, I only see the two (earlier version, and
Vista).

Quad Core, 4 MB DDR2, EVGA MB, 750 GB SATA HD, basically a very fast
hardware setup. My primary goal is to do DVD authoring faster, I have a Sony
HDR-SR5 HandyCam HD camcorder. The old system would take up to (combined) 12
hours or more to convert and then master a DVD that was origninally shot in
the AVCHD format that Sony uses and then mastered and burned using Adobe
Premiere Elements v. 3.0. I was going to buy Vista 32 bit thinking it might
be better for this purpose, but was wondering if the XP Pro I had been using
would be as good for this purpose. Also, would staying with XP necessitate
me doing a bunch of driver upgrades that Vista might already have in it. I
really liked XP, it is just that the system was getting slower and slower
doing things I needed to do as my computing tasks increased in complexity for
the hardware I had.

- Windows Vista >> Deleted Downloads folder, D'oh!I accidently deleted my downloads folder, the shell one with the pretty icon,
while I simply created a new folder I can't get the original icon back.
BEFORE, you post about the desktop.ini file, I already tried that and it
isn't working. I even tried chaning themes along with that as one site
suggested, no dice.
I can live this of course since it works fine, but any idea on how to get
the 'special' icon back. Could I be missing something in the desktop.ini
trick?
Thanks!

- Windows Vista >> Problem with 'folder style' formattingVista Ultimate 64 bit
When I open Windows Explorer I get a double pane window with a list of
folders in both the left and
right pane. I want to keep the view very simple, and eliminate the left pane
entirely, and I don't see a way to do this? Help appreciated - IM

- Windows Vista >> 4 GB Better Than 8 GBI hade Vista 64 Ultimate running on an Intel DG965WH motherboard with 8 GB
RAM. Vista was very slow. Logitech camera showed garbled picture.
I cut visible RAM to 4095 MB in msconfig. Vista now boots at least twice as
fast,
is more responsive and the Webcam picture is superb!
Computers are fun!

- Windows Vista >> LCD softwareI have an older LCD monitor (Benq T705) and was wondering if Vista (or
another app) can be used to control the display without having to use the
monitor adjustment buttons.
Ideally, I'd like to be able to set up "profiles" for different types of use
(text, video, games) and use software to select them.
Thanks in advance.

When I go to control panel and open the Sound program, then click on the
(recording tab) the programme stops responding I then have to open Task
manager to end task. There is no problem when I click on the (Playback tab)
or the (Sounds tab), can any one tell me why this should happen
