- Windows Vista >> Email link uses 64-bit IE7Hi guys, I've set my Start menu email link to use Windows Live email
instead of Outlook. Problem is, although IE7 32-bit is default on Vista
x64, the email link brings up the 64-bit version. As I always start
surfing the net by checking my email first (habit over yeeeears!) I
always find incompatible websites using Adobe Flash which I have to
reopen in 32-bit IE7. Is there any way to change the email link to use
32-bit IE7 by default?
Any help appreciated, Rajveer.

- Windows Vista >> Vista won't boot after Service Pack 1 installationI tried installing SP1 through windows update. The system hung during the
creation of the restore point. I downloaded the full standalone SP1 installer
and everything seemed to go fine. The computer rebooted and went through a
few phases. Then it came to a black screen where it began counting files. It
sticks at file 3819/68666. I get the following error message: "!! 0x0190036
!! 3819/68666 (rasacd.sys)" I can't get past this error. If I boot into safe
mode, it hangs at "Loaded: \windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys". I tried to
boot off the Vista DVD and restore, but since my machine hung during the
creation of the restore point during Windows Update, there isn't a restore
point to go back too. Anybody have any ideas? I would really appreciate any
help. Thanks.

- Windows Vista >> mediaplayer does not play dvd diskHello, can somebody help me with this. Brand new pc and mediaplayer does not
want to play dvd a bought, normal ones. It works fine with everything else.
The dvdplayer is allright i can play my dvd with DiVXplayer or VLc player it
works fine. I get this errormessage i have to adjust my screen options etc
but that is bullshit.
I have installed codecs for vista and that works fine too...Must be an error
in the software but can not find it. And it must be a simple problem as
well.......but i do not see it...who can help me...

- Windows Vista >> msvcrt.dll problemI need members help. I'm getting a mscvrt.dll error message sometimes when
going from one website to another. The message displays, msvcrt.dll as the
file with the problem. The error message reads, Internet Explorer (using
IE7, with latest upgrade) raised unhandled exception in 3rd party module and
should close. Below that it reads, Version Info: UNICODE; v.4,0,2,21.
Below that the Call Stack display a listing of lines each beginning with
Base:75E0000,001B, etc. Some of the lines contain pound signs following by
foreign characters. Once I click on OK (the only option) IE7 simply restarts.
How do I correct this error or restore the msvcrt.dl to its default? Is
this file really needed in Windows Vista Ultimate and/or IE7? I have not
delected this file until I get expert advice or told what to do.

Every time I start or restart my computer, I have to reinstall certain
software or run certain programs to get things working properly. The
changes I have made do not stay in effect.
For example, every time I start or restart I have to re-install Flash Player
or it says it is not installed. Also I have used a program to "un-associate"
certain file types with one program and associate them with another, but
every time I start or restart the computer, they are "re-associated" with the
wrong programs so I have to re-run the "un-associate" program, then
re-install the program I want them to work with.
Why are the changes not kept when the computer shuts down? This does not
happen if the computer is hibernating or in sleep mode, only if it is
completely shut down as in a restart.
Does anyone know how to make the changes stay in effect? I am VERY
frustrated with having to reinstall this stuff everytime I need to restart
the computer.

- Windows Vista >> service pack 1: where has all the space come from?I recently installed service pack 1 from windows update. Now, when I go to C
drive properties, I have far more hard drive space than I had before. I store
a lot of layered Photoshop images on a two terrabyte internal hard drive (
drive C ).It is the usual raid stripe array and works very well. Until the
installation I had used about a 1/4 of my drive space; now it shows only
about 1/7. I defrag regularly and keep everything up to date and clean. It is
as though I had deleted a lot of my images, but as far as I can tell they are
all still there. Could it be that windows is giving me false information and
there is less hard drive space than there appears to be? Why would sp1 do
that? Is there any way I can check? I would be very grateful for any
suggestions.

- Windows Vista >> The Good, The Bad, & The UglyBeing human (and I use the term loosely) we tend to embrace the familiar and
shun the unfamiliar. Part of adopting Vista involves giving Vista a chance to
become familiar. Over the last 10 months that I've used Vista I've learned a
lot and become more accustomed to Vista. Overall, I think Vista is becoming
an appealing and highly functional system. During this same time, MSFT and
the Communities and other forums have worked a lot of the bugs out of the
system, and many third-party compatibility issues have been resolved. Vista
and I could not have made this journey together without the help of the many
contributors to the Vista Communities and other forums. Which brings me to
the first of two major downsides that I see with Vista.
The first downside is not so much a Vista problem as it is a MSFT problem.
Ideally, MSFT would provide real Support for Vista for the predicted lifetime
of the product. In reality, this is not the case. MSFT technical support of
Vista is a virtual black hole that swallows up the universe (including your
money) and everything disappears without a trace. The Help & Support that
comes with Vista, or that available online, is superficial and rarely covers
any of the serious issues encountered. Searches of the Knowledge Base are
rarely fruitful. There may be some helpful information there (mainly for
XP), but finding what you need for Vista is next to impossible. Most
third-party software companies provide better support for their freeware.
MSFT could learn a lot from Google as far as searches, and from other
third-party companies as far as support.
After youâ??re done with the superficial Help & Support and online support,
MSFT passes the buck to the Vista Communities Discussion Groups and refuses
to take responsibility for their brainchild. And when thereâ??s a Windows
Update that screws up your computer and everyoneâ??s screaming in capital
letters for help, MSFT is mute. Of course, you can always pay the big bucks
and get help with a limited problem. However, after already paying the big
bucks to buy Vista, few of us are willing to shell out more for support that
should be there, at no cost, just because we bought the product.
The second downside has to do with Security. Vista has been designed to be
as tight as a drum and impermeable to all external threats. In the process
of doing this, Vista also has many layers of protection that prevent even
Administrators having access to do what needs to be done. MSFTâ??s response to
IT terrorism has been to improve Homeland Security at the expense of our
inborn Administrator liberties. Administrators should automatically have
Ownership and Full Control of everything, should automatically have â??elevated
privilegesâ??, and should never be denied access to anything. Iâ??m OK with
confirming â??Are You Sure You Want To Do This?â??, but anything further is just
plain harassment and obstruction.
In balance, I think Vista will continue to improve over time as weaknesses
in the system are ironed out. I think the security issues will become more
manageable over time. Vista will continue to be a commercial success as more
and more businesses adopt it with improvements in compatibility. Vista will
eventually leave its mark as a true step up in digital history. It may be
wishful thinking to hope that MSFT will step up to the plate, however, I
challenge MSFT to begin providing real, free technical support for Vista. I
do believe we are safer now, under Vista, than before, but I also challenge
MSFT to help keep us secure while restoring our Administrator freedoms.

- Windows Vista >> No MP3 Ripping Option in Windows Media Player---Why??I just noticed that there is no "mp3" option in the drop down ripping
menu in WMP11, which I am running in Vista. I could swear that it was
there before, and now I have to use iTunes to rip my CD's into mp3
files. Does anyone know what might have caused the option to disappear,
and how to restore that capability? I thought it was built in to WMP11.

- Windows Vista >> Windows Mail Newsgroup Rule FiltersFor those of you who have spent a deal of time creating your kill file, and
would like to save it if you have to reinstall the O/S from scratch, or have
to roll back to a previous disk image - here's how!
Open regedit and browse to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows
Mail\Rules]
Highlight the entry and right click | Export
Give it a name you won't forget, such as "Delete These Fools"
Browse to where you want to save this file.
Now if you have reinstall the operating system from scratch you can go to
this .reg file and double click to run. The entries will be applied to your
fresh operating and the fools will continue to be blocked.

- Windows Vista >> vista safe modeHi, i'm having a problem with my window's vista home premium.
a few days ago the computer froze and i had to turn it off without first
shutting it down as i was unable to do so, and as such i restarted in safe
mode.
the thing is, now my windows task bar is no longer the standard windows task
bar, instead it remains as the safe mode task bar as well as all the windows,
which also remain as standard safe mode windows.
i was wondering how to get rid of this and get it back to normal.

say they are coming in a pop up comes up saying the POP3 server has not
responed in 60 seconds would you like to wait and even if i click wait
it dosent work if someone could please help me all my school info has
not come in because my email will not work

Windows Vista >> Vista system restore
I wanted to do a system restore back a few days when i tried i got thi
error message "the disk Local disk (C: has errors" so it say check fo
errors so i do and restart my computer it starts to check for error
then it freezes at 1% or 3% i have tried to leave it but there is n
progress for hrs. so i am thinking i have a much bigger problem tha
just a system restore. I have been looking on this forum and i hav
tried to run sfc/scannow a dos window flicked up for one sec but tha
was it, so i am not sure what it did and now it can no long find ru
sfc/scannow, next i tried to boot up and safe mode but that also froze
i can boot up in normal mode if i bypass the the disk check witch i
asks me every time i start now. i am in way over my head any help woul
be wonderful or at least a indication on what the is going on would b
great

Your hard drive is failing and most likely has bad sectors/clusters o
it. In other words, you're gonna need to either install a new har
drive yourself and reinstall Windows Vista, or take it into the shop an
pay someone else to do it for you

deleted/moved from my harddisk. Is there any way to remove the index of the
files that are deleted from the disk?

- Windows Vista >> Restoring Windows Mail MessagesBefore doing a format and reinstall of Vista Home Premium, I ran the backup
wizard to save, among other things email, and then the restore wizard after
the reinstall. The backup files and folders were transferred from the
external hard drive to a folder on my desktop called "Shortcut to System
Recovery Files". When I open Windows Mail and click on File > Import, there
appears to be no mechanism to fetch the Windows Mail settings and messages
from the System Recovery Files. How do I restore the Inbox and other folders'
messages, the account settings? Thanks for whatever help you can offer. I'm
lost in maze of strange folders and files.

Does anyone have any suggestion for me?
When I have multi tab browsing on and close one of the tabs down I get an
error message that internet explorer has stopped working.... all tabs then
close down... do you know the solution to stop this from happening? It's so
annoying and would appreciate any support!

- Windows Vista >> Photo Slide Show Screen Saver Doesn't Come OnI want to use one to use personal photographs as my screensaver. I've
directed it to the desired folder to open after 10 minutes and it doesn't
start. The pictures show just fine in the preview it just won't activate
and come on at all. I've changed it to 1 minute and nothing. Any ideas of
what the problem is? TIA

- Windows Vista >> How Do I Isolate What's Trigging DEP?I've been using the "Photos" Screen Saver for a long time. Lately it's been
closing with a little window that sez"Photos Screen Saver has stopped
working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will
close the program and notify you if a solution is available." Once I click on
"Close Program", another window pops up to tell me that Data Execution
Prevention is shutting it down.
Presumably, one or more of the items in my "Pictures" folder is triggering
DEP. I've got subfolders in there which include some movie clips and humorous
commercials.
Is there some way (other than trial and error) I can find out which file is
triggering DEP so I can move it to a folder outside of "Pictures"?

- Windows Vista >> Plugnplay & Network tray iconI downloaded AIM yesterday and since then my plugnplay does not seem to work.
My network tray icon also does not recognize the wireless network. Even
though, I am connected wireless, but the windows network shows "server
execution failed" message. I am not sure if this has anything to do with AIM,
but that is the only change which took place this issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

- Windows Vista >> Single User Locked on Resume - Vista Home PremiumFollowing a recent auto-update (Vista Home Premium) my single user (no
password) PC now wakes from sleep/hibernation with a screen saying user
locked and I have to click on the button to complete the resume.
I have been using Vista successfully for over 6 months and this only started
happening this week.
How can I switch off this behaviour back to what it was before when it
resumes direct to desktop?
There is no screensaver in user so "require password on resume" is not the
problem!

First of all i want to excuse me for my bad english!
I have been purchasing for little time, a new pc with windows vista
business, however since the beginning I have a problem.
After a while of time from when I turn on the pc, the mouse doesn't respond
to the commands anymore, I don't succeed to make copy paste, to enter in my
computer or to open other programs .
However I succeed example to use yahoo messenger or any page internet
explorer (already open) but without being able to use the right menu of the
mouse
I have made a scan with McAfee Security Sistem and has not found anything.
It's very frustrating.
Is someone able to help me?!

- Windows Vista >> Mystery Start-Up IssueHi!
I have just built a new machine (Asus MB, Intel Quad Core Processor, 2 GB
800 MHz Ram, NVIDIA 8600 GT 500 MB video, 1 TB SATA HDD) with Vista Ultimate
installed. Everything went OK with the install, except for this: The MB
came with a CD containing various drivers, launched with an autorun program.
I used the disk to install the drivers. Now, every time I boot the machine
I get a dialog box asking me to insert the (ASUS Utility) disk and press
enter. I can do that and obviously the CD will launch. If I click through,
I get the opening window of the utility program, with the same dialog box
asking me to insert the disk. I can click through once more and the screen
clears. My problem is I can't find what is causing this to happen. The
program is not being launched through the start-up list that you can view
with msconfig, it is not in the start list for any user on the machine, it
is not a scheduled task, and according to a utility program that I bought,
it is not in a "run" or "run once" area in the registry. There doesn't
appear to be anything in the BIOS that would cause this. I can find no
reference to this on the ASUS site (which is horrendous, IMHO) nor through
Google searches of the web or newsgroups. I have cross-posted this to three
different Vista groups (if this violates normal etiquette here, I apologize.
Although this doesn't impact the performance of the machine, it sure is
annoying. TIA for any thoughts out there!

- Windows Vista >> Windows Vista Common Dialogs and SharePointI have been using Windows XP Pro w/Office 2007 and SharePoint 2.0 on
an SBS system for sometime without any problems. However, I recently
migrated to a new PC running Vista, still with Office 2007, and have
been disappointed to discover that Microsoft has apparently put wedges
in the integration between the client OS and SharePoint, where it was
so seamless with XP. These issues I describe are all applicable to
the common dialog box that is displayed when opening and closing
documents:
1. If a SharePoint site (whether it's a mapped drive, UNC path, or
URL, was the most recently used location, the Common Dialog box will
not open the site the next time the dialog is displayed. Instead it
reverts to my personal documents folder on the local PC. It forces me
to renavigate back to my SharePoint site. Can't add a link to a
SharePoint site to Network Places as we all now know because of the
"invalid location" error that occurs when you try.
2. All of the Explorer functionality that was available from within a
Common Dialog (copy, move, delete, and create new files and folders,
change view settings, etc.) is no longer available when browsing a
SharePoint site. Again, I need to stop what I am doing and either
open the site in Windows Explorer or browse to it with IE, perform the
necessary task, and then return to what I had started.
3. Finally, in spite of problem #1, you can still choose a most
recently used SharePoint path from a drop-down list that appears at
the top of a Common Dialog. However, Vista throws up an error about
not being able to open the link, but if you cancel the error message
then click "Go" button next to the now displayed link, the Common
Dialog will open the specified SharePoint site. Sometimes this helps
in dealing with problem #1 but it still adds too many steps to the
process that I didn't used to have to follow.
I was very productive using SharePoint prior to Vista and found it to
be an excellent means for document storage. However, that is far from
true at this point and it makes me wonder if I need to bag SharePoint
and go back to plain old file shares or bag Vista and go back to XP.

A close friend purchased a new PC with vista with the game FreeCell. It is
different from the FreeCell she is used to in an XP PC. I have tried to
move the old free cell files from my XP PC to the vista PC to no avail.
Is there any way to obtain a copy of the old exact FreeCell that will
capable of being installed in a vista PC.

- Windows Vista >> Quickbooks 2008 and Vista-file problemsInstalled Quickbooks 08 on new pc running Vista. Have problems opening
company file. keep getting a warning box that "File specified cannot be
opened. Make sure not in use by another program or read only. Windows
error:System cannot find path specified." If you tap "OK" 20-30 times file
will open. Also problem with QB's updates. Been down the road of
uninstall-reinstall of QB, QB tech support. etc. After numerous "fixes" QB
tech support says a Vista problem. Any help?
