I am not sure I understand your question. It may be that the design of the
earphone jack is such that it does NOT detach or disconnect the speaker(s)
when the plug is inserted, and that's just how it works. Or, the jack is
bad and didn't disengage the speakers properly. You need to find out from
the operational specification or manufacturer how this was designed. All
laptops I know of will hardware disable the speaker(s) when the jack is
inserted. Poor way to cut corners otherwise.

Windows Vista >> Sound Card see this screenshot http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/3756/captureuf7.jpg

if your headphones are USB you will be seeing speakers like my screenshot
but underneath you will see your headphones
you must switch to them by rightcliking on them

is this the case?

Now...that would be a different problem. Are you sure you are plugging the
earphone plug into the earphone jack an not the microphone jack?

Windows Vista >> Sound Card if you are using normal simple earphones then something else is wrong since
it should stop the sound from the speakers automatically
