- Windows Vista >> Icons Size and Monitor ResolutionVery strange problem; I have a Dell XPS 1730; running vista ult; max
resolution is 1900 x 1200. I have hooked this laptop up to a 50" plasma
monitor resolution 1368 x 720 (or so). I can get the monitor to work by
reducing the res; but strange thing starts happening on the destop the icons
start getting bigger and bigger until 2 or 3 icon fill up the whole screen
(it kind of seems like it is cyling through big, bigger biggest). When I
reset the icons to small size they cycle up again without me touching the
computer.
Any ideas????

- Windows Vista >> Icon Check Boxes1) Question: On my desktop, all of my icons have a little check box in the
upper-right hand corner, I find this irritating and was hoping I could remove
the check boxes from the icons.

- Windows Vista >> Snipping Tool Location?Having read and noticed references to a snipping tool, I
went looking for it. Looked under tools and options in IE,
and used the help function. Lots of references telling me
how to use it, but none told me how/where to access it.
Insight appreciated.

- Windows Vista >> best / good drive imager?best / good drive imager?
I have Acronis 11 TI, but it started hanging on me yesterday under Vista.
it always hangs for 40 secs or so running standalone.
I tried Paragon Drive Backup 8.51, it imaged okay but wanted 2 hrs plus to
restore 5gb *Acribuis tajes 8 min) - I guess It's using PIO1... (did not
send them a note).
I tried rtt r-drive image and it imaged fine but I couldn't boot the damn
Linux CD even with bios sata set to IDE/disa/legacy. (sent them a note)
Tried casper but it images 1:1 and I don't have the HD capacity at the
moment (sata 160 and IDE 80) and prefer the compressed images that I can
put to DVD occasionally if I so choose (and I do)
Latest PQDI on torrent is 7 which is flagged as Vista non-compatable anyway
(I didn't try it).
I used to use ghost but a while back when I upgraded, the boot cd caused a
bluescreen because it wanted to call home on an intel NIC, so I went to
Acronis.
I keep looking around but would appreciate ideas!
tia!!!

- Windows Vista >> Problems with Windows DreamSceneVersión en español:
Hoy me ha pasado que al encender el ordenador, el vÃdeo que tenÃa de fondo
sólo aparecÃa como pixels aleatorios de colores alrededor de la pantalla. Sin
embargo, sólo me pasa con algunos vÃdeos, y no es por problema del vÃdeo, ya
que si lo abro con otra aplicación se ven correctamente.
He intentado desinstalando dreamscene y volviéndolo a instalar, pero pasa lo
mismo.
¿Se os ocurre algo más que pueda intentar?
Pd. Tengo windows Vista Ultimate 64 bits.
Gracias y un saludo
Version in English:
Today after starting the computer, the video that I had as wallpaper "had
disappeared" and I can only see random color pixels around the screen.
However, it only happens with some videos, and it isn't a video problem
because if I open it with other application I can see it correctly.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling dreamscene, but the same happens.
Do you know more things I can try?
Postscript. I have Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bits.
Thanks and Greetings.

- Windows Vista >> Variations of Aero? There are many themes for Windows XP Luna interface. Windows Vista,
however, has only one version of Aero ( we can change the color and
its intensity though). Is it possible to make other themes for Aero,
like different system button styles or different border, different
material, etc. Or, is it impossible to customize it by its
architecture? I'm not going to make a custom theme, but am just
curious about it.
PS : Personally, I like Aero better than Mac OSX's look and feel,
except for fonts and menus. I like OSX's larger fonts and translucent
menu better.

- Windows Vista >> Dvd wont play in Dvd playerOk guys, I finally am able to burn a dvd from my camcorder with DVD maker.
However, the dvd will not play in my dvd player. It's a fairly new Sony
progressive scan dvd player and says it play all types of dvd's
(R+,RW+,R-,RW-) My computer is brand new and also plays all of the above
dvd's. I was using DVD-R for my burning, it is what I use when backing up
dvd's that I own with no problems. So why is DVD maker having a problem
encoding my camcorder to dvd format? Or is there another problem that I dont
know about. I greatly appreciate all of your help.

- Windows Vista >> Vista unexpected shutdown with no restart, no apparent reasonI'm running Vista Premium on a Gateway MT6451 notebook.
My computer continues to shutdown unexpectedly for no apparent reason. It
does not restart automatically. I can restart it, usually with no problem,
but this is keeping me from accomplishing anything. I have to constantly save
files, etc to avoid losing them. Yesterday this happened about 7 times. The
frequency seems to be increasing.
This has happened when the only application I had open was Mozilla Firefox.
I've used the reliability monitor and it lists several disruptive shutdowns.
The only other symptom is my HP printer. When I move my laptop, I unplug the
printer USB. When I plug it back it, it has to completely reload drivers,
etc. I have deleted the printer from my system to see if it's the cause, but
I can't keep it that way!
I've also used the Memory Diagnostic tool, which is supposed to check memory
and restart the computer. It did not restart the computer when I ran out, so
I don't know if it actually "did" anything.
I ran Checkdisk and it reported my problems.
I've run McAfee and there are no viruses.
How do I obtain diagnostics to determine the problem and where do I find
error logs, etc? Please speak in layman's terms and pretend I'm clueless.
I don't know where to go from here. I've searched the Microsoft Knowledge
base, but found nothing that seems to apply.

- Windows Vista >> Empty holder can not be deletedI encouter from time to time situation where I can not delete file
holder. The following is the one just happened.
I downloaded a zip file on the desktop, created a holder in D: drive,
moved the zip file to it, and unzipped the zip file. In the unzipping
process a new sub-holder was automatically created and extracted files
were saved in that sub-holder.
Then, I could delete the zip file, all extracted files, but could not
delete the automatically created sub-holder.
Could anyone help me understand why and how to delete it?

- Windows Vista >> DOS Prompt HereWith Vista, in Windows Explorer, when I right click on a folder and select
'DOS Prompt Here' the DOS prompt always starts in C:\Windows\system32 not
the highlighted folder. That's using the folder list on the left side. If
I try it with a folder on the right side, it opens the DOS prompt in the
parent directory of the folder I have highlighted.
What gives?

- Windows Vista >> Power icon only for laptops/UPSWhy on earth has Microsoft taken it upon itself to remove the power
icon in Vista except for laptops and desktops with UPS systems?
I have always used the icon to quickly switch between different power
plans, so that "always-on" desktops can be put in low-power mode when
no user interaction is required.
I understand that switching off, or hibernating, would be the ideal
solution, but if the machine does work over night, that's not an
option. The power icon makes it easy to save power under this
scenario. Isn't Microsoft supposed to be promoting energy efficiency?
Not much sign of it in Vista.
Maybe they'll say "Oh, we thought people just used the power icon for
looking at the battery on laptops". It's exactly this kind of second-
guessing which is driving me insane in Microsoft software of late. The
new slogan appears to be "where do we want you to go today?" Nanny
knows best! The more I use Vista, the more useful features I find that
have been removed or disabled, presumably "for my own good".

- Windows Vista >> Will this hurt my laptop?Vista Home Premium
As a previous note stated I am having trouble waking my laptop while
sleeping.
This is a separate question. If I set the laptop to never sleep, hibernate
or anything else and just use the screen saver will this hurt the laptop? I
realize it will use extra power but will its being fully on all the time
generate significant wear & tear on the computer?

- Windows Vista >> Will Vista detect unformatted hard disk?Hi people, and thanks for all the useful info I have learned from reading
this group. I am about to buy a second hard disk for my Vista Home Premium
computer, for storing backups and a Norton Ghost image. New hard disks are
usually unformatted, and in the past I have formatted them by booting with a
floppy and using FDISK and FORMAT. My new computer has no floppy drive
though, and I am wondering whether, if I put a new unformatted disk in, will
Vista detect it and give me a chance to format it? Can anyone advise? Also,
does Norton Ghost 12 prefer a FAT or NTSC formatted disk for its images, or
will either do? Thanks.

- Windows Vista >> Copying/moving photos in VistaIs Vista really this unusable? I have large amounts of select photos that I
need to move to other folders. The problem is, in Vista I cannot see the
thumbnails to see what to move. Do I have to write down the name of every

- Windows Vista >> Shared Printer connected to an XP machineI have a HP4L connected to a XP Home machine. It is set as a Shared Printer,
and other machines on my home network can see it and print to it.
I have a Vista Home machine on the same network tht can see the XP machine,
and access the shared folders, but it can not connect to the shared printer.
When I try to connect to the HP4L, I get an error message, ACCESS DENIED. I
was thinking the error came from the XP machine -- firewall problem or the
like -- but I can't find any thing that would keep Vista out while letting
all of my other machines in -- the other machines are all XP, some XP Pro,
and some XP Home. The only machine that can not share the printer is the
Vista machine.
Do I need a printer driver on the Vista machine that works with the printer?

- Windows Vista >> Can't see Internet on wireless networkI want a second computer (which uses XP) to be able to connect to my
internet connection.
It CAN connect to the wireless network, but cannot see the internet.
I have a Netgear wireless Router, and a security enabled wireless network.
The other PC can connect to the wireless network with good strength, but
cannot see the internet.
In Vista's Network Sharing Centrethere is a properties box which deals with
Internet Connection Sharing. But when I try to tick the 'Allow other users
to connect through this computer's internet connection' box and click OK, I
get a messagebox come upo telling me that 'An error occured while internet
connection was being enabled'. Should I be trying to enable this?
Am I doing this in the right place? if so what else do I need to do to
enable the internet on the other machine? Any ideas...?
Thanks
