- Windows Vista >> No PCMCIA after installing Vista SP1Ever since installing SP1 for Vista, I can't use the PCMCIA ports on
my Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop. They were working fine with Vista until
I installed SP1.
I have a PCMCIA to USB 2.0 adapter, and a PCMCIA to CompactFlash
adapter. When they stopped working after installing SP1, I thought
maybe they were incompatible, so I went to Fry's and bought new ones
that both said they were compatible with Vista.
But I have the same problem with the new ones.
I also have a USB flash drive. It still works fine in the built-in USB
1.1 port, but no longer lights up in the USB 2.0 adapter for the
PCMCIA port. It worked fine there before installing SP1.
Device manager shows no problem at all -- nothing yellow or red.
I tried uninstalling the PCMCIA drivers and rebooting. It reinstalled
them, and they say they're working fine in Device Manager, but still
the same problem.
I tried uninstalling all USB stuff and rebooting. It reinstalled the
USB stuff, and everything still looks fine in Device Manager, but it
still didn't work.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Greg

- Windows Vista >> Vista Disk Read error after removing xp driveWell this is strange, I added a new drive for a vista install, in bios
I changed to boot order so it would become the default boot disk, then
proceeded to install and use vista. When I whated to run xp I would
shut down and change the boot order and all is well.
SO now I want to remove the xp drive all together from the machine.
when I power on, and the machine only reports 1 drive and it is the
default drive to boot from, so all ok.
but when it goes to boot, it reports disk read error. I did a boot
from the vista dvd and tried a repair but the repair program found no
errors. so I can't boot vista unless I have the xp disk installed.
any way to fix this or do I need to do a reformat/install ?
thanks

- Windows Vista >> simultaneous versions of explorer.exeHas anyone else encountered this whilst using Windows Vista Home Premium...
I noticed in the task manager on several occasions 2 versions of
'explorer.exe' running simultaneously but I have no idea how or why.
I am able however to close one of them without any incident but it's
becoming frustrating always having to do so...I just wondered if anyone knew
why this was happening or how to stop it.
I've done the usual checks for viruses and spyware but they report nothing
untoward.
many thanks in advance.

You can check on Microsoft's Vista Compatibility List
https://winqual.microsoft.com/member/softwarelogo/workswithlist.aspx
It is nowhere near complete or that accurate, but a start at least.
Most older software will work with Vista. Some need to be run in XP
SP2 mode. Generally software that don't work with Vista interact
directly with hardware like DVD burners or older scanners, so you
almost always need an upgraded version of that kind of software.
For best results check to see if your software as been upgraded,
modified to run under Vista. You may need some patch or new drivers.
I have roughly 800 different applications that run under Vista, some
going back to Windows 3.1 era. You are correct some do seem to run
slower, but they do run. Others have some minor glitches like not
reading the help files or a few features not working as they did under
XP.
Unlike the idiot Frank claiming I can't get Vista to run, it runs,
just not always as it should, mainly because of Vista flaws, not any
hardware or software from other sources. The irony is the only real
problem I have with Vista is included Vista applets or applications
like Movie Maker, Photo Gallery and Windows Explorer.

You're telling us it won't run correctly. Your words, not mine.
And of course, it's all MS's fault.
That is what you've constantly said.
Now you're denying you've ever said that when you've just now said it again?
You're dumber than door knob?
You're really and truly stupid and you blame your stupidity on everyone

Are you willing to pay someone to spend the many hours to compile this list

Liar. I keep telling you that there is a KNOWN problem with how Vista
copies/moves/deletes files. Microsoft has released a hotfix
acknowledging this is a real issue. Countless thousands of others have
reported the same issue. You keep denying it is a problem and pretend
I don't know how to install Vista having hundreds of times said I
can't get Vista to run correctly due to something I've done. That is
deliberate lying on your part.
>And of course, it's all MS's fault.
Well doofus, Microsoft wrote Vista, who else would you hold
responsible when they ADMIT it has problems?

I keep telling you that doing an in place upgrade install over XP is for
dummies...maybe like you...now either resolve your issues by doing a
clean install or live with it an STFU!

- Windows Vista >> Audio captures getting corrupted - How can I debug or fix?I'm trying to do a project which involves making long audio recordings
for later analysis. I'd been hoping to record these on my PC digitally,
so that they can be easily processed in software. However, the
recordings keep getting corrupted (I get extremely loud crackles and
pops occasionally - once or twice an hour, sometimes less frequently).
The glitches occur in all recording software that I've tried (e.g.
audacity) and also in some in-house written software (in both WDM and
DirectX versions). A debug version of the in-house software reports no
abnormal behaviour, lag or errors at the time of the corruption.
The corruption has a fairly characteristic waveform - it looks as though
a few hundred samples have simply been discarded, or sometimes, as if a
block of samples have been recorded at the wrong point in the buffer.
(Unfortunately, this is a limitation of my debug method, as I'm
recording a test tone to identify the corruption automatically).
The problem occurs identically with both on-board HD audio and a PCI
creative X-Fi, and occurs at all sample rates and bit-depths.
The problem cannot be reproduced at will - i.e. it cannot be reproduced
by deliberate high CPU load, high disk load, or high graphics load.
System specifications:
CPU: C2D E6600 (not overclocked)
Mobo: Asus P5B-Deluxe (tried multiple BIOS revisions)
RAM: 2 GB PC 6400 (thoroughly tested with Memtest86+ and Windows memory
diagnostic)
Graphics: Nvidia 8800 GTX 768 MB
Sound: On-board SoundMAX audio and Creative X-Fi Xtremegamer (multiple
driver versions, including beta)
OS: Vista Home premium 32 bit
I'm at a loss as to how to debug further, or how to fix this. Does
anyone have any bright ideas?
I've been thinking about rewriting the capture software to use Vista's
WASAPI audio system - but I'm not sure that will fix the problem (i.e.
the problem is more fundamental - e.g. it's a Vista audio mixer problem,
or it's a hardware bug) and don't want to invest a non-trivial amount of
time in a non-solution.

- Windows Vista >> Newbee question - adviseNot that I'm adverse to change, but I'm thinking of buying a new
laptop with Vista 64, after using XP Pro. I'm thinking of giving my
current laptop to my girlfriend. We're both on my home network along
with two printers.
I'm very comfortable with XP, and truely scared about the change in
OS. I've reseached the group a bit, and it sounds like the biggest
issue might be with drivers.
I think most of my other software will work, with the exception of
older Macromedia progs.
What are my options?
- not do the deal
- see if I can order mt new laptop with XP
- grin and bear it
I'm kinda lost here. I'd love to get some advice, or maybe soothing
words about Vista 64.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Best regards,
Bob

limitations in mental functioning and in skills such as communicating,

cause a poster to learn and develop more slowly than a typical poster.
Former Postal Employees with Kevin Putzke Syndrome may take longer to learn
