Vista Stop treating me like an idiot

Windows Vista5
I installed Vista onto my HP xw4100 last night. I like the graphics and most

of the features but there is one that I simply hate and I feel insulted

because of it.

You know what I'm talking about: User Account Control

On my computer I have Alcohol 120% installed, the reason for this is that a

couple of my PC games (Midtown Madness 1 & 2) are ran from old disks. So I

used Alcohol to make an image and emulate Safedisk. Everytime I want to play

any (and I mean any of my games, even ones I've made in C#), I get asked by

UAC whether or not I want it to run. I mean I clicked on it so yes I want it

to run you ^&%^&%! OS! And if I want to disable UAC (which I did) I get

another annoying message saying "UAC is not enabled! This is a security risk!"

Thank you for listening to my rant. (It's probably not the first, sory about

the expletive, I'm mad)

Alcohol. It can cause problems. Don't drive.

You can have "security" not tell you UAC is off.

Ron I think you will find alot of people have not abondoned Vista. The

reason is they are not idiots. Only people who complain about a system

without a real complaint is reviewed as an idiot. This forum is for

helping people, not telling them to move or bin an os that is good. Use

what works for you and stop telling people what os works for them.

this is not a forum, this is a newsgroup. If you are reading this from a

pulling the posts from the USENET and puting them into a forum.

Since this newsgroup is vista.general there is nothing to imply that it is

about support only. Saying vista stinks is quite ok and its true.

I guess its time for YOU to stop telling people what to say or not... ha!

Leaving aside the pedigree of the program you are trying to run and the

reality of the risk, the question UAC is asking is not " Do you

really want to do this ?", the question is " Was that you starting

this program or is some malicious software at work ?".

Re:Vista Stop treating me like an idiot

Ron, you obviously only have half a clue as to what you are

talking about. The name of this group is "microsoft public

windows vista general". Some people access that forum

directly and others such as myself, and apparently you,

access it through the usenet feed. So, depending upon how

you access it, you may see it as a 'forum' or as one of the

usenet groups.

The fact that you can not get Vista to work for you, and

therefore think others shouldn't use it, speaks poorly of

your knowledge and abilities. Others, such as yourself, that

constantly harangue people about how inadequate Vista is do

people with genuine questions, and a willingness to learn, a

dis-service. Probably 80 to 90 percent of this group is now

people like you getting into a pissing contest or feeding

poor or false information to others. As a result newbys have

a hard time finding answers to their questions among the

diatribes going on. It would be nice if the haranguers would

knock it off and offer only genuine help when they can. The

constant feed of negativities into this group is killing its

usefulness to people who have a need for it.

What's wrong loser? Can't figure out how to deal with UAC?

Oh, I forgot, you don't even use Vista...LOL!

Idiot moron!

Frank

-

Re:Vista Stop treating me like an idiot

UAC is active anytime an action which involves sytem (kernel) files is

contemplated. There are four UAC dialogue boxes - they differ by the shield

and its background color each signifying escalating threats.

Users tend to ignore one of UAC's major protection schemes - that of

"Protected Mode". Mode on is designated at lower left of IE 7. Do some leg

work regarding the modes use of virtualized folders and system files

(including the registry) when downloading via the Internet.

Turning off UAC turns off ProtectedMode.

Re:Vista Stop treating me like an idiot

I'm not a Vista basher; generally I like it a great deal. However I find

UAC so intrusive that I've turned if off and take my chances.

Even more of a problem, some of the applications that I installed when it

was turned off now don't work properly if it turn it back on.

Did you expect otherwise? If so, you need to learn how Vista works.

Re:Vista Stop treating me like an idiot

UAC has a purpose.

However, if you don't like it,

- Turn it off

- Turn off the notification warning you it isn't running.

End of issue.

Of all the things to complain about under Vista, UAC is something easily

turned off.

C.B.

Yes, I did expect it to work otherwise, and quite reasonably so, I think.

I did a great deal of research and preparation before I upgraded to Vista.

I had my Vista express upgrade disk sitting on my desk for months before I

used it. Before I installed it I made sure that all the drivers and

software for my hardware had been upgraded and Vista compatible versions of

my software was available. That is the reason my upgrade went smoothly and

I don't post here often bitching and moaning about how this or that doesn't

work.

I read as much as I could about Vista features so I wouldn't be surprised by

its differences from XP. In particular I read about UAC. The comments I

read pertained to warnings that popped up during installation of programs so

often that many users would become desensitized to them and routinely click

through them, perhaps negating some of the value of the warnings. I figured

I could put up with that.

What I didn't realize was that a UAC window would be thrown up every time

that I opened some programs. Someone here said that that should only happen

with older applications, but that isn't true. All of the applications I've

installed are the latest, supposedly Vista-compatible versions and still I

see the warnings routinely with some of them.

An OS is so complicated in its features that studying it before installation

has its limits. Sometimes you have to live with a thing for a while before

understanding it, if only partly, and discovering its good features as well

as its warts.

What "average" user would have known, for example, from studying how Vista

works before using it, that if I installed Womble MPEG Video Wizard DVD with

UAC off, that after turning UAC on all of my saved video clips and

projects - which took in total hundreds of hours to create - would disappear

from Womble's File and Projects window? Am I going to reinstall Womble with

UAC turned back on, and potentially loose access to the projects on which I

have been working for months, each projects with dozens of edits? Not a

chance.

See, your eyes are probably glazing over with boredom because my problems

aren't yours and therefore are less important to you. And maybe you are

feeling superior because you know how Vista works and I *don't.*

Perhaps you are inclined to make suggestions or offer a reassurance that

something can be done that will make everything OK. Fine, I hope to learn

something. But try to find a little humility before you toss off another

one-liner.

Re:Vista Stop treating me like an idiot

How to disable UAC prompts and retain UAC security:

Run Regedit and navigate to

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]

Change the value of ConsentPromptBehaviorAdmin from "2" to "0".
