Windows Explorer File Types

Windows Vista3
This is not really important, but it's driving me nuts.

In the Explorer, the file "Type" for Office files is always some weird short

sentence. For example, "Microsoft Office Excel Spreadsheet".

I don't begrudge Microsoft wanting to stick their name in there, but it

renders that column much less useful than necessary.

Does anyone remember how to change that?

Thanks in advance.

Don't display it at all. You already know your own Excel files.

Re:Windows Explorer File Types

Well thanks, Bob; that was really quite helpful and I appreciate your response.

However, there are many situations in which it is handy to sort by file type.
