Possible solution to SP1 not installing

Windows Vista9
I had posted previously about not being able to install SP1.

The application of the service pack failed right at the point where the

first reboot was expected.

I have completely "standard" hardware. No 3rd party drivers. A fresh install

of Vista with *no* applications

installed.

After a full day of experimentation I finally managed to get SP1 installed

by simply specifying "quiet mode".

To save a lot of typing I simply renamed the service pack to sp1.exe

then from the command prompt entered: sp1.exe /quiet

The sp finally got installed.

Because the quiet mode was specified...the machine rebooted a number of

times with no "warning"...

so if anyone tries it...just let it run and sit back and do nothing until

the entire process is complete.

NOTE: Though it worked for me...I advise anyone who does it to make sure

they have some type of backup

as it could of course entirely destroy the system.

Re:Possible solution to SP1 not installing

I have also had people contacting me with the permissions error code

80070005. On further investigation it has been found that the user has

disabled User Account Control (UAC). In the few cases that I have been

contacted regarding the 80070005 error code it was a simply matter of

enabling UAC again and then installing SP1 again.

The exact error code I had gotten was 0x800736CC .

All I could find for that error was "incorrect hash number".

Believe me I tried a lot of different ways to install SP1...

both with UAC on and with UAC off.

I even extracted the cab files first and tried it.

SP1 just plain did not install until I tried it in the /quiet mode

I have no idea why that did the trick for me...but it did.

For now I have put Vista aside...and will probably re-evaluate it again

in a few months.
