- Windows Vista >> networking between vista and xp proI am trying to figure out how to set up a network between vista & xp pro, Ive
figured out how to set up file sharing, but I want the 2 computers to be on a
network also so that I can add users of one computer to have certain
permissions to folders on the other computer. for example when you right
click a folder and go to the security settings, and click the add button
under Groups and user names, and click the locations button I want to be able
to choose the second computer as a location. Right now I have one user
account on each computer with the same user name and password, the computers
are also on the same workgroup. The computer running vista is a laptop with a
wireless connection to the router and the xp is a desktop that is wired to
the router.

- Windows Vista >> Error 15100: The resource loader failed to find MUI filehello people,
This problem is driving me nuts! I have searched and searched the net for a
solution to no avail. I'm hoping someone can help me!.
Problem: Windows Firewall stopped running, and when I try to start it, I get
"Security Center Can't Start Windows Firewall" mesg. Digging deeper into the
problem, I think I have narrowed the issue to a service precedent called "Bit
Filtering System," which fails to start.
When I try to start "Bit Filtering System," it greets me with the error mesg
in the subject line. I'm at my wits end in trying to solve this problem.
Please someone respond if you have suggestions or know of a solution. Thank
you

- Windows Vista >> How do I get control of 'MY' machine?I want to access "application data" under "All Users". It won't let me. I
am the admin but it still won't let me. McAfee ask me to access their
software under application data to delete a file and reboot to correct a
problem. I could access these kinds of files in XP (good old XP, I miss
you).
Plus, the Vista Defrag sucks, no status display so you have some idea how
much time it's going to take. So now I'm using O&O Defrag.

- Windows Vista >> Access deniedIn Windows Vista Home Premium there appeared new restrictions on some (not
all) folders, like Application Data, Desktop, Documents etc. They all seem to
have in the lower left corner a little square with a blue arrow pointing
toward 2 oâ??clock. When I try to open these folders, I get: â??Access denied.â??
When I check the security of the folders (right clicking the folder and
clicking security), I notice that the accessible folders have Gerhard
(Desktop\Gerhard) listed, whereas the non- accessible ones have Every-one.
But when I try to add in the non-accessible folder Gerhard (Desktop\Gerhard),
it says:â??The following object, Gerhard (Desktop\Gerhard), is not from a
domain listed in the Select Location dialog box and therefore not valid.
Iâ??m the only user and have administrative privileges. These restrictions did
not exist before.
How can I eliminate these restrictions?
Thanks in advance,

- Windows Vista >> How to compress one large file to multiple filesHi,
I would like to compress a file from e.g. 20 MB to several files of each
approx 5 MB, e.g. to be able to send them by email where size is restricted.
The problem is that the file itself only compresses to approx 18 MB, so I
would like to compress to several files. I believe to remember I did this for
earlier versions, but cannot seem to find this on Vista. Anyone knows how to
do this?
Highly appreciate any good suggestions! Thx

Windows Vista >> auto standby instead of auto sleep
Click the Start orb and look for the lock icon at the bottom of the menu,
right. There is an arrow icon next to that to put the system to 'standby',
also called 'sleep'
Control Panel/Power Options has a dropbox to choose 'sleep' and the time to
wait till it happens.

Hi Mark,
In addition to Mark's post, follow Step Two in this tutorial and use
the recommended settings in step 6 for Sleep.

- Windows Vista >> Ronnie Vernon to task: Advice not working: IE Tab OptionRonnie, I am very sorry. Either I am an idiot or there is something wrong

I set that option to: "Open links from other programs in:"

Before it was checked (default) "A new tab in current window"
This is the background. (I hate to quote myself and do it only under extreme

- Windows Vista >> WinExplorer giving blank frames, no contentHello, all. I've been scowering the groups and other forums for a
couple of days to try to find a solution to my problem, and at long
last I've come to put my sour news on the table for all to think
about...
I can't honestly say that my problem is related to the new SP1 on my
Vista Ultimate, but it does seemed eerily timed with my issue.
A few days ago, my Window's Explorer started freaking out... Any icons
that I create on the desktop remain "faceless", showing me only the
blank default icon. ANY window launched through the explorer process
will open only a frame, with a blank title bar, empty address and
search bars, and working minimize/close buttons, yet no content. I
see right through where the window content should be, straight into
the background behind it.
Explorer's process is CONSTANTLY stealing away all extra processing
time, rather than giving it to the system idle process. The idle
process *never* has a CPU allotment. It is constantly zero. Explorer
seems to allow other processes to open just fine, and all other
programs seem to open normally. However, any window, including all
"explore" windows, normally "open"ed windows, Control Panel, Programs
and Features window, etc etc... they're all broken. None of them open
properly.
Additionally, my ability to interact with the Start menu is seemingly
busted. When I click on a folder listed there, it changes its icon to
the little hourglass moving around on the little folder, as if it's
trying to discover the files listed therein. It *never* succeeds.
I've left my blank framed windows open all night, just to see if it
would ever finally show me anything, but to no avail.
I've thoroughly scanned my machine with every concievable program, and
I find nothing out of the ordinary, such as spyware or viruses. Every
log file that I make out of Hijack This seems completely normal to
me. All my services running are normal. All my startup entries are
normal. Everything seems normal.
One odd quirk that I noticed only moments ago: While downloading (a
World of Warcraft patch on my faster internet connection for my
brother) using the uTorrent client to obtain it, I discovered that I
can tell uTorrent to open the file's containing folder, and it will
successfully launch a window in Explorer that is fully functional. By
no other means can I seem to achieve this same behavoir out of
Explorer. When this magic uTorrent-spawned Explorer window is
running, it's process in the Task Manager stays at normal CPU
consumption, as expected, while the original explorer process
(presumably the desktop/general interface instance) continues to steal
away the clock cycles.
In order to access my files, I typically have been opening notepad via
a .txt file on my desktop, and choosing "open" and then changing the
file filter to "All files", and then I browse around and rightclick
and choose "open" (so as to actually launch the file, and not open it
in Notepad!!). This works 100%. I have no problems whatsoever with
this approach, other than its innate clunkiness.
The changes I've made in my system seem completely unrelated to this
problem, and even if I did figure out that it was somehow something
that I installed, I cannot so much as open a window to properly choose
to uninstall said program. Recently, I've installed only a trial for
a program called MorphVOX (which seems to be functioning normally... I
don't really care for it in the end, but I can't really unistall it,
given my dillemma) and I was doing some video editing in Adobe
Premiere. (One of Premiere's little byproduct files is on my desktop,
and Explorer *really* stops working entirely if I try to delete it.
Not sure what that's all about.)
Has ANYBODY experienced something similar? I've been booting into my
extra little partition for WinXP recently :) Once again, all other
fucntionality seems intact on my machine. All virus and spyware
protection seems uncompromised and running cleanly.
(sorry to be so long winded :) )
Tim
Dell Dimension 4500S, 1152mb RAM, 2GHz processor, Vista Ultimate SP1,
and a broken generic video card driver that Vista doesn't like :D
trust me--- that's completely unrelated to my problem!)

- Windows Vista >> Windows Vista - Shortcut Keys to a ShortcutPrior to Vista, when I assigned a shortcut key to a shortcut, for example to
launch Microsoft Excel, I would do CTRL + ALT + E, every time I pressed the
key combination, it would open a new instance of Microsoft Excel. It was
handy and useful to me. With Vista, I can't do that anymore, it only launches
one instance of the application and when I would use the same combination, it
brings focus back to the application that was already launched.
I understand that this is a change in Vista and in many instances it is
useful.
If you know a way to change the behaviour to pre-Vista, please share.

- Windows Vista >> Driver installation problemI've performed a new installation of Vista on my HP Pavilion DV5051EA.
Initially it worked fine... but after some weeks I've experienced a very
annoying problem when connecting new USB devices. The installation of the
drivers takes a very long time (about 20 minutes), even if the device is a
simple USB memory. If the device is more "complex" (e.g. a mobile phone), the
installation is longer, because Windows has to install multiple drivers (a
mobile phone is seen as multiple devices: usb modem, usb phone, usb obex, and
so on, and each installation takes a long time!). Sometimes the installation
of a driver fails for timeout and I can't use the device! Usually, if the
installation is successful, the next time I reconnect the device I don't have
to wait, because the drivers are already installed. But sometimes, e.g. if I
change USB port, Vista starts to install drivers again.
This problem is very annoying, especially for these reasons:
* while Vista is installing drivers, the "SYSTEM" process takes all the CPU
power, so for 20-30 minutes the PC is very very slow to use!
* even though I can use the USB devices already installed, if I have to copy
some files to my friend's USB memory that is different from mine, we have to
wait for a long time! It takes less time to burn a CD!
* I've not managed to install some devices due to the timeout error while
installing drivers, so at this moment I can't use my webcam and my Nokia
phone in PC Suite mode.
I've given Vista a chance, and at first I was happy because I like it and
apps work fine, but now this problem is making the use of my PC a real
sufference!
