- Windows Vista >> Uninstalling and Reinstalling Windows VistaI purchased Windows Vista in Feb. 2007. A couple of months ago it started
doing goofy things and Best Buy suggested that I uninstall and reinstall and
then get updates. I have backed up all my files. Question 1) After
reinstalling, which updates should I install? I saw several on the download
site. 2) Will I lose my printer hookup by doing this? Thanks.

- Windows Vista >> NewsreadersPlease, someone give me the name of a newsreader I can purchase, a
newsreader that includes a tutorial concerning the use of the newsreader,
the meanings of all the options and menu listings and the results of the
changes I make to settings.
Yes, I am an inexperienced newsreader user, a newbie. I have used
computers for 30 years but only started using a newsreader a week ago due to
the limitations of the web interface newsgroups. The help section of WLM
tells me absolutely nothing. It is a complete waste of my time. I can't find
the answers to my questions anywhere. When I continuously post my questions
to this newsgroup it is a waste of your time also.
It irritates me to come across as being a moron and it is humiliating
to say the least. Intelligence, ingenuity and common sense are of no benefit
when using the WLM newsreader. I can read a tutorial in one hour and have
all the answers to all my questions or I can use WLM's newsreader and
continue asking questions for the next year, irritating the experienced
newsreader users. The very last thing I wish to do is irritate the other
users of these newsgroups and/or waste their valuable free time.
Again, if anyone is using a newsreader that also contains a viable
tutorial or help section please give me the name of the newsreader so I can
purchase it. I don't care how much money I must spend. I am fed up with WLM
although I like it very much.
Thank you for your time and any assistance you provide. I appreciate it
very much.

- Windows Vista >> Windows Gadget & Norton Internet Securuty 2008I have been using a Windows Vista Gadget called "DC Wireless Network
Monitor" to show the status and strength of my wireless signal. It, and
other Wireless signal gadgets had been working fine until I installed
Symantec's Norton Internet Security 2008. Now, all show nothing, no signal
or disconnected. I assume NIS 2008 is somehow blocking the "Gadget" from
getting the wireless info. Any ideas or suggestion?
Thanks,

- Windows Vista >> HelpI need help with vista x64.
I installed it today and my MN-510 does not have drivers for it.
I have Vista Ultima x86 x64 on my HP laptop and the MN-510 works on it but
when I installed Vista Ultima x64 on my main system it is not supported.
I was thinking that if I installed Vista Ultima x64 it would also install
x86 at the same time like on my laptop.
How do I get it to do that.
If need be I will reinstall it if someone tells me how I am to do it so x86
and x64 are installed.
I purchased Vista x64 thinking it would install like the copy that came on
my laptop.
The laptop is HP8510 with an AMD 64 x2
My main system is a Intel Quad core x64
What gives.

- Windows Vista >> Vista does not "see" icon in VB3 executablePer the subject line.
Old VB3 prog. has icon embedded into .EXE
but Vista does not see it.
Worked fine through XP.
Not a real problem, I just used one from the presets,
but thought dev. team might like to know.
And to those of you who are considering a non-helpful
response along the lines of "why the he-- are you still using
VB3, you moron", please reconsider and just shut up.
I have my reasons (chief among them that I don't have the
time nor the inclination to try to port it as it's working perfectly
across ALL Windows platforms clear back to 3.1).

- Windows Vista >> Burning Pictures onto CDI have Windows XP and have tried unsuccessfully to transfer (burn) pictures
that I have on my computer to a disk. I keep getting a message "Windows
encountered a problem when trying to copy this folder. What would you want
windows to do?" Then I have my choices of Retry, Stop or Cancel. I have
followed the directions of going into My Computer and highlighting the file
to be sent to the CD but it does not work.
I have tired to find answers in the Help but there is nothing pertaining to
the message that I have been getting every time I try to burn pics onto the
CD.
I have read posts from others with similar problems and I follow the
directions that were given to them but I still get the same message. What am
I doing wrong?

print them then.

- Windows Vista >> Junction points and symbolic linksThis question should probably be in a developer forum, but I wasn't sure
which one.
In my program I enumerate directories (Directory.GetDirectories). If a
directory has the FileAttributes.ReparsePoint set I want to
a) identify it as a junction point or symbolic link to another directory (is
this as easy as checking the FileAttributes.Directory bit?) and
b) find out what the target directory is.
Can anyone put me on the right track (I imagine it will require a platform
invoke of some sort, but maybe I'm being pessimistic!!)
Thanks

- Windows Vista >> Defrag Risks?Since Vista normally does defragmentation in the background,
frequently, and regularly, it seems to me this increases the
risks of damage from a power failure. Obvious 1st level
solution is a UPS, but with the defrag program probably
running while we sleep, we don't hear the alarm within the
15-20 minutes typical of UPS performance. The 2nd level
solution would be a UPS with the ability to close all
running programs - especially defragmentation - and then
shut the computer down within 5 minutes or so of a power
outage.
My question: Is there such a UPS on the market? My local
sources (Staples, Office Depot) do not inspire confidence
that they even understand the question. Google searches
were similarly confusing, although that may say more about
my search skills than Google's inventory of information.
Your suggested solutions appreciated.

- Windows Vista >> Vista copying files errorsI have noticed that a lot of people are experiencing problems with Vista
copying files.
I first noticed the problem when I tried to do a backup to a USB disk and
thought it was USB related.
Now I have been looking around and I see the same kind of problems
everywhere (although some of them don't look like file problems).
I have now been testing this for a while and have found at least 10 ways to
make a Vista copy go wrong.
It is not USB, DVD, CD or whatever related, it can happen by copying a file
from one partititon to another on the same disk. The only thing that seems to
be consistent is that there has to be an actual disk write (and not just an
update to the TOC of the disk) and the amount of data must be relatively
large.
This points probably to a memory leak problem which would explain why the
error is so erratic. I have found somewhere that Vista actually uses a
compression algorithm when copying data. This may be a lead, because I can
force the error quite quickly by copying JPEG's of MP3's (files that are
already compressed).
But what is worse, I checked some backups I made and more than half of them
are corrupt ... . And I didn't get any error messages !
Even copying a file to a file server is not reliable ...
I think that a lot of issues (installation probs, program errors etc) are
actually all symptoms of the same problem.
So I would like to ask anyone who sees this and has experienced a similar
problem to post a reply plse, because this could really be a problem !!
Thanks

- Windows Vista >> Vista Speed and Resource UseI have been fairly satisfied with Vista, but it still has issues.
1. While I do have Outlook open and Google sidebar with Panda antivirus,
I have no other active applications. My Dual 3.2 Ghz processors are
constantly running at 10% and my 1 GB Ram is 65% used. I can hear the hard
disk constantly doing something, although not running all out as it would
during a backup.
What is using all of these resources and is it necessary?
2. When I reboot my workstation, Outlook often has a problem getting
started. Sometimes Outlook starts and sometimes it fails. It usually gets
going after about the third try. Sometimes it will startup, but some of the
tools don't work so I have to restart Outlook. Eventually it will install
ok and will work ok. I created a new Outlook profile to see if that would
make a difference. There was no difference.
It appears to me to be a problem with managing resources - particularly at
startup. Anyone else have similar problems / suggestions.
3. I noticed that there is a slight delay in accessing network drives.
It may be only 1/2 a second, but it is noticeable. Using the same
workstation and accessing the Windows Server 2003 Enterprise server using
Remote Desktop, running applications and accessing drives is instantaneous.
I am actually amazed at how responsive the remote access is. The difference
is night and day.
I would sure like to get back the workstation responsiveness that I am used
to. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

- Windows Vista >> XP on VistaI have Vista ultimate already installed on my laptop.
Now, there is a shrinking option available in Vista to make another
partition. By making such a partition, can I *now* install XP on my laptop

Logically, the sequence should be like loading Vista on top of XP, but I was
just wondering if this is possible...

- Windows Vista >> Update stopped working error 80070246Hi
I'm running Vista Ultimate x64 and Windows update had a load of updates
on the 13th Feb, so i ran them and didn't think anymore about it.
However, i've just ran update again and each time it comes back with
this:
Windows could not search for new updates
Error(s) found: Code 80070246
Then it states the last updates were installed 13/02/2008 at 09:50, but
when i check View Update History, i see there was an update installed
for Windows Defender - KB915597 (definition 1.27.6677.0) - on
16/02/2008.
Has this lest update messed something up or is it related to the mass
updates from 13/02/2008?

- Windows Vista >> How to take screen shot of UAC pop-up?Hello
I just installed Vista, and I need to take a screenshot of when an UAC
window pop ups, but..
- the usual PrintScreen or Alt+PrintScreen is disabled
- using Vista's Snipping Tool doesn't work either (Its window, and
hence the mouse, is no longer accessible when an UAC window is
displayed).
Is there a solution?
Thank you.

- Windows Vista >> Google sidebar vs. Windows Vista sidebarMy brother's g/f just got a new Dell Inspiron desktop computer. My brother
set up his account on it first and he was able to, what he says, switch from
the "Google sidebar to the Windows Vista sidebar". I don't have Windows
Vista, so I was unable to tell him directly how to switch this on his g/f's
account. It's on Google's sidebar and she would like the Windows Vista one.
I'm not sure if this is even possible or makes sense and I wasn't there when
he set it up, so I don't know what button he pushed to switch them and he
obviously can't remember. If anyone has any suggestions or know what he's
talking about, I'd really appreciate your help. Thanks!
