- Windows Vista >> mystery window need eradication helpThe title in the window is day, date & time but the window is blank except
for the message "navigation to the web page was cancelled" what you can
try - refresh the page ( which doesn't do anything).
The only way I can get rid of it is through task manager but it comes back.
I have bare minimum in my start up(msn messenger, antivirus) and have
cleaned up unused programs.
What would cause this and how do I remove it permanently?

- Windows Vista >> Vista stop error code 124Okay, about 2 months ago I bought a new laptop from dell. everything
worked fine for a while but about 2 weeks ago I started getting weird
blue screen errors after a software update I did, after uninstalling
the software and still having BSOD messages I decided to reformat the
drive.
after reformatting I ran into annoying BSOD error messages that kept
causing the reinstall to fail. I always deleted the partition and
created a new one and after hours talking with tech support I finally
got the OS installed....BUT
Now, the only way I can log in to windows is in safe mode...every time
I try to log in normally somtimes it will make it to the log in screen,
most of the time it doesn't, if it DOES make it to the login screen
sometimes it will actually let me login (VERY RARELY) and even then if
it does let me log in it's only for less than a minute before it
crashes to a BSOD...
I keep getting error code 0x00000124 and it's VERY VERY frustrating,
I've ran every damn diagnostic test on my machine literally at least 5
times and there are no hardware errors. The tech support person at dell
also assured me that if the tests show no errors then the hardware is
fine. so WHY is this happening.....any help would be greatly
appreciated.
**ALSO I forgot to mention however that if the BSOD occurs before it
gets to the login screen it's not a stop error 124 it's a stop error
code that looks like this
STOP: 0x0000009c (0x00000005,
0x846E49D0, 0xF2000018, 0x02000E0F)
**
If you need to know any specs about my pc just ask and I can tell you
w/e you need to know.

- Windows Vista >> DreamScene bug reportHi,
Can someone please point out where I can report bugs in Windows
Vista? Here are the details:
1) Install DreamScene
2) Set the desktop background to vid1337.mpg (the default animation
that comes with it)
3) Maximize a window
4) Either click on the "Show Desktop" icon many times fast or keep
WindowsKey+D down
5) The bug is that the background animation flickers. Whenever "Show
Desktop" is invoked the first frame of the animation displays for a
split second before the correct frame is rendered and the animation
resumes where it left off.
6) Expected behavior: the animation should resume where it left off
and not display the first frame
This is reproducible 100% of the time on my machine. It is easier
to spot if you use another video as your background where the
difference between the first frame and other frames are far more
noticeable.

- Windows Vista >> Protected Zone in VistaI wanted to post this message in the Security forum of Vista but Vista would
not help me to find my forgotten username and password; kept merely
rejecting my various entry attempts. Good security.
When my friends ask me how I am finding Vista as compared with XP, I merely
tell them that I have found no new features or functionality. There are only
more autocratic and annoying controls and Vista tries to organize things for
user without giving him the freedom to decide whether he wants his files,
folders, task bars, toolbars and what not by Vista's own idiosyncratic
ideas.
Today I found the Internet Explorer denying me access to the web-page of
Star World, a TV channel seen in Asia, when I tried to see the channel
schedule for today. Obviously, it is idiotic to bar me from a web-page which
I frequently check and should not suggest any harm to the most sensitive
nose of any security expert. There are already three other security barriers
raised by Vista, operational in my system: 1) Firewall, 2) Malware
protection and 3) Other security settings. On the top of that now comes the
Protected zone which is supposed to protect the user from malware.
Could Microsoft not have provided at least the option of excluding web-pages
listed by the User in his Favourites list, since those are pages which he
probably visits regularly? No such luck. I got so annoyed with this imposed
control that I went and unticked the box enabling this idiotic control which
has a meaning only if a child is using a computer and is trying to reach a
site by-passing parental control.
I hope the Security experts of Micorsoft put this message also on the
Security Forum, since I cannot remember the username and password assigned
to me.

- Windows Vista >> Batch file copyI have short cut to a batch file that copies files from a network server to
the local machine. It works fine on XP, but it won't work on Vista Home.
I've tried right clicking on the short cut and saying "Run as Administrator"
and that doesn't work either. When I open a DOS prompt window and type the
copy command there, I get an "Access Denied" error. So I'm guessing the
batch file is executing properly, it's just failing on all the copy commands.
I CAN manually drag and drop the files from the server to the local machine
- I just want a way to do it automatically through a batch file.
I don't normally use Vista, so I may be missing something fairly basic here.
Sorry, if that's the case.

- Windows Vista >> Failure w/ Vista laptop using Remote Desktop Connection To XP compI am trying to configure my laptop to be able to work on an office computer.
I was able to do this with my home desktop without a problem because both of
those computers were using Windows XP.
I have installed the VPN on the Vista laptop & I can connect without a
problem. However, when I lauch Remote Desktop Connection and I log in I get
the following error message:
"The remote desktop cannot verify the identity of the computer you want to
connect to. This problem can occur if: 1. The remote comkputere is running
a version of windows that is earlier than Windows Vista. 2. The Remote
computer is configured to support only the RDP security layer."
Does this mean that it is IMPOSSIBLE for a Vista computer to do a remote
connection to an XP Computer?

normally until last week. Now the icon has disappeared off the Computer page,

I see in stores have Intel or AMD 64 bit processors, however, the OS and of
course all apps are only 32 bit. These laptops also only have 1-2 GB RAM.
Is there really any point in buying a 64 bit machine if all it's running is

bit processors?

How can I make Vista to switch from PS/2 to USB mouse?

I don't see a problem, just as long as you own an additional license for
Vista Ultimate to upgrade the Vista Home Premium installation.

You would be OK re-using your upgrade to Ultimate (as long as you un-install
it from your other machine first.) You will probably have to activate by
phone.
However, you can't use the Vista Home Premium from the new laptop on the old
laptop. First, laptops almost always use OEM SLP licenses, which are tied to
specific hardware on the laptop. They are not transferable to other
hardware. Second, if your Ultimate license is an upgrade (not full version),
it needs to be installed on top of a qualifying version of Windows. The
original Home Premium license on the new laptop becomes part of the Ultimate
Upgrade. You can't re-use the Home Premium license.

it is not the MS intend to make your life miserable.

No, its the license that determines what can be installed, not the physical
media. The only different here is that your media is an upgrade, the thing
to take into consideration too is that you have a qualifying version of
Windows Vista already installed. Its not the amount of times you have used
the physical media.

Are you Mick one of the glorious Ubuntu crowd? Sort of a monolithic gang
aren't you? Working in tandem, giving people deliberately erroneous advice
and badmouthing people who advise them in good faith? Are you a Sub-Saharan
too or you are more of a native, West Coast liberal brand, sort of a
homegrown commie, a hater of capitalism which provides you with everything
from cradle to grave?
Are you one of the contributors to this remarkable website?
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1
I want to warn other posters who want to try it to wash their hands after
clicking and run their antivirus without delay. It is also something people
with some sense of English language and its abusers may find not really
enjoyable but perhaps interesting.

No, there are three problems with putting Home Premium on the old
computer:
1. You couldn't literally downgrade from Ultimate to Home Premium
since downgrades are never supported. You would have to do a clean
installation.
2. The EULA for the copy of Vista that will come with your new
computer prohibits this. The copy of Vista Home Premium that comes
with your laptop is an OEM version, and OEM versions are permanently
tied by the EULA to the computer they come with. They can never
legally be sold or given away without the computer, or transferred to
another computer.
3. Most computers these days that come with preinstalled Windows have
their copy of Windows BIOS-locked to the particular computer. You
won't be able to use it on any other computer.

Your new computer should have the same programs that you are transferring
settings over for. If you do not have Office on the new compter, what good
does transfering office settings do? Transfer moves files and program
settings, but does not reinstall programs on your new computer. Install
your programs first then transfer over settings for that program.

- Windows Vista >> Windows Explorer will NOT add tags to JPEGsI am using Vista Home Premium
I used to be able to add meta-data in the way of "tags" to jpeg files. But
now, Windows Explorer cannot seem to get the job done. It will let me go
through the process, but when it comes time to Save my changes, I get "Error
# 0x88982F50 No error description available".
Microsoft Photo Gallery will accept new/change tags on jpegs, but those
changes do NOT show up in Windows Explorer.
In what may be a related problem, Microsoft Photo Gallery will allow me to
edit photos (crop for size, adjust color, contrast, etc.), but is unable to
then Save the file.
Any help, info, tips are gratefully accepted.

- Windows Vista >> Unable to map network drives. We have a mixed environment on a flat network. 18 Linux Servers, 22 Windows
servers an AS400. We are not running Domain Services only workgroups. I have
250 Windows PC's running varoius versions some Running Windows 95, some
Windows 98. Most however have been upgraded to Windows XP. All are connecting
to network shares with no issues. I have a Vista Business Machine that will
not connect to Windows network shares nor Samba Shares no matter what I try.
It is a member of the same workgroup as the rest, I have removed all security
software, turned off Windows Firewall, Set Local security policy Network
Security Lan Manager Authentication level to Send LM and NTLM - use NTLMv2
session security if negotiated, NETBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled. Not sure why
this machine won't map out. Any relevant suggestions??

- Windows Vista >> Using Japanese IMEHey,
I'm using Home Premium and I wanted to change the language imput method
to Japanese. I've been to the keyboard and Languages section and added
the Japanese keyboard layout, but when I select that layout and start
typing, it still outputs in English.
I understand you can't install additional IME's onto this edition of
Vista, but I shouldn't need to do that unless I wanted to change the
whole language of the OS to Japanese - I simply want to type in
Japanese output (preferably with the choice between Hiragana and
Katakana). Is this possible with an English version of the OS or am I
wrong about the additional languages thing?
Thanks!

- Windows Vista >> high cpu usage, youtube videos won't buffer all the way,i have a hp pc with over 2 gigs of memory and had a best buy tech support
check the hardware, which was fine, so they said it is a software problem.
The problems i 've been having are youtube videos or any type of videos that
buffer will only play for 20-35 seconds. Instant messenger will not work, it
will sign off after each message is sent. Any website that requires loading
such as paypal to go to another screen locks up, and the cpu usage is
extremely high. I have reinstalled windows several times from the hard disk
and from the recovery ones I had made at best buy. I have tried contacting
hp cuz my pc is still under warranty but they seem to have forgot about me.
The tech at best buy said to do a "destructive restore" cuz the regular
restore doesn't completely wipe it out. How do i do a destructive or is
there a better solution to the problem thanks for any help
