System Recovery Disks

Windows Vista3
I just received a new computer for Christmas. It has Vista Home Premium on

it and when I started it up it ask me to make recovery disks. I put CD R/W

in and it keeps telling me that disk is not empty and will not proceed. I

know the CD's are empty because I just bought them. What kind of CD's do I

need to make these OS recovery disks with. I also have CD-R, but haven't

had a chance to try them. Thanks in advance for any advice/info offered.

Re:System Recovery Disks

Are you sure it is not asking for DVDs?

Re:System Recovery Disks

Thats what I was thinking too, since most recovery software weighs in the

GBs.

Re:System Recovery Disks

Phyllis.

Check your manual and/or contact the computer manufacturer.

That is not a feature of Windows but is instead a feature set up by

the computer manufacturer and different manufacturers may do it

differently.

My guess is you need DVDs, not CDs.

But check for the specific requirements.

Whatever the requirements, I suggest you make them soon.

Re:System Recovery Disks

Well, it said that it would take 12-15 CD's to make the disks. It would

probably do better with DVD but I had these CD's and thought I would use

them. If I were to use DVD, what kind would I need. Thanks

Re:System Recovery Disks

Depends on what format your drive uses, I would buy DVD-Rs, but buy a couple

DVD+Rs just in case.

Re:System Recovery Disks

My machine gives me the option of either 14 CDs or 1 DVD.

But the create disk tool won't do CD-RW or DVD-RW, only CD-R or DVD +/-R

I usually start with re-recordable, then if it goes

pear shaped, it's not a coaster, and I can try again.

If it works then a simple copy to a more

permanent media from the RW is simplest.

It really depends on what you DVD-ROM drive will support. I use DVD+

unformated dvd's without any problems, and they are usually compatibl

with just about everything.
