Your so-called list is irrelevant. Very few of those questions were even

actual problems with Vista. Most of them were nothing more than whining.

So, do you personally have problems using Vista? Ask an honest question and

you'll probably get a real answer.

If all you are here to do is whine and complain and insult everyone, then

you're nothing more than a troll, starting arguments with idiotic comments

that's Vista. So, crawl back under that bridge with the rest of the trolls.

How can I go back to XP?

Depending on the version of Vista you have you may have downgrade rights to

replace you copy of Vista with Windows XP. Basically if you have a Full

Packaged Product (FPP) you may downgrade using media that you source. OEM

licensing differs in general Rights to OEM versions of systems software are

granted in the OEM License Terms. The OEM License Terms for most OEM

versions of systems software do not grant downgrade rights. The exception is

the OEM License Terms for the Windows® XP Professional operating system and

the Windows VistaT Business and Windows Vista Ultimate operating systems,

which grant downgrade rights. See the full text of the OEM License Terms for

the specific downgrade rights.

Quote
Can I get a Refund?

Only if you return the unused product due to your inability to adhere to the

End User License Agreement - this is usually on the package product.

Obviously for OEM as this is supplied with a device then you must contact

the OEM for details of their returns policy.

See your laptop vendors website for these drivers. Most modern laptop

vendors still carry XP drivers

Quote
Why is nothing working?

Please be specific

Quote
How to dual Boot with XP?

Install XP then install Vista (not as an upgrade) - use a search engine to

do some research as this is well documented how to setup a dual boot system.

Quote
How to duEl boot with XP?

See above and would you like to also know how to spell check your posts ?

Quote
Why is my hard drive thrashing day and night? THIS IS DRIVING ME NUTS!

You have some software that is causing this. Vista will index your drive

(this can be disabled if you wish). Also there is a scheduled (once per

week by default that you can change) job that defragments the file system.

Beyond that Vista will cause very little continuous disk activity - so look

to your other installed software for a resolution.

Quote
Why cant search find my x-y-z- file? I thought this search was better!

Are you using it correctly? is the file/folder/volume indexed ? are you

trying to find content within a file type that the indexing engine does not

have a filter for? - please be more specific.

Quote
How can I turn on the visual part of the defragmenter?

You can't there is not one in the built in tool. If you want to see pretty

(and pointless) graphics during a background defrag then buy a third party

tool. NOTE most modern tools also are silent and invisible in normal use.

Quote
You say there is>none??? WHY????

It serves no purpose and is meaningless. It also consume unnecessary

resources and disk defragmentation should be background task that you do not

watch - it just happens. Verbose reporting of before and after defrag

statistics are printed if you wish.

Do you have nothing better to do then sit in front of a screen watching

colored lines or blocks move around? Either do some other work on your PC

or get a life.

Quote
My hard drive is almost full, why???

Because you have stored so much "stuff" on it. Vista will occupy up to a

couple of GBs on install - pretty much everything else is up to you as you

install applications and store data. Obviously if you use the system

restore function this will take up more space (you can turn this off if you

want), as does indexing (again user may disable)

Quote
Why did vista eat up so much space on my hard drive?

see above. The initial install is bigger then XP as Vista has more

components and greater functionality then XP.

NOTE: hard drive costs are extremely low - why not invest in a new drive or

add another for storing all your data on?

Quote
How can I configure shadow copy and restore points separately?

Because they use they use same technologies and are effectively two sides of

the same coin

see

Previous versions of files: frequently asked questions - in the Help system

Quote
Why does vista have only a few restore points?

As opposed to what ? You have system restore points and file shadow copy

for previous versions - as explained above they are really the same

technology exposed in slightly different ways.

Quote
Why do my restore points vanish when I dual boot with XP?

See support.microsoft.com/kb/926185" >support.microsoft.com/kb/926185 for a full explanation and

workaround

Quote
Why doesn't HOME PREMIUM have a FAX????

Design decision - either use Ultimate or a business edition or purchase a

third party product.

Quote
Where is the frikin UP button????

"UP" what ? If you mean in explorer to move to a folder above - this has

been replaced by either the back button to return you to your previous

location or the UI in in the address bar at the top with the>between the

folders which provides a richer navigation paradigm that enable you to go

"UP" but also across in one click etc.

Quote
Why did MS take 5 years to make this piece of crap?

"crap" is a subjective opinion. The development time for Vista was longer

then anticipated as the number of new features and changes across the board

from the kernel to the UI was extensive.

Quote
Doesn't ANYTHING work with Vista?

Yes. Again a subjective question. on all of my Vista systems plus the

thousands I have deployed for my clients everything works.

Quote
Why is vista so slllooowwwwww????

Maybe your hardware is not up to spec ? maybe you have software on your

machine that is slowing it down, maybe you have a poorly configured system

or are not using the correct drivers - there are a number of factors that

influence the apparent speed of a PC and many are within your control.

Personally I have no speed issues with my Vista systems.

Quote
I have 1 gig of ram, vista is still slow, if I add one more will it be

better?

Adding more memory will potentially improve system and application

performance

Quote
Where can I find a compatible driver for vista?

At the hardware vendors web site.Driver production is up to the hardware

manufacturers to do - see them first for the latest. (Windows Update will

also provide some updated drivers, but best go to the vendor first)

Quote
What does this bluescreen mean?

Use an Internet search engine to enter the details to help you trouble shoot

this. Or if you rare OEM user of Vista then contact your OEM for support.

You may also contact Microsoft for support if you are full packaged product

user. (contact details on the Microsoft web site)

Quote
I have 4 gigs of ram, 3 are visible by the system BUT vista is still

You are using a 32-bit operating system system. Due to limitations in the

you will not see the full 4GB. This is documented

support.microsoft.com/kb/946003/en-us" >support.microsoft.com/kb/946003/en-us

Quote
if I add a flashdrive for

readyboost will it be a little faster?

Possible - if you understand the way ReadyBoost works and you fit the usage

not make the OS faster it is about improving access time to applications and

data files used by those applications

This is a UI enhancement to ensure you see the name of the folder you are in

and the close by ones for reference.

Hello mr home alone.

I said that this is a list "Some of the question I have heard again and

again"

YES heard in here and out in the real world. You cant get more relevant than

that.

And there you sit, with a limited number of computers and experience, and

you

have the nerve to tell me that I am irrelevant??

No home dweller, I gain by helping others with their vista problems since it

is one of the services I provide. I need no help, vista problems are but a

small fun puzzle to me. But to others its a dreaded experience they hate.

Quote
So, do you personally have problems using Vista? Ask an honest question

and you'll probably get a real answer.

Now go crawl into your home.again, and sit there with your single computer,

take a microphone,

and start singing your love song to vista.. because that's what you will

ever know.

Quote
If all you are here to do is whine and complain

It seems to me like YOU are whining and complaining. I see no reason why I

cannot create a list with common things people say. Or do you want to

conceal the truth hoping it will just go away?

It will not go away... the more people fight to try to make Vista look good,

the more need for the truth to come out. And its happening everyday.

If I insult you, well you probably deserve it. People who know themselves

cannot be insulted.

Quote
crawl back under that bridge with the rest of the trolls.

Please look in the mirror and repeat that, while you are: Home.Alone.Again.

Re:My list applies even after SP1

Mike I know the answers to all those questions, I would take the time to

reply to yours because you have many inaccuracies, errors, and bad judgment

in there, but to be frank (no not Frank) you bore me to death!.. The

undeniable fact is that they exist in the first place, and means something

significant.

I am not a fool, and probably know Vista in better depth than you. But I

also care about the simple users... I am merely echoing their frustration.

Not mine. I am a master of computers. Have been using them for the last 25

years, and love challenges and new stuff....

But I also understand the needs of the people, the simple users. I have

understood this because I have taught computers to a large variety of people

and I understand how they thing and what they want.

You must be living on Mars if you have not understood yet that vista has

been a tremendous disappointment and something that millions avoid.

Re:My list applies even after SP1

I have replied better to these questions over a period of more than 16

months in here...

I always give the best replies... and the ones he gave are that of an MS

fanboy.. lol

Don't get me wrong. I love MS products (with the exception of Vista that

gives me the creeps),

but I have the ability to see the larger picture, and I am not attached to a

single way of thinking.

This Mike guy is just repeating stuff that Microsoft postulates. He is

probably an MVP or someone who works for MS.

You know they all talk the same.. like preprogrammed drones.

They all talk the same., think the same, repeat what they are told, and have

no imagination, no flexibility, no deep understanding, no inspiration, no

originality, no compassion, no empathy.

Mike seems to me, dry, like a machine. Like a Microsoft BORG.

Mike I know the answers to all those questions, I would take the time to

reply to yours because you have many inaccuracies, errors, and bad

judgment in there, but to be frank (no not Frank) you bore me to death!..

The undeniable fact is that they exist in the first place, and means

something significant.

The list of poorly formed questions you listed does not represent anything

really significant. You seem to be unable to accept the fact that a few

posts to a number of news groups does not warrant this pseudo outrage you

seem to express about Windows Vista. The true is simply that the vast

majority of users of Vista do not experience any significant issues. The

reason for this statement is that you cannot look at this and the other

support forums as the entire representative set of Vista users. To all

intents and purposes you are looking at the ER of a hospital and from this

all you can actually say is that there are some injured people (cause

however by their own fault or the fault of others etc) - but the vast

majority of those outside that ER or the hospital are fine and well. Such

as it is with looking at newsgroups and forums and trying to draw some

conclusion from it that a product is damaged or deficient in some way.

Given the millions of deployed copies of Vista out there and even allowing

for a number that may be for every unique post here there are 10 or 20

people who do not post the total number of those with notifiable problems

and those without renders those with problems statically insignificant.

That is not to say that genuine problems are not addressed by Microsoft or

that they are not taken seriously (as they are) but really holding up a

list of a few dozen questions does not support any case for a serious issue

with Windows Vista.

Quote
I am not a fool, and probably know Vista in better depth than you. But I

also care about the simple users... I am merely echoing their frustration.

Not mine. I am a master of computers. Have been using them for the last

25 years, and love challenges and new stuff....

But I also understand the needs of the people, the simple users. I have

understood this because I have taught computers to a large variety of

people and I understand how they thing and what they want.

And I have been in this industry a good number of years too and have not

only taught/presented to many hundreds but have actively deployed thousands

of seats with Microsoft operating systems and large scale solutions based on

Microsoft products to organizations of hundreds of thousands of users, prior

to and as a Microsoft employee (I'm not hard to find on Google) and as

lately as none MSFT.

Quote
You must be living on Mars if you have not understood yet that vista has

been a tremendous disappointment and something that millions avoid.

Sorry but the numbers of deployed users do not echo your opinions as I

continue to engage with customers deploying or about to deploy hundreds and

thousands of new Vista seats, and the consumer space continues to buy PCs

with Vista on at a steady rate.

As regards your comments on other replies on this thread I would suggest

your petty sniping and name calling hardly give you any credibility. Also

if a company as you put it is staffed by "drones" that all "... all talk the

same., think the same, repeat what they are told, and have no imagination,

no flexibility, no deep understanding, no inspiration, no originality, no

compassion, no empathy ..." how have they managed to produce such a raft of

market leading and award winning products that dominate the market place and

even you confess to loving ( from your other post on this thread - "...Don't

get me wrong. I love MS products ...") ?

Re:My list applies even after SP1

Those questions were not asked by me numbskull, rather they were posted here

again and again by other people, take a look at today's questions MR. DORK,

you will see some of the same questions being repeated by other people.. lol

I tell you the list is CLASSIC.. dah....

But I do have a specific question but not about vista, sine you seem to know

everything. Vista is child's play for me. The questions I ask involve far

more fundamental things.

How did the universe emerge out of nothingness, since the big bang theory

says that suddenly out of nowhere a singularity infinitely small, "exploded"

creating both space and time and releasing vast amounts of energy.

WHY???

I have read some theories about this... membranes colliding.. etc etc.. but

then another question arises, how did THEY come into existence.

Hello mr home alone.

I said that this is a list "Some of the question I have heard again and

YES heard in here and out in the real world. You cant get more relevant

than that.

And there you sit, with a limited number of computers and experience, and

you

have the nerve to tell me that I am irrelevant??

No home dweller, I gain by helping others with their vista problems since

it is one of the services I provide. I need no help, vista problems are

but a small fun puzzle to me. But to others its a dreaded experience they

hate.

>So, do you personally have problems using Vista? Ask an honest question

Now go crawl into your home.again, and sit there with your single

computer, take a microphone,

and start singing your love song to vista.. because that's what you will

ever know.

>If all you are here to do is whine and complain

It seems to me like YOU are whining and complaining. I see no reason why I

cannot create a list with common things people say. Or do you want to

conceal the truth hoping it will just go away?

It will not go away... the more people fight to try to make Vista look

good, the more need for the truth to come out. And its happening everyday.

If I insult you, well you probably deserve it. People who know themselves

cannot be insulted.

My wife said you're hilarious! Keep up the good work. You might get a call

As I already stated, your so-called list of questions about Vista includes

idiotic newbie FAQ ramblings, just to add more items to the list. As far as

helping others, it's difficult to help people that killfile you for your

incessant anti-vista trolling.

So, a troll thinks being retired is a bad thing? Big fat hairy deal! :-p

-

Re:My list applies even after SP1

Of course I am funny.. I am never dead serious... I mean how can we all keep

a straight face not chuckling when the main subject of this news group is..

h he heee VISTA???

I have a silly dream. Let me tell you what it is. That an OS should be

almost foolproof, and easy for all kinds of people to use.

Including:

Children are not fortunate enough to ever see a computer in their lives

(third world countries)

Elderly people who are alone and would benefit from the interaction the WEB

creates, yet have never used a computer before.

Sick people and disabled people, people who cant see very well, have bad eye

hand coordination, have no hands, and have bad memory.

I have a dream that EVERYONE on EARTH deserves the knowledge and

opportunities that the internet now and in the future will provide.

The internet is not only for Geeks, it is what I call the NEW LEVEL OF

CONSCIOUSNESS that technology has helped human kind achieve

and this will only get better and better... if you have any idea of where we

are headed.

This is a universal BRAIN with all the knowledge of humanity, and everyone

has the right to access it!

I am a visionary, I can see the future clear as if it was written on paper.

And I know where we have to go. But Vista is not leading us towards that

direction.

Vista is has so CRAP design that its far far away from that goal...

People have called me a troll before.. im fed up with that... the only

reason I bash vista, is because I care about the people using it.

And I mean ALL the people that are potentially users in the future too...

the children the elderly, the "not so smart", the "not so rich" and the sick

too.

Gesh I could think of at least 1000 things to make vista better... far

better...

My wife said you're hilarious! Keep up the good work. You might get a call

from Comedy Central soon. LOL

As I already stated, your so-called list of questions about Vista includes

idiotic newbie FAQ ramblings, just to add more items to the list. As far

as helping others, it's difficult to help people that killfile you for

your incessant anti-vista trolling.

So, a troll thinks being retired is a bad thing? Big fat hairy deal! :-p

Of course I am funny.. I am never dead serious... I mean how can we all

keep a straight face not chuckling when the main subject of this news

group is..

h he heee VISTA???

I have a silly dream. Let me tell you what it is. That an OS should be

almost foolproof, and easy for all kinds of people to use.

Including:

Children are not fortunate enough to ever see a computer in their lives

(third world countries) Elderly people who are alone and would benefit

from the interaction the WEB creates, yet have never used a computer

before. Sick people and disabled people, people who cant see very well,

have bad eye hand coordination, have no hands, and have bad memory.

I have a dream that EVERYONE on EARTH deserves the knowledge and

opportunities that the internet now and in the future will provide. The

internet is not only for Geeks, it is what I call the NEW LEVEL OF

CONSCIOUSNESS that technology has helped human kind achieve and this

will only get better and better... if you have any idea of where we are

headed.

This is a universal BRAIN with all the knowledge of humanity, and

everyone

has the right to access it!

I am a visionary, I can see the future clear as if it was written on

paper.

And I know where we have to go. But Vista is not leading us towards

that

direction.

Vista is has so CRAP design that its far far away from that goal...

People have called me a troll before.. im fed up with that... the only

reason I bash vista, is because I care about the people using it.

And I mean ALL the people that are potentially users in the future

too...

the children the elderly, the "not so smart", the "not so rich" and the

sick

too.

Gesh I could think of at least 1000 things to make vista better... far

better...

Those are some pretty lofty goals you have there, On The Bridge. An I

agree fully with what you'd like to see computers to be - 100%

accessible by everyone, regardless of age or levels of knowledge.

I do not, however, agree with your assessment that Vista is so bad that

it is a step backwards.

*Speech Recognition*

This surely helps the disabled who cannot use regular input devices.

*Accessibility*

Those options have been in XP since the start, and have indeed improved

a great deal in Vista.

*Media Center*

Windows XP Media Center was never commercially available, unless

purchased as part of a complete computer. Does the inclusion of MC not

improve upon the appeal of computers in general by making people aware

that computers can be used by more than just the stereotype "Geeks"?

*Media Player*

The new visual representations of media libraries surely makes finding

and playing favorite songs that much easier?

*Photo Gallery*

Photo Gallery provides a tool for many "non-geek" people to use their

computers for family photos, allowing them to use it in ways that was

previously not possible.

*Movie Maker / DVD Maker*

Video Editing was an extremely niche use for computers in the past.

Many people make home movies when they go on vacation, or at their

daughters weddings, or the birth of their first grandchild. But those

memories are usually relegated to a box in a closet somewhere, for the

next time family comes to visit. Now, with Movie Maker and DVD Maker,

it's easier than ever for people to preserve their memories and to make

copies that they can send to friends.

*Search*

You cannot deny that the new search facilities in Windows Vista are

second to none. Surely it cannot be any easier to find a file you are

looking for?

*Games*

How many competing operating systems out there have kids games bundled

in out of the box, including the ability for parents to moderate how and

when their children can use the computer, and what they are allowed to

to.

I agree that nearly all the new features of Vista can be made available

to other operating systems (XP included) with the use of third-party

utilities, such as Cyberlink Power Cinema, ACDSee, Premiere Elements,

Google Desktop Search (yuck), etc.

But in line with your dream of computers being more accessible to

"lesser mortals" - how many users out there actually have enough

knowledge to know that those utilities exist, or even where to go to

find them?

Vista does make computers more accessible for a larger audience, or at

the very least, is a step in the right direction.

If you want a toy OS, then look towards Mac OS, or even Linux. What

features in those dummy operating systems make it easier for ALL users,

regardless of age, knowledge or abilities.

Not true.. media center 2005 was available as a seperate package\\

and I QUOTE:

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 ("Symphony", Nov 2004) is the first

edition of MCE available to non-Tier 1 system builders. Among other things

it includes support for Media Center Extenders, and CD/DVD-Video burning

support.
