NTBackup.exe (from Windows XP)

Windows Vista16
Windows Vista Home Premium.

I have found a couple of articles on how to use NTBackup on Vista and

have been successful in doing Full backups on specified folders.

However, Differential backups don't seem to work. I need to perform

both types on a user's new Vista laptop. Upon installing NTBackup on

the user's laptop, I did a Full backup on selected folders. As a

test, I then attempted a Differential backup on the same folders.

What I obtained was another Full backup. Is this a known issue with

NTBackup on Vista? I would hazard a guess that the "Backup" file

attribute flag is not being reset upon performing a Full backup.

Thanks!

Re:NTBackup.exe (from Windows XP)

You really should not use NTBackup at all. Use the Backup included with Vista

or a third party utility instead. Most of the NTbackup articles are

instructions for transferring XP backups to the vista computer, not to use

them for future bu's. I bet if you tried to restore any of those backups,

they would fail.

Re:NTBackup.exe (from Windows XP)

Mary, why would a transferred XP backup (presumably using NTBackup's

restore) work on Vista using NTBackup and a newly created NTBackup

backup not restore?

Re:NTBackup.exe (from Windows XP)

Installing Ntbackup on Vista was intended only so that data could be

recovered from XP backups. Microsoft has issued a tool

www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx >www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx

to avoid the need to install Ntbackup.

Ntbackup is unlikely to work successfully on Vista because it knows nothing

about any detailed changes to the NTFS file system and in particular has no

knowledge of the Vista system structure.

If you want to backup your files in Vista, use the backup in your Vista

version or get a third-party backup program which is written for Vista.

It does work with Vista. However I don't use it to back up my system. I DO

use it retrieve archives made under XP.

Use Acronis True Image. Image backups, file and folder backups.

haven't been at a Vista machine since my original test, so I haven't

Re:NTBackup.exe (from Windows XP)

I was able to do some more testing on a Vista machine today. I have

determined that NTBackup Differential backups do, indeed, work.

The native Vista backup application does not meet our needs. We need

to do full and differential backups on selected folders. Thus the

need to use NTBackup.
