- Windows Vista >> Unable to format DVD-R after burning several DVDsI am back up-ing a huge data (around 100GB) to DVD.
After burning 4-5 DVDs, Vista keeps on prompting <Unable to format DVD> error.
I finally fed up and restarted Vista and retry again. This time it gives no
problem,..
until I burn 4-5 DVDs ....
Is this the problem with Vista or with my DVD writer?

purchased 1 year ago (running Vista), and had this isue, but being a computer
novice, always assumed it was something I was doing. However, just bought my
spouse a new Acer (again, running Vista) and having the same issue on that
one, so I decided to do some research. It has to be a Vista issue since it is
occurring on 3 different computers being used by 3 different people. I could
not find a response to Island Momma's request for help.
Pleeeeease, if someone out there has a solution for this, can you post and
help us out.

I'm beginning to hate Vista, with all it's inbuilt in quirks. Anybod

- Windows Vista >> Vista Won't Sleep and successfully resume.Hi,
I am running Windows Vista Home Premium on a slightly older machine with
2.66ghz Pentium 4 and 2gb ram and can not get Vista to sleep. If I select
sleep from the power options on start menu, or press the sleep button on my
keyboard the machine will power down as if entering sleep mode, but it will
then very quickly restart, however the desktop won't load. The screen stays
blank and the only option left is to press the reset button located on the
tower.
However when I hit the reset button the machine does not simply reset every
time. On occassions it will, but on other occasions it will resume Windows
from the sleep state earlier requested. But the desktop will still not load.
My monitor stays totall blank.
I have tried the obvious potential solutions including disabling the ability
of my mouse and keyboard to resume the computer from sleep mode, in the
anticipation that I would simply use the power button. I have also disabled
the ability of the ethernet port to wake the computer from sleep mode when I
thought it possible that my ADSL connection was waking the machine. I have
also updated my graphics port drivers too.
Could this be a hardware issue or does it sound like something which is
related to Windows, and if so does anyone know if MS is planning to issue
any patch or any fix in a future Service Pack for Vista?
Cheers,
Bradley

- Windows Vista >> Ethereal: Vista on my Dell vs Leopard on my MacBookFYI
I just install Ethereal (very popular packet sniffer) into Leopard on my new
MacBook.
It takes about 2.5 minutes to install Ethereal in Vista, it takes about 3.5
hours in Leopard if you have complete and accurate install info; I could not
get such info, so it took considerably more time.
The following is a post I have made which lists the steps I used:
Re: Installing Ethereal into Leopard via Darwin Ports
It should take about 3.5 hours to complete if your setup is similar to mine:
2GHz Core 2 Dual Intel CPU, Santa Rosa chipset MacBook with 4 GB memory, and
a fast DSL (310 KBps DTR) Internet connection.
1. Create an Apple Developer user acct if you do not have one:
http://developer.apple.com
Required to download Xcode
2. Download/install Xcode Developer Tools:
(it is on OS X DVD #1, but download may be more current)
Go to http://developer.apple.com
Do a search on Xcode
Select Xcode 3
Login
Download stats:
File size: 1.16GB
Time: 1 hr, 10 min at 310 KB/sec
Reboot after download to increase amt of free memory
Double-click the DMG file
Double-click the XcodeTools.mpkg file
Time: 8 min
Reboot to increase free memory
3. Verify X11 is installed:
It is by default in Leopard
(for Tiger, you must install it from the OS X DVD disc)
4. Install X11SDK:
Insert Apple OS X DVD disc #1
Dbl click on "Optional Installs"
Dbl click on Packages folder
Dbl click on X11DSK.pkg file
Time: 30 seconds
5. Install Darwin Ports:
Download from: http://darwinports.com/download/
Double-click the downloaded DMG file
Double-click the .pkg file
Time: 10 min
6. Update Darwin Ports:
Use Terminal.app
Enter: sudo port -d selfupdate
If you get following error message: (I did)
Error: /opt/local/bin/port: selfupdate failed: Couldnt sync dports tree:
sync failed doing rsync
Then disable all firewalls on the Mac
(my NAT-router was not a problem)
Total time: 2 min
Check amt of free memory
7. Install Ethereal:
Use Terminal.app
Enter: sudo port install ethereal
Time: 1 hr, 15 min
CPU usage: both cores were used heavily at times
8. Build the font cache before launching Ethereal for the first time:
Use Terminal.app
Enter: sudo fc-cache
Do not need to run it again before using Ethereal
Total time: Few seconds
9: Run Ethereal:
Use Terminal.app
Enter: sudo /opt/local/bin/ethereal
10: If Ethereal crashes: (mine did)
And if Terminal.app shows following error message:
"BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)"
Then download/install X11 v 2.1.3 from:
http://trac.macosforge.org/projects/xquartz
(Leopard's X11 has a bug)
11. Install AquaEthereal 1.2 to launch Ethereal from the Dock:
Download it from:
http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/AquaEthereal.shtml
Dbl click the .dmg dnload
Drag the .app file to the desktop:
(I drug it to the Application folder, but it would not show in the
Application folder)
Then drag that .app file to the Dock
12. Enable firewalls if you disabled them per above

Windows Vista >> Vista 64bit in domain gpo problem
Hi All,
Vista is great in a domain I must say. Alot better than XP. Anyway, I have
one issue. How do I set it so the log off button is the default button? At
the moment it's the sleep button. This doesn't work so well. I have tried
changing it under the Start Menu under system in the computer gpo, this
doesn't work though. Seems it is only for the classic startmenu.
Using admx btw.
Thanks,
Gorge

- Windows Vista >> Shut Down SLowRecently my 2007 HP Pavilion notebook computer (Intel Centrino Duo, 2 GB
RAM) has been taking at least 3-5 x longer to shut down than my desktop

delay and can the shut down time be shortened.
Thanks for help and advice.

- Windows Vista >> Having smaller icons on the Desktop? There was an easy way to do this in XP if I'm not mistaken, but I can't find
the option in Vista Ultimate: I would like the icons on my Desktop to be
smaller in size, as the icons of some of my older programs look grainy when
enlarged as much as they are.
How would I go about doing this? Changing the resolution has not
particularly helped.
Thanks!

- Windows Vista >> Have anyone successfully restored an disk image made with Windows Backup on Vista?Hi,
I've got Vista Ultimate and noticed that it comes with a whole disk
image based backup option. That's really a great way to back up since
you can get up again quite soon after a fatal hardware crash. However,
I would like to ask if anyone here have restored a computer using an
image stored on a USB drive made by Microsoft Backup on Vista Ultimate?
It's much simpler to create the image on a separate drive than to use
ton's of DVD's.

- Windows Vista >> Voice recognition only hears commands, on laptop and desktop!!!The laptop I bought has Vista Home Premium. I used word and then one day it
started to ONLY hear COMMANDS! It goes through training but in word, nothing,
in wordpad, nothing, no dictation anywhere. It only hears freaking commands.
I think the problem is the fact on the windows download site I downloaded XP
stuff for my desktop computer and it somehow has now screwed it up.
WTF!!
The desktop has XP and I got a trial of vista and, guess what, the SAME
problem after I tried to download WMP11 for XP.

- Windows Vista >> inaccessible system shortcuts? One problem with Vista I haven't been able to figure out (or understand why
this would happen) is why Windows-created shortcuts for user folders (my

on these shortcuts, I get the error "access is denied." Obviously it's not an
issue of permissions since these are for my own account.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how I can get the Windows 2003 Server Admin

just the WSUS admin console and use it.. but if I install both, the MMC
tells me it can't create the snap-in.
Thanks,

- Windows Vista >> Easy Trasnfer - miscellaneous locations?I'm going to upgrade my Vista machine and re-load the OS, so I'm using easy

- Windows Vista >> Media Center and sleepWhat is the proper operation of the system when media centre is playing live
TV? What happens now is that the screen saver will come on as set to do
after 10 minutes then the monitors will go into standby mode after 30
minutes, but the computer will never sleep after 60 minutes as it is supposed
to do.
Now, perhaps this is as designed during live TV, but if it is, wouldn't it
also be by design for it to override the screen saver and turning off the
monitor settings so as not to interrrupt the TV broadcast?
In the power settings I do have it set to allow the computer to sleep while
sharing media.
So, what is considered normal sleep operation in this case? When media
centre is not running the computer sleeps at the 60 minute mark as it is
supposed to.
Thanks.

- Windows Vista >> Restore point oddity?I have multilple drives installed on Vista Home Premium but I only
want the main C drive to have system restore set. Easy you would think
but when I look in the system restore window it tells me that it has
set a restore point for both c and j? Ok so I click J/apply and it
gives me the message 'Do you reallt want to turn off etc" I say
yes/OK. All restore points on J vanish as expected. Right then create
a new restore point. All goes fine BUT it creates a restore point on
the J drive againas well as the C drive!! How can I turn off system
restore on the J drive ( a SATA drive) permanently?
No matter how many times I go through this, confirming that I don't
want SR on this drive, it still creates one!!
cheers,
Len

Will XP's 'execution stay' for emerging markets apply to other countries?
Posted by Mary Jo Foley
Speculation continues to swirl as to when and whether Microsoft will extend
the June 30, 2008, cut-off date on which many PC makers will be expected to
cease bundling Windows XP with new PCs.
But some pundits seem to have forgotten that when Microsoft initially
granted Windows XP five more months to live, back in 2007, the company left
itself a loophole. (And I don't mean just the early 2009 cut-off date it
granted white-box vendors/system builders). Late last year, Microsoft
officials said that vendors preloading Windows on PCs aimed at "emerging
markets" wouldn't have to stop selling Windows XP until 2010.
From Microsoft's September 27, 2007, press release:
"(S)ince some of the systems that ship in emerging markets don't meet the
requirements for Windows Vista, we will be extending availability of Windows
XP Starter Edition to June 30, 2010. This will allow our OEM partners who
sell PCs in emerging markets more opportunity to offer genuine Windows
licenses."
The new question that company watchers are asking this week is whether
Microsoft will extend this 2010 date to cover "low-cost" PCs - like the Asus
Eee ultra-cheap laptop - even if those PCs aren't running XP Starter
Edition.
I would expect Microsoft would find offering XP for another year-plus on
those PCs to be a lesser evil than conceding the low-cost PC market to
Linux. If these machines do not have enough processing power to run Windows
Vista (not even the Home Basic edition), what else can Microsoft expect
their manufacturers to do, other than to continue to offer the systems with
XP?
Will Microsoft extend its XP-preload cut-off date again, outside of these
fringe cases? My bet is no. Microsoft will be shooting itself in the foot if
it does this, as it would be concedinng that there are real reasons that
users and its hardware/software partners might not want its latest Windows
release (which is now over a year old, mind you)..
What's your take? Will any amount of outcry stop Microsoft from making good
on its June 30 XP preload cut-off date?
