- Windows Vista >> Program Starting Security OptionSince I started to use a new computer with Vista Home Premium, all three
programs from Xara (Webstyle 4, 3D and Xtreme) have problems in starting.
Based on their Support suggestions, I am supposed to make sure I run the
programs As Administrator and if continued with problems to "Check the
starting security option of webstyle, enable the option "start as
administrator" .
How one can check or enable the STARTING SECURITY OPTION?

- Windows Vista >> Copying problemIn each of 8 lessons in a teaching manual I normally use a batch file to
copy the files pertinent to the lesson from a course CD to a folder on the
C: drive. Lately I am running across a problem where a few docx and picture
files amongst others are not coming across. Nor are they always the same
ones that miss out. I cannot find the reason why this is so. Changing the
copy command to robocopy does not help either. I am running Vista Home
Premium; could the behaviour be a consequence of havng updated to SP1?
I would be grateful for an explanation and more about a solution.

- Windows Vista >> Firewall for VistaI'm looking for suggestions on a decent third party firewall for Vista. For
XP, I was using Sygate.
What I'm looking for in a firewall is one that
1. Allows you to setup MAC and IP filtering so that only certain MAC
addresses and IP Addresses can access a pc on the intranet.
2. Shows you a list of all running applications and their status - ie
approved, denied, must ask for internet access
3. Prompts you when a new application tries to access the net.
Number 2 is rather important as I often find myself logging into the
firewall just to check which applications are actually running and
communicating on the net at any given time.
Thank you

- Windows Vista >> Invalid ERS versionMy first post: on start-up, I get a pop-up window that says "Invalid ERS
version" that I click "OK" that is followed by another pop-up window that has
no text message but I click "OK". Clicking "OK" makes the pop-up go away
OK, but this is getting old. Anyone know what this is all about and how I
can fix this?

- Windows Vista >> Error=429 : ActiveX component can't create objectHi,
I have a problem in Vista Home Premium with two commercial programs,
one in VB and the other in a script environment. Both give the above
message.
I have spent hour investigating and have got to the following point.
I can correct the error temporarily by running "regsvr32 scrrun.dll"
from the CMD prompt (Run as Administrator). The error is eliminated in
both programs but returns when the computer is re-booted.
If I re-start the machine in Safe Mode the error remains corrected.
I have tried preventing all start-up programs from loading at re-boot
but this did not eliminate the problem.
I suspect that data is loaded to the registry at boot time and this
contains the corruption, however I do not know how to proceed further.
Any assistance would be appreciated !

- Windows Vista >> system volume information? What is it?following my earlier post reference unusual amounts of hard disk space being
used......................................I have partitioned a 300gb HDD so
that C has 240GB and D has the remainder.
C is reporting that I have used 200GB but this cannot be so as I only have
operating system and a few progs and pics plus about 16gb music so where has
all the used space come from?
I probably have only used about 50gb max. I cannot find any file/folder that
has excessive amounts of data. How do I rectify this?
I have subsequently found a file called System volume information and it is
taking up 159gb of hard disk space but if I try to view the file there seems
to be nothing in it...what do I do to release all of this hard drive space?

- Windows Vista >> Vista Home Premium Backup function. Is there a way to set the backup program to do a full system backup in Home
Premium ? Or will I need to get a third party backup program ?
I just spent a full day restoring my system due to an HD failure, Took 2 min
to restore the auto backup of my personal folders, lot of good that does.
According to MS full backup is only avalable in Ultimate and Business
versions.
Thanks for any help on this...

- Windows Vista >> Vista TPWhat would happen to wiping your ass, if MS manufactured toilet paper?
First you'd have to activate your roll of toilet paper. Then you'd need
to validated it. Of course the license will state that you can only use
your roll of toilet paper on the first ass it was used on. If your roll
of toilet paper was installed on an older toilet paper dispenser, it
won't work, or work so slow that you have to sh*t again by the time
you've pulled out enough toilet paper.
The toilet paper would of course be full of bugs and nonfunctional for a
lot of people until the first Service Pack, that is if they can install
it at all because there are no drivers for your older TP dispensers. But
of course, because the original installation is so screwed up, SP1 will
fail, and they just have an unusable roll of TP.
So MS would make a easy thing into a chore, and many users will just
switch to using a shower to wipe their ass, as that is now easier, or
they'll want to install the old XP version of TP that works both faster
and easier.
On the bright side, public restrooms could be converted in bath houses
for Republicans & Fundamentalist Christians.

Something is obviously running in the background, but there is no way that
anyone can help you with so little information. Here are some general
troubleshooting steps and also some links to help you with your next
newsgroup post. I'm not saying this to hurt your feelings, just trying to
help you out.
The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things
worked and the time they didn't?
The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus
status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and
versions) did you use to determine this?
Be sure the computer is clean:

- Windows Vista >> WMC/TV Tuner and Digital Cable Box - Scrambled SignalI am having a really hard time and I'm usually fairly good at troubleshooting
these things. I bought a new Acer Media Center with WMC and Windows Vista
installed.
My cable normally comes in through a set top box and then to the TV on a
normal cable wire, and then goes out of my cable box on either a normal wire
or component video to my TV. When I hooked up the computer, I connected the
cable box to the TV tuner card in the computer (YUAN Card) instead. On the
computer, the signal comes out garbled when I load it in WMC. On the TV, the
signal comes out fine if I move the cable over.
I can get the lower channels on the TV Tuner if I connect the cable from the
wall directly into the TV Tuner card on the computer, bypassing the set-top
box completely but I can't get the upper channels under any circumstances.
Anyone have ideas for me? I know so little about this technology that I
don't know where to start. I do have an IR transmitter of some kind as well
which might help... but again I'm not sure.
Any help appreciated.

- Windows Vista >> LCD softwareI have an older LCD monitor (Benq T705) and was wondering if Vista (or
another app) can be used to control the display without having to use the
monitor adjustment buttons.
Ideally, I'd like to be able to set up "profiles" for different types of use
(text, video, games) and use software to select them.
Thanks in advance.

- Windows Vista >> Any advantage of Vista over XP Pro, especially for video editingI have recently rebuilt my entire computer, upgraded from a Pentium 4 to a
Quad Core, 4 MB DDR2, EVGA MB, 750 GB SATA HD, basically a very fast
hardware setup. My primary goal is to do DVD authoring faster, I have a Sony
HDR-SR5 HandyCam HD camcorder. The old system would take up to (combined) 12
hours or more to convert and then master a DVD that was origninally shot in
the AVCHD format that Sony uses and then mastered and burned using Adobe
Premiere Elements v. 3.0. I was going to buy Vista 32 bit thinking it might
be better for this purpose, but was wondering if the XP Pro I had been using
would be as good for this purpose. Also, would staying with XP necessitate
me doing a bunch of driver upgrades that Vista might already have in it. I
really liked XP, it is just that the system was getting slower and slower
doing things I needed to do as my computing tasks increased in complexity for
the hardware I had.

- Windows Vista >> Windows XP/Vista Upgrade Dual-BootI apologize, I'm sure this has been asked a million times before, but I'm
finding so much contradictory and/or outdated information that I honestly
don't know what's possible at this point. I'm sure someone out there
probably has a form-reply to this at this point! ;) I blame Microsoft
entirely for not making things like this at all clear (or at least not easy
to find)!
Anyway, I've got Windows XP Pro (SP2) and want to purchase and install
Windows Home Premium in a dual-boot configuration *without* wiping out the
XP install.
1) Can I do this with an Upgrade copy of Vista, or do I need to buy a Full
version?
2) What, if anything, do I need to do to ensure that XP isn't overwritten?
Thanks,
Rob

- Windows Vista >> Vista dual boot, aborted setup loopI have a bit of a strange situation. I have Vista Business installed
as a dual boot on a partition on my machine. The dual boot works fine
between my XP and the Vista operating system.
However, this has been difficult for me to use as a developer, testing
my software on the Vista platform, and having to reboot back and forth
all the time. So I installed Virtual PC, and attempted to put Vista
on the virtual machine. When I attempted to installed Vista, it
apparently was trying to run the install on my XP operating system,
and not the virtual machine (it seems it was not the actual active
window, but it was difficult to tell).
So I aborted the install, and it rolled back my XP operating system,
which seems to still be working fine. But it has left a Windows Setup
boot option in my list of bootable OS's, and it is set to start after
only 2 seconds. It loads that, then reboots again quickly, then again
I have two seconds to change it to boot to either XP (earlier version
of Windows) or Vista. This is a pain in the you-know-what, so I am
wondering if there is a solution to this.
I downloaded the tool VistaBootPro, and if I look at the "detailed"
view, I can see the Setup option listed there (see below). But if I
go to manage the OS entries, I only see the two (earlier version, and
Vista).
