- Windows Vista >> SATA Dvd drive install freeze with VistaJust installed a SATA Samsung S203 DVD RW which causes VIsta to freeze
within about 60seconds! Have tried updating the motherboard, and
graphics drivers but no luck. I did manage to get it to work just once
when I disabled Magic ISO virtual CD device driver, at which point the
message 'installing device drivers' appeared on reboot and the drive
worked. But then had to do a rollback for various reasons and even
uninstalling my virtual CD device driver completely does not solve the
problem anymore.
This also happened with an LG DVD SATA burner so I'm thinking there's
nothing wrong with the drive, and the system has been working fine for
almost a year. Any ideas before I do a reinstall of the OS? I would
really like to know how to solve this issue before reformatting

- Windows Vista >> Good news: vista is free since SP1Here is the link: http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=334.
After SP1 is released, you can borrow a genuine Vista installation DVD from
a friend (I do not recommend to download Vista DVD from the web since it may
contains malicious code) and install it on your machine. Then apply SP1. OK,
all you have to do is to click 'activate later' if it appears and enjoy free
Vista experience.

- Windows Vista >> Help with Important Vista FeaturesI have been trying to solve two big problems myself, with the help of web
searches. I have come up with zero results. I installed Vista three weeks
ago. I discovered recently that system restore points are not being created.
I know I set them up. For some reason the system is not creating any. I also
noticed that I have msinfo32.exe file but no information is there. I have
tried various tips from the web searches. I can't help feeling they are
related problems. I decided to run a diagnostic on the system. I do have
corrupted or missing startup files. I have a feeling thatâ??s related too. I
don't know how to repair the files. I did insert the Vista disk to see if I
could repair it with a partial restore from the disk. But the disk only does
that with a restore option. Since I have no restore points, my only other
option was to do a full reinstall/restore of the entire operating system.
That would set me back many days. The upside is that I do like the new OS.
I'd love to see it work perfect to really get to love it! I have a dual
system boot. I'm glad that I did that, at least. I can go back to use XP for
my deadlines. But my mail won't sync if I keep doing that. Files are all
backed up. I was thinking of backing up the programs but Iâ??ve heard that is
not wise to do. Can anyone save me before I go under?! Itâ??s so easy and
effortless to do so much damage in so little time! So, here are my primary
problem.
1. I need to recreate my msinfo32.exe
2. I have to get system restore up and running
3. If all fails, can I backup programs on my storage disk along with my
files, with a program to do the work? I don't mean drop and drag.
Any help or thoughts would be so enlighting..... Thanks. I hope to be able
to return the good will someday. I'm learning a lot. This has me stumped and
road blocked.
Keep on computin',

- Windows Vista >> Need help with a downgrade of Vista Home Premium to XP!!!Hello all,
As I have said in my other posts I am having a lot of trouble with my new
computer and Windows Vista. The trouble is I can't find anyone willing or
able to work on a Vista OPS. I'm not able to stream live events from
EspN360.COM or NBA League Pass Broadband on NBA.com. So I would like to
install my old XP Pro. I got everything into the computer last night and I
guess I was missing some drivers, because my cpu wouldn't read the PCI or
video card, and it wouldn't even allow me to go into sleep mode, as well as
not get onto the internet. So I reinstalled Vista, and of course I'm still
having the same problems. I should have wrote down what all I was in need of
on XP but it was 430 in the morning and apparently I was pretty tired. If you
could help me figure this out and possibly give me a step by step process of
what I really need to do to do this correctly I would be extremely grateful
and possibly be in "AWE" of you and your skills!
Here are my computer's spec's just in case:
GATEWAY GT5622
3 GIGS of DDR2 Dual Channel MemoryRAM
2160 Dual core processor (1.8)
400 GB SATA II Hard Drive
15 in 1 memory card reader
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 Video
Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit edition
Thanks and God Bless!

Basically, how do I correct the problem?
This is occurring on two identical machines, both of which were updated from
Windows XP Professional. Not a great deal of interesting stuff on these
machines--simple workstations. I suspect this may have resulted from the
upgrade, rather than the clean install.
The PCs seem to work fine except for these errors.

- Windows Vista >> Odd behaviour in Publisher (Office) 2007I have raised this issue in the MS Publisher NG, and it has been
suggested there that it is a Vista problem.
When this programme (Publisher 2007) opens, and the mouse is put over
the icons for the various designs/templates, or, over existing
publications, there is a horrible grinding noise from (I believe) the
floppy drive. I have placed a floppy in the drive and after an initial
'seek', the programme behaves as it should. Remove the floppy, and the
grinding noise, which is somewaht intrusive, returns.
Any ideas or suggestions?

- Windows Vista >> losing dial up propertieswhy is it that when I open the dial up properties for my ISDN connection the

windows vista home basic
I am in a country using a dial up provider that gave me a mile long user

through my wife's user account. I don't dare look at the properties there so
they don't get lost or distorted.
that is one way they password gets jacked. the other way is I have connected
my wife's laptop through cross over and networked the net through internet
gateway. now that I have allowed the desktop to allow other computers on the
network access the internet connection and tested it, only the laptop can
access the internet and any user account on the desktop gets the bad

- Windows Vista >> audio deviceHi,
My vista home basic installation, installed on an intel motherboard and
realtek audio driver, works fine when connected through the back panel of my
case - but just will not see or connect to the audio sockets on the front
panel.
This is all the more strange cos when I change OS (and not anything else)
Linux works fine with both front and back connections for recording and
playing (input and output)
In vista, when i look from Control Panel at my audio devices, the native
windows Sound info window telld me only the back panel connection exists for
output, but that a front panel input socket exists but is not connected
(although my headset is plugged in).
The Realtek audio info window (from Control Panel) tells me there are front
and back panel connections but the front panel cinnections are greyed out.
Can anyone help me get this darned thing to work properly.??

Windows Vista >> Vista unexpected shutdown with no restart, no apparent reason
I'm running Vista Premium on a Gateway MT6451 notebook.
My computer continues to shutdown unexpectedly for no apparent reason. It
does not restart automatically. I can restart it, usually with no problem,
but this is keeping me from accomplishing anything. I have to constantly save
files, etc to avoid losing them. Yesterday this happened about 7 times. The
frequency seems to be increasing.
This has happened when the only application I had open was Mozilla Firefox.
I've used the reliability monitor and it lists several disruptive shutdowns.
The only other symptom is my HP printer. When I move my laptop, I unplug the
printer USB. When I plug it back it, it has to completely reload drivers,
etc. I have deleted the printer from my system to see if it's the cause, but
I can't keep it that way!
I've also used the Memory Diagnostic tool, which is supposed to check memory
and restart the computer. It did not restart the computer when I ran out, so
I don't know if it actually "did" anything.
I ran Checkdisk and it reported my problems.
I've run McAfee and there are no viruses.
How do I obtain diagnostics to determine the problem and where do I find
error logs, etc? Please speak in layman's terms and pretend I'm clueless.
I don't know where to go from here. I've searched the Microsoft Knowledge
base, but found nothing that seems to apply.

Sounds like an issue with an overheating CPU.

Windows Vista >> Vista unexpected shutdown with no restart, no apparent reason
Hi,
Is there a stop error?
Have you checked the system logs in the event viewer?
If is shutting down with no messages, then it is being initiated by the
system hardware, likely in response to an overheating condition. It could be
that a fan or its control is faulty, or that the intake/exhaust vents are
being blocked. Most hardware will do this now to prevent damage to the
system, and it won't get better until the problem is corrected by replacing
the faulty unit or ensuring proper heat dissemination.

Windows Vista >> Vista unexpected shutdown with no restart, no apparent reason
I found the event log. There are two errors that appear somewhat regularly:
Source R300, event ID 43015, task category DAL
Source ACPI, event ID 6, task category none.
As for overheating, that could be the issue. My fan seems to run almost
constantly, and the computer wills till feel quite warm where I rest my hands
to type. Fortunately, I'm still under warranty. I will have that checked,
unless you know what the above errors mean. I certainly don't.
Thank you.

Windows Vista >> Vista unexpected shutdown with no restart, no apparent reason
During summer 2006 my laptop would shut down after around 1 hours use. I
was puzzled until I realised it was overheating. A good dust removal
session on the fans / exhaust vents did the job and it never crashed /
shut down like that again. It's worth a go - hope the fan etc is
accessible.
Let the computer cool down before digging around inside.

Today:
I've let it completely cool down (turned off) three times and run the Memory
Diagnostic Tool. It got to 84%, 12%, and 90%, then shuts down. The computer
did not feel warm at all.
Could this be memory related?

Windows Vista >> Vista unexpected shutdown with no restart, no apparent reason
There is a company that makes convenient fans for notebook computers. I used
to buy them on eBay they cost $25.00 a few years ago. they are durable and
convenient. I also use them to cool down small free standing pieces like
modems, routers, etc.
They are flat and fit a notebook size.

I removed the panel on the bottom and cleaned out the fan areas. I also ran
the Memory Diagnostic Tool and it went all the way through with no errors.
The problem seems to be fixed! It's been on for about four hours and still
is not warm on the top.
Thanks for all your help, everyone.

I have Acronis 11 TI, but it started hanging on me yesterday under Vista.
it always hangs for 40 secs or so running standalone.
I tried Paragon Drive Backup 8.51, it imaged okay but wanted 2 hrs plus to

send them a note).
I tried rtt r-drive image and it imaged fine but I couldn't boot the damn

Tried casper but it images 1:1 and I don't have the HD capacity at the
moment (sata 160 and IDE 80) and prefer the compressed images that I can
put to DVD occasionally if I so choose (and I do)
Latest PQDI on torrent is 7 which is flagged as Vista non-compatable anyway
(I didn't try it).
I used to use ghost but a while back when I upgraded, the boot cd caused a
bluescreen because it wanted to call home on an intel NIC, so I went to
Acronis.
I keep looking around but would appreciate ideas!

no user interaction is required.
I understand that switching off, or hibernating, would be the ideal
solution, but if the machine does work over night, that's not an
option. The power icon makes it easy to save power under this
scenario. Isn't Microsoft supposed to be promoting energy efficiency?
Not much sign of it in Vista.
Maybe they'll say "Oh, we thought people just used the power icon for
looking at the battery on laptops". It's exactly this kind of second-
guessing which is driving me insane in Microsoft software of late. The
new slogan appears to be "where do we want you to go today?" Nanny
knows best! The more I use Vista, the more useful features I find that
have been removed or disabled, presumably "for my own good".

- Windows Vista >> Icons Size and Monitor ResolutionVery strange problem; I have a Dell XPS 1730; running vista ult; max
resolution is 1900 x 1200. I have hooked this laptop up to a 50" plasma
monitor resolution 1368 x 720 (or so). I can get the monitor to work by
reducing the res; but strange thing starts happening on the destop the icons
start getting bigger and bigger until 2 or 3 icon fill up the whole screen
(it kind of seems like it is cyling through big, bigger biggest). When I
reset the icons to small size they cycle up again without me touching the
computer.
Any ideas????

- Windows Vista >> DOS Prompt HereWith Vista, in Windows Explorer, when I right click on a folder and select
'DOS Prompt Here' the DOS prompt always starts in C:\Windows\system32 not
the highlighted folder. That's using the folder list on the left side. If
I try it with a folder on the right side, it opens the DOS prompt in the
parent directory of the folder I have highlighted.
What gives?

- Windows Vista >> Empty holder can not be deletedI encouter from time to time situation where I can not delete file
holder. The following is the one just happened.
I downloaded a zip file on the desktop, created a holder in D: drive,
moved the zip file to it, and unzipped the zip file. In the unzipping
process a new sub-holder was automatically created and extracted files
were saved in that sub-holder.
Then, I could delete the zip file, all extracted files, but could not
delete the automatically created sub-holder.
Could anyone help me understand why and how to delete it?

- Windows Vista >> Dvd wont play in Dvd playerOk guys, I finally am able to burn a dvd from my camcorder with DVD maker.
However, the dvd will not play in my dvd player. It's a fairly new Sony
progressive scan dvd player and says it play all types of dvd's
(R+,RW+,R-,RW-) My computer is brand new and also plays all of the above
dvd's. I was using DVD-R for my burning, it is what I use when backing up
dvd's that I own with no problems. So why is DVD maker having a problem
encoding my camcorder to dvd format? Or is there another problem that I dont
know about. I greatly appreciate all of your help.

- Windows Vista >> Variations of Aero? There are many themes for Windows XP Luna interface. Windows Vista,
however, has only one version of Aero ( we can change the color and
its intensity though). Is it possible to make other themes for Aero,
like different system button styles or different border, different
material, etc. Or, is it impossible to customize it by its
architecture? I'm not going to make a custom theme, but am just
curious about it.
PS : Personally, I like Aero better than Mac OSX's look and feel,
except for fonts and menus. I like OSX's larger fonts and translucent
menu better.

- Windows Vista >> Problems with Windows DreamSceneVersión en español:
Hoy me ha pasado que al encender el ordenador, el vÃdeo que tenÃa de fondo
sólo aparecÃa como pixels aleatorios de colores alrededor de la pantalla. Sin
embargo, sólo me pasa con algunos vÃdeos, y no es por problema del vÃdeo, ya
que si lo abro con otra aplicación se ven correctamente.
He intentado desinstalando dreamscene y volviéndolo a instalar, pero pasa lo
mismo.
¿Se os ocurre algo más que pueda intentar?
Pd. Tengo windows Vista Ultimate 64 bits.
Gracias y un saludo
Version in English:
Today after starting the computer, the video that I had as wallpaper "had
disappeared" and I can only see random color pixels around the screen.
However, it only happens with some videos, and it isn't a video problem
because if I open it with other application I can see it correctly.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling dreamscene, but the same happens.
Do you know more things I can try?
Postscript. I have Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bits.
Thanks and Greetings.
