- Windows Vista >> Greetings Workshop and VistaHi:
I have used Greetings Workshop (1996 version) since I have had it with no
prior problems with Microsoft Operating Systems, including XP Home Edition.
I installed it on my new computer which has Windows Vista and now I am
getting an error that indicates I am having trouble accessing the data base.
Apparently Greetings Workshop has been replaced with Picture It and now I
have all these cards (files) that I have created through the years that I no
longer can access. I have untold number of hours creating these files.
Does anyone have a solution to my problem with Vista where I can access my
prior files etc?

- Windows Vista >> KeyboardMy system seems to lose its keyboard when awoken from sleep (though pressing
the spacebar to wake it up clearly works). I then have to go through the
rigmarole of switch user and logging back in before it works again - which
on this PB-shite machine takes about 5 minutes.
Anybody familiar with this problem and what one might do about it?
OS is Vista home basic.

- Windows Vista >> Windows ExplorerBack in XP my Windows Explorer icon was set up with the command line
parameter "/e" which made the program always open up with the "C:\"
directory file tree open for viewing.
With Vista it defaults to showing a bunch of document folders that are of no
use to me. I'd rather see the disk file tree in the normal manner rather
than a bastardized folder tree.
Is there some command line parameter that can be added to make it show the
simple disk file tree by default? Or is it easier to just find a third
party directory tool instead?

- Windows Vista >> can't activate Digital Cable TV -- anybody else run into this problem?hi,
I can't activate Digital Cable TV for my windows Vista Ultimate, it
doesn't accept the product key supplied, I tried numerous times (and
yes, I have the correct one, the one for Digital Cable TV activation..)
I finally called folks where I purchased computer (since I assume it's
impossible to get tech support from MS) and they said this is known
problem, that it's not accepting the product key b/c it got corrupted,
and I have to re-install it.. now the only way to re-install Vista is
to lose all data in my machine b/c -- now where does MS get these
brilliant ideas -- when you re-install Vista form supplied CD it erases
all data in your machine..
before embarking on this, I'd like to know if other users of Vista have
come across same problem and what solution they have found..
(do MS folks ever read this newsgroup? ARE they interested at all in
user feedback? in getting problems reported to them?? I guess MS only
really cares about business users, I don't think they care at all about
individual users..)

- Windows Vista >> Stretched screen upon waking from sleepHello,
I am using Vista Home Premium on an HP Pavilion dv6458se laptop. Upon
awaking from sleep, the screen always appears stretched by about 1.3 (width
wise). I know it's not a problem with resolution. I used to be able to
correct it by closing the screen and reopening it, upon which the display
would go back to normal.
Now, however, it remains stretched. I tried shutting down and restarting a
few times before searching these forums. I read advice from someone telling
the user to uninstall his graphics driver and reinstall a new one. So I
uninstalled my current one and reinstalled the newest version obtained from
the HP website (NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150, version 7.15.10.9815)
The problem persists, however... it's quite frustrating. What else can I do
to correct the problem?

- Windows Vista >> "new" HP laptop with a Windows Vista Administrator already registeI just bought an HP computer from office depot, but the display was the last
one they had, and they said they weren't ordering any more of the particular
kind I wanted so I went ahead and bought it.
Windows Vista already has an adminstrator account registered - "op" - and I
do not know the password... is there a way I can override this to change the
password?
Or should I call the store or HP for assistance?

- Windows Vista >> A "genuine" Vista losses registration and becomes "not genuine"This is really a bizarre situation. I run Vista Business in a Dell Precision
workstation with a 3.75 mz processor and 4 mb memory. Six months ago, I
upgraded the original XP to Vista in a perfectly legal transaction (although
I have regretted doing the upgrade ever since). Vista had a series of
operational problems, the worst of which was to have the taskbar freeze every
time I opened Windows Explorer.
2 days ago, trying to fix the problem (for the hundredth time) I followed
the suggestion in a newsgroup to open System Configuration, set it to
Diagnostic Startup, and reboot. The idea was to see if the taskbar still
froze while the computer ran in this mode. I did it, and the taskbar did not
freeze.
I shut down the computer for the day. This morning, when I rebooted, I was
faced with a black screen, a message that said my version of VISTA was not
genuine and asked if I wanted to register or buy a new license.
I tried to 1) reenter the key, 2) re-register, 3) run VISTA under reduced
capability, etc. In all cases I got the same message:
"Windows Activation Error"
A problem occurred when Windows tried to activate
Error code 0x8007000D
The Data is Invalid"
In desperation, I tried to restart in Safe Mode. After several failures I
managed to make it run in safe mode. I got rid of the antivirus and any other
profgram that could prevent registration and I ran again the System
Configuration to set it to Normal Startup. And I rebooted.
The system started, but its operation is really flawed:
1. There is a message in the lower right corner that says " Windos Vista,
Build 6000, This copy of Windows is not genuine.
2. I cannot print or use Windows Media Player
3. Internet explorer is very sluggish and I cannot run anything that
requires scripts. In fact I could not open this newsgroup and read messages.
4. I cannot see printers in the network, althought I can access files in
other computers in the network
5. Vista runs much slower than before (which makes my 3.7 mz processor feel
like an ancient 486)
I went through the registration process again. This time it went through,
but the "not genuine" message still shows on the screen.
I used Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder to view the registration key stored in
the system It is there and it is correct.
Is there anything else I can do to salvage this Vista installation?
otherwise I will swallow hard and reinstall Windows XP. Next time, I will
think very hard before updating any other computer to Vista.

- Windows Vista >> Scroll Speed - Poor scrolling in explorerWhen in Vista Explorer scrolling using the mouse is terrible!!
I have an MS 6000 wireless keyboard and mouse, I have set the scroll speed
how I like it and it works fine in Firefox etc.
However, when it comes to explorer it's terrible, moving the scroll wheel
does nothing for a while then the file list 'scrolls' by almost a screenfull
at a single jump. It's very much like using the 'page up' and 'page down'
keys. I though Vista had smooth scrolling by default?
I have my mouse scrolling set to go faster depending on the speed you turn
the wheel. I've changed the settings, trying various permutations but
nothing seems to improve things.
I also have the same problem in Windows Mail, the list of newsgroup articles
scrolls the same as in explorer, in chunks, while in the article reading
pane the text scroll smoothly and with varying speed depending on how fast I
turn the wheel.
In both cases dragging the scroll bar up and down works fine, it seems to be
just the mouse wheel.
Any help or suggestions appreciated.

I have a new HP Pavilion 9628nr laptop that came with Vista Home Premium
pre-loaded on it.
I purchased the Vista Ultimate Anytime Upgrade directly from Microsoft and
saved the license file to the hard drive on the laptop. I've tried to
upgrade to Ultimate about 3 times, using the Anytime Upgrade option, but it
keeps failing.
The upgrade gets almost to the end of the process and then it throws an
error stating that there are some system components that cannot be upgraded
and that I should check my machine to make sure it is compatible.
I have checked the laptop and it is fully compatible with Vista Ultimate.
I've got 240 GB of hard drive space (about 200 GB free), 2 GB of RAM and all
the latest drivers for my hardware.
I paid $159.00 to purchase the Ultimate Anytime Upgrade option directly from
Microsoft, but am unable to install it. If I can't use it, does anyone know
if MS has a return policy for uninstallable upgrades?
I'd much rather be able to install Ultimate as I have it on my desktop and
need the capabilities it has (RDP, etc.) on the laptop. Any ideas?

Pentium! What are the best things I can do to speed it up? How do I work out
what Vista is doing when it's grinding away? Every time I open the Task
Manager there's always only a few processes running above 0% CPU
utilization - and even those are only around 3%!
If it wasn't for client's using Vista I wouldn't have bothered. Seems to
give me nothing over XP except a bit headache and wiping out the value of my
new computer's hardware!

I would be grateful if someone could help me out with this one.
Which is the recommended way of carrying a laptop? Should it be Sleep or in
Hibernate mode while it is being carried around in a case or a sleeve? I
would have thought that carrying a laptop in sleep was safe. However,
recently I had found it had woken up and got really hot -- until finally it
was shutoff due to a safety feature that prevents it from overheating.
Which mode do most of you prefer when you carry your computers around?

I have a problem in Vista Home Premium with two commercial programs,
one in VB and the other in a script environment. Both give the above
message.
I have spent hour investigating and have got to the following point.
I can correct the error temporarily by running "regsvr32 scrrun.dll"
from the CMD prompt (Run as Administrator). The error is eliminated in
both programs but returns when the computer is re-booted.
If I re-start the machine in Safe Mode the error remains corrected.
I have tried preventing all start-up programs from loading at re-boot
but this did not eliminate the problem.
I suspect that data is loaded to the registry at boot time and this
contains the corruption, however I do not know how to proceed further.
Any assistance would be appreciated !

... and you'll see a progress bar AFTER "file in use" message error.
why a file deleting progress bar is shown if the file can't be deleted? This
is an huge bug!

- Windows Vista >> ease of use: how to always use on-screen keyboard in Welcome screenI just installed Vista on a computer. I can not use a keyboard because
of disability. So I use the on-screen keyboard of vista. To log in on
the Welcome screen I have to click Ease of Use center and select the
on-screen keyboard. On the desktop the on-screen keyboard is
automatically started.
Is there a way to bypass the Ease of Use Center and have the on-screen
keyboard start up automatically in the Welcome screen ?

Based on their Support suggestions, I am supposed to make sure I run the

- Windows Vista >> Copying problemIn each of 8 lessons in a teaching manual I normally use a batch file to
copy the files pertinent to the lesson from a course CD to a folder on the
C: drive. Lately I am running across a problem where a few docx and picture
files amongst others are not coming across. Nor are they always the same
ones that miss out. I cannot find the reason why this is so. Changing the
copy command to robocopy does not help either. I am running Vista Home
Premium; could the behaviour be a consequence of havng updated to SP1?
I would be grateful for an explanation and more about a solution.

First you'd have to activate your roll of toilet paper. Then you'd need
to validated it. Of course the license will state that you can only use
your roll of toilet paper on the first ass it was used on. If your roll
of toilet paper was installed on an older toilet paper dispenser, it
won't work, or work so slow that you have to sh*t again by the time
you've pulled out enough toilet paper.
The toilet paper would of course be full of bugs and nonfunctional for a
lot of people until the first Service Pack, that is if they can install
it at all because there are no drivers for your older TP dispensers. But
of course, because the original installation is so screwed up, SP1 will
fail, and they just have an unusable roll of TP.
So MS would make a easy thing into a chore, and many users will just
switch to using a shower to wipe their ass, as that is now easier, or
they'll want to install the old XP version of TP that works both faster
and easier.
On the bright side, public restrooms could be converted in bath houses
for Republicans & Fundamentalist Christians.

Premium ? Or will I need to get a third party backup program ?
I just spent a full day restoring my system due to an HD failure, Took 2 min
to restore the auto backup of my personal folders, lot of good that does.
According to MS full backup is only avalable in Ultimate and Business
versions.

that C has 240GB and D has the remainder.
C is reporting that I have used 200GB but this cannot be so as I only have
operating system and a few progs and pics plus about 16gb music so where has
all the used space come from?
I probably have only used about 50gb max. I cannot find any file/folder that
has excessive amounts of data. How do I rectify this?
I have subsequently found a file called System volume information and it is
taking up 159gb of hard disk space but if I try to view the file there seems
to be nothing in it...what do I do to release all of this hard drive space?

- Windows Vista >> Firewall for VistaI'm looking for suggestions on a decent third party firewall for Vista. For
XP, I was using Sygate.
What I'm looking for in a firewall is one that
1. Allows you to setup MAC and IP filtering so that only certain MAC
addresses and IP Addresses can access a pc on the intranet.
2. Shows you a list of all running applications and their status - ie
approved, denied, must ask for internet access
3. Prompts you when a new application tries to access the net.
Number 2 is rather important as I often find myself logging into the
firewall just to check which applications are actually running and
communicating on the net at any given time.
