Internet Explorer / IE >> Windows Explorer unstable since IE7
Hello,
Since installing IE7 via Windows Update (hence the final version of course),
Windows Explorer (NOT IE7) occasionally crashes. This happens with or
without a running IE7 session.
From tome to time, let's say 2 - 3 times a day there's suddenly a window
popping up with the message that Windows Explorer has a problem and needs to
shut down, followed by a Dr. Watson crash. So far I could not find a
straight pattern to reproduce this behavior, it is really intermittently. My
main questions are:
- Is this a known issue?
- Is there a way to solve?
- How to track down the reason of this particular problem?
Note that running IE7 is not a problem, I can browse the Internet without
any troubles.
My OS is Windows XP PRO SP2 (English). The machine ran perfectly before IE7.
All help greatly appreciated.
Best Regards,
Perry
PS: since I wrote this message we have this problem occuring on three
machines in our network now. All after installing IE7.

I have also experienced the same instability since installing IE7.
2 or 3 times a day doesn't seem "occsional" to me. It is irritating. It
seems to me that if I have not shut down windows completely between sessions
it happens. Also, when I attempted to close the window it just happened
again. I submit every error report to Microsoft, but I don't know what good
it does.

Well because I use the PC a lot and I do a lot of tasks on it, in my opinion
2-3 times a day seems 'occasional'.
What I really meant to say is that there's not really a particular pattern
in order to reproduce the error, it pops up on whatever moment and I tend to
say that it occurs more often when the PC is used less (for example when I'm
a couple of minutes on the phone).
>I submit every error report to Microsoft, but I don't know what good
> it does.
I did that like the first 10 times, but now I quit. When I send the error
reports there's an additional Dr. Watson crash and that takes more time (via
alt-ctrl-del)
I hope there's a solution to this specific problem, I'm waiting for Vista
next year and I don't want to reinstall XP from scratch for the time being.

Perry

Hi,
It's possible that a third-party program, toolbar or other browser add-on is
incompatible with IE7. When the Error Reporting window appears, click on the
"To see what data this report contains" link. The first few app names and
module names may point to the program involved.
Also, Event Viewer may provide useful information.
Hope this helps,
Don

I Have it even worse..
my explorer crashes every time.. directly after booting. i can only use the
task manager to run commands...

Oh, Don...Don...Don!
Here's my tail of woe....I'm full-time caregiver to my 3 time stroke
survivor husband. When I've looked at what data was reported all I see is
lots and lots of text I don't understand, nor do I really have a desire (or
time) to dig through everything to find some reason for the problem. I guess
my expectation is that if Microsoft wants me to use a program they will make
it so I don't have to do that.
I feel the same way about Event Viewer. I remember telling an IT person
where I worked once that I don't care about HOW it works....I just care THAT
it works. I'm not a techy and don't want to be!! I hate it when I have to
call tech support and they have me spend an hour trying to find a problem!!!
Just my two cents worth!! But, thanks for your reply - I bet it will help
somebody out there!

Internet Explorer / IE >> Windows Explorer unstable since IE7
Hello Don,
Thanks for your answer. This is what I could get after a crash:
AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 50dc75ff
I'm not convinced that a third-party application could be the reason for the
following reasons (correct me if I'm wrong):
- many users are involved with his exact same problem (they should all have
the same set of third party apps.)
- the problem does not occur especially when IE7 is opened, it can happen
during a simple Windows session (without even opening IE7)
- one of our machines has a "clean" Windows XP installation from scratch
without any add-ons, it has the same problem.
- nothing in the error messages is pointing to a crash or 'hang' in a
specific application or plugin other then explorer.exe
I cannot find information in the event manager about this problem,
unfortunately.
Any other ideas how to isolate this problem?
Thanks

I have found that in many instances getting the program from updates is
not the best way. The best way would be to remove from add/remove
programs and install from www.microsoft.com/ie and save it to the
desktop and then run it. Much more stable

Internet Explorer / IE >> Windows Explorer unstable since IE7
Hi,
> ModName: *unknown*
Well, that's no help. As quakechick has posted, I would uninstall IE7 on one
machine, then download it from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/default.mspx and install it
with antivirus and antispyware programs disabled.
More at http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html
And, I would still be looking for a third-party program, browser add-on or
shell extension.
see if ToolbarCop: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/toolbarcop.htm finds anything
that may not have been obvious.
Try disabling shell extensions with ShellExView
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html See if a shell extension is the
culprit.

Internet Explorer / IE >> Windows Explorer unstable since IE7
Hi,
You can take some troubleshooting steps without investing a lot of time.
Open IE7. Click on Tools, then Manage add-ons. In the "Show" field, select
Add-ons currently loaded. Select and disable all but one. Use IE7 for a day.
Re-enable another add-on. At some point it may become apparent that a
particular add-on is causing the problem. Leave that one disabled or see if
it's been updated.
