Internet Explorer / IE >> IE 7 - Could be much better with minor tweaks
I have switched to IE 7 now, the beta of which is what made me start using
Firefox as a browser as I hated and dispised the UI for IE7 so much. I had
even looked at developing my own UI and using the WebBrowser .net component
to get IE to render the pages.
After finding the tweek to make the menu bar at the top, there are a few
suggestions I have.
1. Allow the user to hide the search bar or move the menubar to the top via
the interface instead of "registry hacks". This is very simple and makes a
missive difference to the user experience. Generally we dont like too much
change forced on us at once, and maintaining the look and feel of
applications is one of the reasons that so many people use Microsoft products.
2. I origionally tried to submit my suggestion via Help>Send Feedback.
Why, oh why does it then direct me to an FAQ with support options. Either
make it do what it says or remove the item. If I wanted Help I would have
looked for a option that says "HELP ME" or "FAQ" or "Troubleshooting".
3. Skinning - a worn out debate and one that the argument I have heard
against skinning has been awful. I am not going to argue the pros and cons
here but my opinion is that skinning could be provided simply and securely.
However what would be an ok alternative would be some built-in skins
including a "classic" skin because I do not like the new "you WILL have this
skin" one.
4. Tabs - Finally IE has tabs, a simple but effective idea. I very much
like the quick tabs feature too. However you cannot close the last tab.
Each tab has a little X on the right-hand side, but when you close all but
one this X dissapears. I can understand some logic to this, but for me it
would be nice if it would then change to a home button if it is the last tab.
It may sound silly, but I really think it would speed up some tasks once
people are used to it. Again this could be somethng that could be turned off
in options.
