Internet Explorer / IE >> selecting "open in new window" from a link doesn't work

I've been using IE7 for months now and it had been working fine. Yesterday,
links quit working in both IE and OE. I did a search, and did the fix here:
http://www.hide-link.com/
...including the part with this:
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome
...and now the links work fine again in OE.

There is still a problem in IE however. I can now right-click on a link and
select "open in new tab" and that once again works fine. However, when I
right-click on a link and select "open in new window" that does not work.
What is even stranger is that if it's a webpage with sound in it, I hear the
sound. It also appears from my modem activity that maybe the page does
open in a new window but this new window is invisible. It cannot be seen
and isn't in the taskbar either. I'm wondering if anyone else has run into
this problem and knows of a fix for it.

Thanks,
Richard

Internet Explorer / IE >> selecting "open in new window" from a link doesn't work Thanks for the reply Don, and for the link. I just tried it with add-ons
disabled and unfortunately, the problem persists.

Internet Explorer / IE >> selecting "open in new window" from a link doesn't work Hi,
Windows XP, right? First try the VBS file at
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm line 240 left side. Next if
necessary try the script on line 164 left side. If either of these produces
a button for the minimized window but the window still can't be seen,
right-click the taskbar and try "cascade." If the window is off the screen
that should get it back onscreen.

Internet Explorer / IE >> selecting "open in new window" from a link doesn't work Sorry Don. Yes, I should have mentioned XP Pro with SP2 and IE7 and
all updates installed.

Thanks much for the link and instructions. I first downloaded and ran the
VBS file at line 240 on the left side from your link and that didn't help.
Then I downloaded and ran the one at line 164 on the left side from your
link and that didn't help either. Both VBS files seemed to run fine but the
problem still persists. I'm convinced that the new window does open and
does load the content when selecting "open in new window" from a link,
but it's still not visible and also still does not show in the taskbar. It
does seem that the window is there but offscreen. I also tried "cascade"
per your suggestion and that didn't help either.

Internet Explorer / IE >> selecting "open in new window" from a link doesn't work OK .Try Ctrl-Alt-Delete> Processes tab. Is nwiz.exe running? If it is,
right-click> End process on it. See if you can open a first and second IE
window. Nwiz.exe has been reported to cause display problems and, while
legitimate, may be unnecessary.
http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/nwiz.exe.html

Or... Internet Options> General> Accessibility, if User style sheet is
checked, uncheck it.

See if the problem continues if you startup in Safe Mode with Networking.

You will be connected to the internet with security programs shutdown. You
should be online only long enough to visit a safe site and try to open a
first and second (new) window. If the problem goes away, a program that
didn't load in Safe Mode is the cause.

Internet Explorer / IE >> selecting "open in new window" from a link doesn't work Thanks much Don, for your reply with more things to check. Unfortunately the
problem still persists.

1) There is no nwiz.exe running in the processes tab of the task manager.

2) I checked the user style sheet and nothing was checked.

3) I booted into safe mode with networking and it does the exact same when
selecting "open in new window" from a link.

I'm running Norton Internet Security 2007 and keep it updated. #3 above
seems to indicate that NIS is not a possible problem. I have not installed
any new programs in a long while so that's not it. The last windows updates
that I installed were on March 15 and they were: KB929399, KB890830 and
KB929338. I don't believe that this problem started until about a week later
so I think the updates are fine.

Right now everything on this PC seems to be working perfectly except for
this one problem. A couple of days before the problem started, I recall
getting one or more script errors on certain news webpages. I don't remember
which sites and didn't pay much attention to the errors, but they were
definitely JavaScript and/or VBScript errors. I clicked the errors away and
all was fine after that. It was a little unusual since I got a script error
on more than one site around that time but I didn't think too much about it
at the time. Don't know if it's related to the problem at hand but thought
I'd mention it since I don't remeber encountering this before. I haven't run
into any of these script errors in more than a week now.

Internet Explorer / IE >> selecting "open in new window" from a link doesn't work Don, I fixed the problem by uninstalling IE7. After I did this and rebooted,
I tried right-clicking a link in IE6 and selecting "open in new window" and
that worked fine in IE6. Next, I reinstalled IE7 and selecting "open in new
window" from a link in IE7 now works once again. This was a simple way to
fix the problem although it doesn't answer the question of why the problem
occured in IE7 in the first place or what the problem really was. I suspect
maybe a registry setting got changed or corrupted but that's only a wild
guess. Anyway, IE7 is working fine again including "open in new window"
from a link.

After reinstalling IE7, I do have a new problem now. About 6 months ago, I
uninstalled MS Java VM. Microsoft will no longer support it after the end of
this year: http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java/ ...and has advised everyone
to move to Sun Java. Without MSJVM and with Sun JRE only, applets will
not run in OE, but do of course still work in IE. I use applets in OE
stationery but have come up with a new method for this. The MSJVM will
become a liability soon enough so it was time to get rid of it.

Last year I did a search and found the MS removal tool to remove MSJVM on
some website that I don't remember. I still have the tool though. It worked
fine for me but I since learned that MS pulled it after its release because
some people had problems with it. Anyway, for months now I've only had Sun
JRE installed. When I uninstalled/reinstalled IE7 a little while ago, the MS
Java VM returned. It now shows in 'Tools' > 'Internet Options' > 'Advanced'
...and definitely was not there for months until this uninstall/reinstall of
IE7 that I just did.

I see another problem now. Before the uninstall/reinstall of IE7 I just did,
I had Sun JRE 1.5.0_11 ...in IE7 'Tools' > 'Internet Options' > 'Advanced'.
Now it shows Sun JRE 1.5.0_09. In add/remove programs, I only see the
Sun JRE 1.5.0_11 with no way to uninstall 1.5.0_09.

I will try to get rid of MSJVM again, hopefully permanently this time, and
will try to get the correct version of Sun JRE showing and will reply back
to let you know the outcome. I appreciate you taking the time to try to help
resolve the "open in new window" IE7 problem that I was having.

Thanks,
Richard

Internet Explorer / IE >> selecting "open in new window" from a link doesn't work Okay, I fixed the Java problem too. Here's what I did.

1) uninstalled Sun JRE 1.5.0_11 in add/remove programs
2) uninstalled IE7
3) found this site: http://www.mvps.org/marksxp/WindowsXP/java.php
and removed Microsoft JVM "The Manual Way". It actually was already
removed by me months ago, but remnants still remained causing it to show in
'Tools' > 'Internet Options' > 'Advanced'.
4) since Sun JRE 1.5.0_09 was still showing in 'Tools' > 'Internet Options'
> 'Advanced' ...but was not in add/remove programs, I also deleted the
registry key for it: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_SUN
5) reinstalled IE7
6) installed Sun JRE 1.5.0_11
7) installed additional windows updates for IE7

I decided to uninstall IE7 first, then get rid of what remained of MSJVM and
then reinstall IE7 so if I ever have to do another uninstall/reinstall of
IE7, the MSJVM would not show in 'Tools' > 'Internet Options' > 'Advanced'.
I'm not certain if that will be the case, but the MSJVM has definitely been
removed, and in fact was months ago despite the misleading entry in 'Tools'
> 'Internet Options' > 'Advanced'.

Now, since I only have Sun Jav, applets only work in IE and not OE as
they would with MSJVM which is fine. What is strange is that after
reinstalling IE7, this key that I deleted:
KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_VM ...is back in the registry although there
is no MS JVM in IE7 'Tools' > 'Internet Options' > 'Advanced'. All files on
the hard drive related to MS JVM still seem to be gone at least.

My original problem in this thread is still fixed by the uninstall/reinstall
of IE7.

Richard

Don, I fixed the problem by uninstalling IE7.

Thanks,
Richard

Thanks much Don, for your reply with more things to check.

Richard

OK .Try Ctrl-Alt-Delete> Processes tab.

315222 - A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=315222
You will be connected to the internet with security programs shutdown. You
should be online only long enough to visit a safe site and try to open a
first and second (new) window. If the problem goes away, a program that
didn't load in Safe Mode is the cause.

Internet Explorer / IE >> selecting "open in new window" from a link doesn't work Hi Richard,

I've been following your thread, and I'm glad you were able to fix your
issue with the uninstall/|reinstall of IE7. I'm also interested in this
issue you've brought up with regard to Applets not working in OE6 with only
the latest Sun Java Virtual Machine installed. I've noticed several posts
in the Stationery news groups about this issue, it seems that as long as you
have both the MS Virtual Machine and the Sun Virtual Machine installed that
Applets work in OE(regardless of which one is set to default), but if you
only have the latest Sun Java Virtual Machine installed then Applets are not
rendered in OE.

I've still got the MS Virtual Machine installed on both my machines as well
as the "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6" package, so I'm not experiencing
any problems with Applets in OE, but those with only the "Java Runtime
Environment (JRE) 6" package are experiencing the problem you've described
with Applets in OE. The only solution seemed to be re-installing the MSJVM,
then regardless of which one is set as the default the Applets are rendered
in OE.

So when you say, "but have come up with a new method for this", are you at
liberty to expound a little more on this?

Does your "new method" mean that the Applet is still rendered in OE with
only the Sun Java Virtual Machine installed, or does it mean you are evoking
a Browser window to display the Applet?

Best Regards,

Donald Anadell

Internet Explorer / IE >> selecting "open in new window" from a link doesn't work Don, when I had to replace my motherboard back in January 2006 and
reinstalled XP and then at first installed Sun Java only, I found that
applets would not work in OE with Sun only, not just some applets in OE, but
all applets in OE as far as I could tell. Then I installed MSJVM and applets
worked again in OE. A few months later I decided since MSJVM was on its way
out, it was time for a new approach and I uninstalled MSJVM permanently.

Basically applets work fine in OE with MSJVM (with or without Sun Java) but
will not work in OE with Sun Java only. If one has MSJVM installed, then
there's absolutely no reason to install Sun Java as far as I can tell. Of
course MS wants its customers to dump MSJVM and move to Sun Java by
year's end.

With Sun Java only installed, one can post a link to an applet webpage or
even use an iframe in the posted (or emailed) stat to display the applet
webpage in OE. Having a script (.htm file) for the applet webpage and the
class/applet/image files on the web is required either way.

As for the new approach for applets, it works as follows: a stat (with our
special script) is posted (or emailed) and the applet
script/class/image/EOT/etc. files are zipped and attached to it (or zipped
and uploaded). Any person viewing the applet stationery unzips the files to
a specific folder (on drive C thru H - viewer's choice) and then the viewer
clicks the open button in the posted (or emailed) stat, and the applet
stationery opens in an IE browser window. Of course it then works later,
months later, offline, etc. and the poster doesn't even need webspace. It's
not so different from clicking an open button and opening a popup, but yes,
the applet stationery is displayed in a browser window.

Anyway, this special script works with all windows updates installed and has
tested well for months. We expect to have it on our website available for
download within 3 or 4 weeks but that's only a guess. This special 'IE
opener' script will not only work fine with our applet scripts (which may
not be used in a webpage anyway), but also works fine with <t:audio in
time2+html for example when it's in the stat opened in IE from OE. Actually,
it will also work with applet scripts by others as well.

This approach is different and won't be everyone's cup of tea, but it's the
direction that Michaela and I have decided to go with our applet scripts.

Regards,
Richard

Internet Explorer / IE >> selecting "open in new window" from a link doesn't work OK Richard, and thanks for the feedback. I think I see where you are headed
with your new method. My guess is that most folks in the Stationery
community will probably want to hang on to their MSJVM, even after it's
support life ends on Dec 31 of this year:) Of course that would leave one
exposed to a possible security threat, although I don't don't know of any
attempts to exploit the MSJVM since the release of Build 3810 a few years
back.

All the best to you and M,

Donald Anadell

Internet Explorer / IE >> selecting "open in new window" from a link doesn't work Hi,
Glad you got the new window problem resolved.

Regarding the Java version in Internet Options> Advanced... The solution
that comes to mind is to uninstall Sun Java then delete the Java folder at
C:\Program Files\Java before reinstalling Java.

Internet Explorer / IE >> selecting "open in new window" from a link doesn't work Thanks Don for your help and suggestions. Yes, that wouldn't hurt to delete
the folder before reinstalling Java. It seems like when one uninstalls IE7,
it's like going back to a restore point and there may be some old registry
keys. This one:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_SUN
...showed the older Sun JRE 1.5.0_09 and I deleted this key from the
registry which probably wasn't necessary since I reinstalled the later Sun
JRE version after reinstalling IE7. Anyway, everything is working fine now.

I still don't understand why this key that I deleted:
KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_VM ...was added back in the registry when
I reinstalled IE7. There is no MS JVM in IE7 'Tools' > 'Internet Options' >
'Advanced' and all files on the hard drive related to MS JVM are gone too.
All works fine now so I guess I won't worry about it.

Richard

Internet Explorer / IE >> selecting "open in new window" from a link doesn't work Yes Don, I agree that MSJVM will probably be used by many in stationery
for years to come, and hopefully it will remain safe to use. I think it's
the better Java of the 2. Of course if someone with only Sun Java can't see
an applet in OE, they will be told to install MSJVM. I'm staying with
Microsoft's plan to phase out MSJVM in favor of Sun, as well as using only
the absolute minimum IE/OE changes for viewing stationery.

Regards,
Richard

OK Richard, and thanks for the feedback.
