Internet Explorer / IE >> Shortcomings in IE 7.0 Layout

Comments for Microsoft: Overall the new IE 7 interface lacks human factors
design consideration - the ability to customize the interface.

1. Tool Bars: The overwhelming response to the inadequate layout tells it
all. Change for the sake of change serves no useful purpose. Moving the
Menu and address bar are two examples. Locking them in place and requiring
the user to do a registry hack is unsatisfactory. The Address bar or
"command line" what I like to call it, should be nearest the browsing area.

2. The Tabs serve little purpose. Although a novice can keep multiple
pages available, this function could be performed in previous version by
right clicking and opening the link in a new window. Essentially, the Tabs
are separate instances of IE on the Taskbar. Of course, if one chooses to
group similar items on the Taskbar, this makes the navigation harder.
Another issue with the Tabs in the problem of where it place the new Tab. If
the first Tab is the main search page (say Google), then each subsequent tab
(opened from the main page) opens next to that first Tab as Tab #2 instead of
putting it on the far right in chronological opening order. This is
dysfunctional embedding of Tabs making it hard to determine the newest opened
Tab.

3. Finally, my IE 6 interface is about as simple as it gets and there is
more screen space than IE 7. It is basic 3 line at the top with no fluff
from any other provider. Who needs a Google bar anywayâ?¦a simple click from
Favorite in a new IE window.

4. Unrelated, but important. Many users await the re-introduction of the
Microsoft Office Toolbar. Please bring that handy function back...or at
least give the user the option of adding it. Options to the user are the
key. We all are entitled to our opinions and customize for personal
productivity.
