Internet Explorer / IE >> Link clicks not responding in IE7

Installed IE7 a week or so ago, on WinXP Home, SP2, all
updates/antivirus/malware updated & OK. (I've been searching for answers -
already tried that before I get that standard response - and in the process
experienced the problem - clicking on links and I hear a click, but nothing
happens.)
Even had trouble getting this window to come up, with popups prevention
disabled. Had to try a couple of times before I actually got this New
Question window.
Been trying to Christmas shop, and general surfing. At some point, clicks
to move further (or pay for items) no longer respond. I hear the click,
sometimes nothing happens, sometimes it says Done but I have no change in
display or a blank IE window.
Do I need to change some Security or other settings, or are there other
things I can do, besides give up & uninstall 7 and go back to 6?
Thanks.

Internet Explorer / IE >> Link clicks not responding in IE7 1. Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode? To start
IE7 in No Add-ons mode:

Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons; or

Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No
add-ons).

Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer?s (No Add-ons) Mode:

2. Does the problem persist if you Reset IE7 Settings (RIES)?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 <= Read before using!

3. If you uninstall (a) IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6), (b)
all toolbars and (c) all third-party Windows Themes (including Window
Blinds) and do NOT reinstall IE7, does this behavior persist? If not, do
NOT reinstall IE7.

4. Required reading IMHO before reinstalling IE7:

Sandi's Installation Tips <= FOLLOW THESE TIPS TO THE LETTER!

[And I strongly recommend using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.]

Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after
reinstalling IE7 to install any critical updates offered. If Optional
Updates category offers Root Certificates update, I recommend installing it
to take full advantage of IE7's additional security.
