Internet Explorer / IE >> WMP11/IE7/Vista & MP3 issues/behaviours

I, like many, am experiencing issues with MP3 playback from HTTP links.

First off, most direct links to MP3's don't work. They give a "404 not
found" error.

I've read that you can change the association to smack it back to Windows
Media Player, but there's 2 problems with this:

1) There is no "Save File As:" dialog prompt so that you can save the file.
This is especially bad for HTTP links in emails (I use Office Outlook's RSS
Reader too), so you can't click and save a file, which is especially
important for audio RSS feeds, because I'd like to download and sync the
MP3's to my Windows Mobile Smartphone from my desktop.

2) It doesn't progressively download within Windows Media Player, which is
the default behaviour of WMP11 (and previous versions) on XP. What this
means is that you have to wait for the entire file to download before
playback begins. On a side note, it's just ugly to look at.

So is there some way of editing the registry to change the behaviour for
MP3's in Windows Vista to match the default method in XP? Vista's "Default
Programs" function doesn't seem to be the answer.
