Internet Explorer / IE >> Compuserve email and Internet Explorer

Two weeks ago I stopped being able to access my Compuserve email account when
using Internet Explorer. IE doesn't let me sign in to my account. When I try,
it keeps sending me back to the sign in page.

The Compuserve phone help line told me that the latest update of Internet
Explorer doesn't recognize Compuserve email. They said someone was working on
it, and in the meantime I could access my email by using a different browser,
like Mozilla or the Compuserve browser.

I switched to the Compuserve browser, and it lets me access my email just
fine. The only problems I have are when I try to access it through Internet
Explorer. As far as I know, I hadn't changed anything about Compuserve, IE,
or my system. Just one day it worked as well as always, and the next day it
didn't. (Are there automatic upgrades that change my software without my
knowledge, even if I don't want them to?)

I have kept checking back to see if the problem has been fixed, but it's
still not working. I'm running IE 6.0 on Windows XP, using a cable modem. I
have tried deleting cookies and history. Nothing has worked so far.

I am getting used to using Compuserve as my main browser, and if necessary I
can give up using Internet Explorer permanently. But I would like to retrieve
the addresses from my email address book. Any suggestions?

- Kris

Not an answer, but hey! I started with CompuServe back in the mid
eighties - I didn't know it still existed....

Internet Explorer / IE >> Compuserve email and Internet Explorer Hi Kris,

The usual reason why some sites do not recognise IE7, is that their web
sites have not been made IE7 ready(some sites read the version number of the
browser that is visiting their sites and incorrectly determine the version
of IE7 as something else).

You did not mention your operating system (XP or Vista) but you could try
either

The Microsoft UserAgent String Utility
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9517DB9C-3C0D-47FE-BD04-FAD82A9AAC9F&displaylang=en

or
IE7Pro
http://www.ie7pro.com

Both of these tools allow you to change (cloak) the version number of IE7 to
fool those web sites you visit that do not recognise the version number of
IE7.
I have not tested either of these products on Vista, so I am unable to
comment.
Perhaps it would be best to contact compuserve support again and ask their
opinion.... though I suspect that their support will be unaware that these
solutions are available.
I thought compuserve was part of the AOL group, and would have recommended
the AOL browser as a substitute.

Regards.

What if you right click the IE icon on the desktop and choose Start Without
Add-ons?
Or go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet
Explorer (No Add-ons).

Internet Explorer / IE >> Compuserve email and Internet Explorer Hi Rob,

Thanks for responding. Actually, I'm not running IE7, as I mentioned when I
said, "I'm running IE 6.0 on Windows XP". And I don't want to replace IE6
with IE7 until I can retrieve my address book. And I can't retrieve my
address book because I can't log into my email account. Is there another way
to retrieve the info in my address book without logging in?

I miss the good old days of DOS, when everything was on my own hard drive. I
could retrieve whatever I wanted, without being subject to the whims of
corporations who think they know what I want better than I do.

... but enough of my short rant. Thanks for the info, and if I can get my
email address book back, I may give IE7 a try.

- Kris

Internet Explorer / IE >> Compuserve email and Internet Explorer Hi Frank,

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, I tried getting rid of all the Add-Ons,
and still had the same problem.

Oh well. I'm getting used to the Compuserve browser anyway. I appreciate you
responding!

In IE go to Tools | Internet Options | Advanced. Scroll down to the bottom
and Reset IE.

If your "address book" is being maintained by the web site
it shouldn't make any difference whether IE6 or IE7 (spoofing MSIE 6.0)
or Firefox, etc. is used.

> Is there another way to retrieve the info in my address book without logging in?

What do you mean by "retrieve" it? Why can't the the Compuserve browser do that?

Also, why won't Compuserve help you since you are not (yet) using
the version of IE that they claim is incompatible?

In any case you might try working through this troubleshooter

<title>How to troubleshoot situations where you cannot complete MSN sign-up
or connect to SSL secured (128-Bit) Web sites by using Internet Explorer in Windows XP</title>

Good luck

Try changing your homepage from MSN.com to something else like www.google.com
and close the browser, reopen and then check your mail on www.cs.com.
There seems to be an issue with cs mail if you have msn set as your
homepage. Sorry for the double post if it sent two.
