Internet Explorer / IE >> notifications link in email

Hello,

I am having a strange page come up when I click the link (in hotmail) where
it says "to continue receiving notifications of this thread" and it does not
take me to the forums.

It says <?xmlversion="1.0"
encoding="utf-8"?>
</root>
<status>1<status>
</root>

Most of the page is blank.

I was wondering if this is any cause for concern, and what I should do. I
have IE7 Beta 2, and windows xp pro. Not sure when this started, or if it
was after I put in the IE 7 or not.

Thanks for any help.

Browser: IE *must* be chosen here if you're running IE7 Beta 2 and want such
links to work.

Internet Explorer / IE >> notifications link in email YW. FWIW it seems that some other Hotmail users have been experiencing the
same problem. Try the following and see if the behavior persists:

1. Uninstall IE7 Beta 2 via Add/Remove Programs (automatically returns you
to IE6 SP1).

2. If you're using Windows Mail beta, opt-out and return to the default
Hotmail configuration.

3. Change the email address for Notifications to a non-Hotmail account.

4. Disable all Add-ons (IE Tools > Manage Add-ons > ...).

Internet Explorer / IE >> notifications link in email Hi PA Bear,

The situation stopped all by itself. So, no problem. Also, FWIW, the IE7
(or any IE for that matter) is not even listed in the add remove programs.
And I am not using a beta email. Thanks for the reply.

Internet Explorer / IE >> notifications link in email YW. Thanks for posting back.

IE Help > About: What version is listed here (e.g., v7.0.5296.x)?

Add/Remove Programs: If you check Show Update box, is IE7 listed? If so,
you're running an earlier beta build. You must uninstall it via Add/Remove
Programs before you can install the newest build (v.7.0.5346.5).

Uninstalling IE7 Beta2 Preview (v7.0.5296.x):

Before proceeding, please read! =>
http://msmvps.com/blogs/spywaresucks/archive/2006/03/21/87123.aspx

1. First try uninstalling via Add/Remove Programs. (Tip: Make sure Show
Updates box is checked.)

If IE7 isn't found there, try the following which is based on the notes of
MVP Sandi Hardmeier:

2. Run the commandline

%windir%\$NtUninstallie7bet2p$\spuninst\spuninst.exe

or

3. Go to the key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

Right click on Internet Explorer > New String Value > Name that value
InstalledByUser (the value of the new String should be your User Account
name) > Uninstall IE7 via Add/Remove Programs and reboot *twice*.

Some software (for example CCleaner) deletes uninstaller directories such as
$NtUninstallie7bet2$ (or $NtUninstallie7bet2p$, for IE7 Beta2 Preview). If
the $NtUninstallie7bet2p$ folder is empty, or has been deleted completely,
whether by third party software or manually to preserve disk space, you will
*not* be able to remove the Beta 2 Preview via Add/Remove Programs or the
commandline. If running System Restore does not resolve the situation for
you, then your only choice is to stay with the Preview, or format your PC
and install Windows anew. You will not be able to install any future builds
of IE7 while Beta 2 Preview is installed, nor will you be able to run a
Repair Install of XP.

Required reading IMHO before installing IE7 Beta2 (v7.0.5346.5):

Sandi's Known Issues & Uninstall/Install Tips
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html

IE7 B2 Release Notes
http://msdn.microsoft.com/ie/releasenotes/default.aspx

From the latter:
<QP>
Do not reinstall any version of Microsoft Windows in any way after you
install Internet Explorer 7. Do not upgrade in place or upgrade to a new
edition. The workaround is to remove Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2, install
operating system updates, and then reinstall Internet Explorer.

Internet Explorer / IE >> notifications link in email Thanks PA. It looks like I have the newest version, and the problem went
away by itself, like I mentioned. Now I do see the IE 7 listed in the add
remove programs, and I always did have the show updates checked. Don't know
why it wasn't there before. Since all seems to be ok, I will just leave all
as it is. Your reply is more complex than something what I would want to try
anyway, as I am not a computer profressional. Thanks for your help.
