Searching the old-fashioned way in IE7?

Internet Explorer33
Plain and simple, I do very much like the ability to have a search results

pane on one side of the display and have the site(s) I then select open in

another pane (a la IE6). I don't care one way or the other whether it opens

the site in a new tab, new window, etc., only that I can see the search

results list on one side of the screeen--that stays there--and then have the

sites open up on the other as they are picked.

Will it be possible to duplicate this functionality in IE7?

Thanks.

Hi Fletch62,

Don't know if this is what you mean, but its not obvious.

On the Advanced tab of Internet Options you will find an option to enable

web sites to use the search pane. (requires a restart)

Getting IE7 to display the search panel is another matter (I can't seem to

find the button or tools menu option and the IE6 shortcut ctrl+e is being

used elsewhere in v7)

You can find a small selection of US Search Providers for side bar searching

from my site at

www.iecustomzier.com/USENEBarsDownload.htm" >www.iecustomzier.com/USENEBarsDownload.htm

First enable the search pane in IE7 before installing.

Re:Searching the old-fashioned way in IE7?

Hi again Fletch,

I just did some IE7 testing on the side-search bar and it is a bit buggy. It

appears that 'enable web sites to use the search pane' means exactly that

and that client scripting does not work for the downloads I mentioned

previously.

You can go to www.iecustomizer.com/iepanels/" >www.iecustomizer.com/iepanels/ and select from the

listing of search side bars I have there (enable the side search bar first)

but the search provider that you choose will not be persistant and you will

have to revisit the page each time you wish to use the side bar search.

Another problemo with the IE7 side search bar and other Explorer bars is

that right clicking on a link in an explorer bar and choosing 'Open in a new

tab' opens it in a new IE7 window instead.

Hopefully Beta n*2 will be betta

Regards.

Re:Searching the old-fashioned way in IE7?

The "plain and simple" way to do it is to simply right-click on the search

result and select either "open in a new tab" or "open in a new window".

Re:Searching the old-fashioned way in IE7?

Thanks for the responses Rob and Darrell.

Darrell: I take from Rob's responses that, at least for the time being, a

workable search sidebar is not in the cards. The functionality as it exists

in IE6 cannot be functionally duplicated.

In IE7, I search and the results are displayed in tab1, I would then right

click on a site from the search list and ask IE7 to open a new tab. Once I

do that, it will open a tab2 with that site. To get back to the search

results, I would go back to tab1. The search results would still be there.

Is this correct? If I want to go to a different site from the search list, I

would right click again on a site from tab1 and it would open tab3 (unless I

closed tab2) and so on. Is this correct?

My main concern is how this will work and if my assumptions above are right,

then I at least know how things will be. However, am I missing something

obvious? I think I must be--and I'm not saying that sarcastically. It seems

to me that the sidebar pane method used in IE6 is far simpler for the average

user than what is and forever will be in IE7. The reviews of IE7 are

extremely positive and no one seems to view the change in search methodology

to be an issue. Granted, most people using Beta versions of software are on

the leading edge, but I'm sure Microsoft has done their homework. Please,

and I'm asking this seriously, tell me where I'm wrong.

Thanks.

To be honest with you Will, I never really used tab browsing in IE6. Since

I've been using IE7, starting with IE7B2, I use tabbed browsing all the time

now. I've updated to IE7B3 and it has worked for me without issue. Another

thing that I like about tab browsing is the "Quick tabs view". From here you

will be presented with a page that will display all your opened tabs. IE7B3

is a far superior browser to IE6 and once you get use to it, I think you will

feel the same way...Take the tour of the new features if you haven't already.
