Thanks for the responses Rob and Darrell.
Darrell: I take from Rob's responses that, at least for the time being, a
workable search sidebar is not in the cards. The functionality as it exists
in IE6 cannot be functionally duplicated.
In IE7, I search and the results are displayed in tab1, I would then right
click on a site from the search list and ask IE7 to open a new tab. Once I
do that, it will open a tab2 with that site. To get back to the search
results, I would go back to tab1. The search results would still be there.
Is this correct? If I want to go to a different site from the search list, I
would right click again on a site from tab1 and it would open tab3 (unless I
closed tab2) and so on. Is this correct?
My main concern is how this will work and if my assumptions above are right,
then I at least know how things will be. However, am I missing something
obvious? I think I must be--and I'm not saying that sarcastically. It seems
to me that the sidebar pane method used in IE6 is far simpler for the average
user than what is and forever will be in IE7. The reviews of IE7 are
extremely positive and no one seems to view the change in search methodology
to be an issue. Granted, most people using Beta versions of software are on
the leading edge, but I'm sure Microsoft has done their homework. Please,
and I'm asking this seriously, tell me where I'm wrong.
Thanks.

The "plain and simple" way to do it is to simply right-click on the search
result and select either "open in a new tab" or "open in a new window".
