Internet Explorer / IE >> problem with internet explorer

Hi.

Lately I appear to be having a problem with internet explorer and I
have no idea how to solve it.
I use IE 6 under win XP pro and recently had to re-install all my
software because of a HD crash. Now IE is behaving rather odd. For
instance, a website like www.m-w.com that I often use refuses to load.
When I open the page, it loads fine, but when I enter a word to look it
up, it takes an extremely long time to load. It will first display the
top part of the page in a few seconds, then it waits for a few minutes
(normally webpages completely load in a few seconds) and then finally
the complete webpage is displayed..
I'm quite sure the problem is not with www.m-w.com since I have the
same problem on other websites. Strangely, I don't seem to be having
this problem with all websites though (groups.google.com is working
fine for instance).

Kind regards and thanks in advance for any suggestions, Niek

Internet Explorer / IE >> problem with internet explorer Hi,
First clear the Temporary Internet Files and set the size of the Temporary
Internet Files folder to 50-60 MB.

Next, troubleshoot this by disabling third-party programs, toolbars, BHOs
(Browser Helper Object) or other add-ons to IE. See if you can determine
that one of these programs is causing the problem.
Look at:
IE> Tools> Manage add-ons.
MSCONFIG> Startup.
Control Panel> Add or remove programs.
* Important: Turn on the Windows Firewall, from Control Panel or Security
Center, before disabling a third-party firewall.

Or, less likely, but this may be a malware problem.

Tried this, didn't make any difference.

I've disabled all add-ons, but that didn't make any difference either.

Scanning with Spybot S&D and AdAware didn't seem to help either.
Maybe I'll still try some of the links you've suggested, but surely
malware or spyware is unlikely to be the problem if spybot S&D and
adaware are unable to detect any problems?

Internet Explorer / IE >> problem with internet explorer Hi,
The bottom half of the results page at m-w.com is largely Google ads. Do you
have a third-party ad-blocking program installed?

Don't think so. I thought that the ads might be the cause and I turned
of IE protection
in spywareblaster, but that didn't make any difference. I have no idea
what other program might be blocking ads.

Internet Explorer / IE >> problem with internet explorer Hi,
Try this test *very* briefly because you'll be running with security
programs shutdown...
Startup in Safe Mode with Networking.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=315222
Try www.m-w.com If the problem goes away, a program that didn't load in Safe
Mode is causing it.

Or, might help- can't hurt...
Try deleting the Temporary Internet Files folder for the affected user
account. A new folder will be created on restart. Login as another user with
administrator privileges, or from the machine's default administrator
account (startup in safe mode.) Make sure that you can see hidden and system
files (Folder Options> View) Then delete the affected TIF folder from
Windows Explorer. It will be at [C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local
Settings\Temporary Internet Files] Restart.

I've tried this and indeed, in safe mode, www.m-w.com loads without
problems.
Is there any easy way to selectively enable and disable all the
programs that load in normal mode to figure out which one of them is
causing the problem?

I deleted all temporary internet files from the folder you mentioned,
but that didn't seem to make any difference.

Start | Run (Win key + R) and type
msconfig
and press <Enter>. Go to the Startup tab.

Any likely suspects visible here in this screenshot?

I would uncheck all of them and restart. If things work properly begin
rechecking them in small groups until you identify the culprit.
