Default mail client in IE7

Internet Explorer40
I use Office 2003 (including OL 2003) and use OL 2003 as my mail server. I

am using IE 7.0.5730.13 and have several times clicked on a weblink to send

an email on a web-page I am viewing within IE7. I get the following error

message. "Could not perform this operation because the default mail client

is not properly installed." Because of this, within IE7 I clicked on

Tools/Internet Options/Programs and found that next to "Email" it had

Microsoft Outlook.

Can someone tell me how to fix this error in sending email through clicking

in IE7?

Thank you in advance.

Bob

Re:Default mail client in IE7

PA Bear, I have OL set as the default mail program both within IE

Tools/Options/Programs and Control Panel/Internet Options/Programs (which I

think is the same place with 2 roads to it). Is that what you meant by your

question?

I also did a detect and rapair within OL 2003. I did a search in Google

Groups and noticed that you asked someone in the past who seemed to have

this problem the following question.

Did you install Windows Live Mail and then decide against using it?

I did indeed install Windows Live Messenger and do not have it running much

of the time. Is this part of the problem? If so, I would prefer to use MSN

messenger, which is what I thought I was installing at the time, since their

icons look similar.

What can I do?

A1. No, I was referring to the default for Email in Start | Settings |

Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Set Program Access and Defaults.

A2. Sorry, I forgot about the Windows Live Mail situation. I'd recommend

uninstalling Windows Live Mail via Add/Remove Programs, which will not

affect the functionality of Windows Live Messenger v8.x.

consider this a lesson learned: Resolve to pay closer attention when

Assuming WinXP

Windows Explorer | Tools |Folder Options | File Types

If it sorted by extension then up among the (NONE) group is URL:MailTo

Protocol. Make sure it points to Outlook, although if you have automatic

updates turned on and set to Microsoft Updates instead of Windows Updates

that should happen automatically whenever Outlook is updated.

Frank,

Sorry for not mentioning I use WinXP (SP2). In the [None] group, I have no

URL:MailTo Protocol. Perhaps this is at least part of my problem. How do I

create such an entry?

Re:Default mail client in IE7

A1 Thanks, I had not looked there. Currently it is set for "Custom", which

means default email program is "Use my current email program". Do I need to

switch the overall setting to "Microsoft Windows"? In that case, for

default email program it gives the 2 choices of "Use my current Microsoft

email program" or Outlook Express. In either case, it says below the

drop-down window "Enable Outlook Express". Since I use OL 2003, not Outlook

Express, I would assume that I should leave it as is "Use my current email

program" or switch to "Use my current Microsoft email program". Is that

right? Which is best?

A2 In "Add or Remove Programs" I find "Windows Live Installer" and "Windows

Live Messenger". I do not find "Windows Live Mail" per se. What

specifically should I uninstall? Thank you for taking me through the steps.

I obviously jumped too fast with installing this thing in the first place.

Re:Default mail client in IE7

(I've read your recent exchange with Frank, Bob.)

I have no idea why Windows Live Mail isn't listed in Add/Remove Programs,

assuming it's installed, but I don't think you're going to have Outlook as a

default Mail Client option until you get it uninstalled, Bob.

As for the appropriate section in Set Program Access and Defaults (i.e.,

Computer Manufacturer; MS Windows; Non-Microsoft; Custom) in which you

should be selecting the default for Email, choose the section that's already

checked/enabled.

All that being said, I honestly think you'd be best off trying to resolve

this mess in either Outlook General newsgroup

(news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.outlook.general) or Windows

Live Mail newsgroup

(news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop).

Best of luck and please let us know how you make out.

Re:Default mail client in IE7

[crossposted to OL General and WLMail]

So just changing IE's default for Mail (in Programs tab) to something other

than OL and then changing it back to OL fixed it, even after (re)setting OL

as your default for Mail in Set Program Access and Defaults and after

jumping through all the hoops at

Re:Default mail client in IE7

Yes, that is exactly how it all went down and all it took in the end. Thank

you for your kind words. It made me feel really good about coming back and

sharing the fruit of my stuggles. I love helping others, as you so so often

here and in other newsgroups Robear. Thanks again.

Hi Robear - that "fix" is well known over here in the Outlook groups.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. All

unsolicited mail sent to my personal account will be deleted without

I use Office 2003 (including OL 2003) and use OL 2003 as my mail server. I

am using IE 7.0.5730.13 and have several times clicked on a weblink to send

an email on a web-page I am viewing within IE7. I get the following error

message. "Could not perform this operation because the default mail client

is not properly installed." Because of this, within IE7 I clicked on

Tools/Internet Options/Programs and found that next to "Email" it had

Microsoft Outlook.

Can someone tell me how to fix this error in sending email through clicking

in IE7?

Thank you in advance.
