Error 80040256 - tried everything

I have reinstalled the soundcard off the original setup CD, downloaded the most recent version of WMP, checked the settings in control panel, and tried every other "fix" that has been suggested. Still, when clicking a link to play a .wav file, I get this error message. The error message is off the older version WMP. Is there a way I can get it where it doesn't try to pull it off the old version? The updated version does work if I open it separately. Help!
