heart set on MCE - (UK) but...

Media Player114
I have a couple of questions.

1. We only watch sky digital - can I programme MCE to record programmes in

advance with sky ? can it select the channel etc.

2. Is it possible to keep recorded programmes by recording them to DVD - and

can they be played on a set top dvd player.

3. For some reason TV-out is weird on my tv - it seems to use composite - is

it possible to use a scart cable to hook the mce up like I would my xbox ?

ps thanks in advance for any advice

MCE will "override" Sky's planner. MCE has its own in built guide that you

use instead of Sky's. Unfortunately therefore you can't use the Sky remote

& guide.

You can record shows to DVD but in order to watch them on a DVD Player you

will need to use Sonic Primetime (which is £50 from www.sonic.com).

MCE PC's (in their majority) cannot accept a scart input. You would need to

buy a convertor that changes the scart connection to S-Video or to another

Composite output.

Thanks for the reply, does this mean I can hook sky up to my MCE PC and

select what I want to record across a range of channels and the system does

the rest ?

I am now clutching at my credit card as this seems much more favourable to a

DVD recorder :)

Yeah that is correct.

Remember that you can only record/watch 1 channel at a time (unlike Sky+)

Yes David MCE will change the Sky channel using an IR blaster (a device that

sits just in front of your Sky box).

I have MCE with Sky running through a plasma, all works

fine and records SKY programs - this is done with the

channel changer that comes connected to the infrared

remote receiver. The MCE downloads all sky's programs

(14days worth i think) and you can record programs as and

when. Personally i think it is better than tivo and

cheaper!!! as is free!

yes from the remote...

Um not too sure, The plasma i use has seperate

connections so this is not an issue. FYI MCE looks very

good on the plasma.I use the tv out from SKY into MCE,

then SVGA out to the plasma. There are convertors

around...

hope this helps

You would only be able to watch PC-DVD's from Media Center.

I think what David wants is to be able to record DVD's and then take them to

another DVD player to watch and this can only be done by using Primetime.

Only Primetime will allow you to do this David.

There are other options besides Primteime.

If all you want to do is dump a programme to DVD to watch at a future date as in

the past you would have used a VHS tape then Primetime is the simplest & most

foolproof solution to use.

If you want to be more fancy then Sonic MyDVD will allow you to author DVDs with

menus, edit out commercials etc etc. It is also possible to use a freeware tool

to extract the MPEG2 files from the recorded Microsoft proprietary format & then

use any other DVD editing/authoring package.

I believe that this does not work on MCE 2004 (only MCE v1).

It certainly does work on MCE 2004.

Please tell me which freeware application does this and supports MCE2004

then Nigel.

I can assure you that DVREdit doesn't yet do dvr-ms to MPEG conversion and

when I last tried (a while back I must admit) the dvr-ms to MPEG2 ripper (by

Luis) didn't support MCE2004 files (used to just error).

Maybe I only tried it on one of my corrupt dvr-ms' - I don't know but I've

not had any luck with it thats all..

I know that DVREdit doesn't do DVR-MS->MPEG2 conversion (in fact from reading

between the lines of the author's posting recently it will never do this).

However the DVR-MS Ripper by Luis does work. Just yesterday I used it to extract

the MPEG2 files & author a DVD after Primetime barfed on the file. That's why I

was so emphatic that it does work on MCE2004.
