- MediaPlayer >> Windows Media codecsHi!
When Microsoft is introducing so many enhancements in the new versions of
Windows Media Player (especially 10 and 11), why does it not include a codec
to play DVDs and .avi files?
It is cumbersome to find codecs from various sites. And also, if there is a
facility in the Player to update, why does that not detect and install the
missing codecs?
This is a frustrating experience.
Shall be grateful for a reply / solution to this.

- Media Center >> Application Failure overlay after downloading new Media Center Update and DRMHi,
I downloaded latest Media Center Update KB914548 and DRM KB913800 through
Microsoft update and after restaring the machine I have following problem
with Media Center.
I start Live TV on ATSC and after several seconds I get Application failure.
Restarting the machine doesn't help me.
Live TV was working before I updated my computer, I had only Video error
overlay several times a week, but changing channel always resolved the
problem and sometimes Tuner Not Available overlay, but I'd like to return my
machine to previous state, because I was still able to get Live TV after
some troubleshooting. After update it looks like I'm not going to have TV.
When I uninstalled Media Center Update and DRM I have still the same problem
with application failure. It looks like not all files were uninstalled.
How could I resolve this issue? I really cannot afford to reinstall my
machine, because it would take a month to install and configure all
applications). Should I uninstall Rollup 2 and install it again with other 2
updates (KB908250 and KB912067)?
I'll appreciate some fast solution, because I don't have standard TV set,
only my computer.
Thanks.

- Media Center >> Disk Full - Say What?I haven't seen the "Disk Full" error in a while, but it showed itself again
this past weekend. When it shows, pressing the "Live TV" button on the MCE
remote always brings back live TV.
I have MCE 2005 with all the latest auto-updates. The OS disk on this
computer is 60GB with about 70% free. There is a separate 300GB disk for
recorded TV that is always full. Yes, under normal MCE operating conditions,
the Recorded TV disk is ALWAYS FULL!!
I never delete recorded programs, but let MCE "keep until space needed".
Therefore, during normal MCE operation, the recorded programs disk drive will
quickly become full and remain full, until MCE deletes the oldest recorded
programs as needed.
This error message is really stating the wrong thing. Since the Recorded TV
disk is *always full*, it seems to be reporting that MCE is having some sort
of problem deleting recorded programs.
Does anyone know if this seemingly ongoing bug has been addressed in any MCE
updates?
Interestingly, right after dispatching the "Disk Full" message by pressing
"Live TV" on the remote, I went to recorded TV and scrolled down to the
oldest recordings. I noticed that the oldest recording had a "(!)"
(exclamation mark in a circle graphic) with text indicating that recording
would be deleted that same day. It would seem that MCE is getting confused!!
This "Disk Full" error seems to be getting generated by a poorly designed
and/or implemented algorithm for keeping track of free space for recorded TV.
The strange part is that MCE only intermittently produces this error.

- Media Center >> ICS problemI have a hub that connects to my modem and has multiple machines connected to
it. I need to enable internect connection sharing (ICS) and every source i go
to for information on how to do it tells me to go to the Network Connections
in the Control Panel and then to the advanced tab in the properties of my
connection. There, i am supposed to check a box that says "Allow other users
to use this internet connection" or something along those lines. However,
when i follow these instructions i find i have no such box. I use Windows XP
Professional Service Pack 2. Is this a problem with my computer or is there
something i missed?

- MediaPlayer >> Windows Media Player Won't play anythingWindows media player wont play anything at all. It starts up fine if you just
open the player, but if you open it by clicking a file, it errors. The error
reporter is no help at all, and i have reported it about 10 times now with no
help or anything after the report. All of the other media players (winamp,
sonic, real..etc) will only play mp3s but get about the same message when i
try to play vids. I have no clue how to fix this, and it would be one heck of
a pain in the behind to re-install all the stuff i have on this thing,
especially the games (half life 2, 1, and all the other steam-related crap)
with dialup. Plus its a huge pain to download all the updates again. I'm
supposed to be good at all this computer stuff, and managed to fix most of my
other problems, but this one has me stumped. Oh, and re-installing all the
players didnt help either. I think i screwed it up after a rousing game of
garry's mod on dialup lagged so bad i had to restart. Last time i had a game
lag like that i DID have to re-install, but i was hoping to get around it
this time.. Thanks if anyone wants to help..

- Media Center >> Dual Tuners in Vista- Running Vista Ultimate x86bit
I've just purchased this: Hauppauge WinTV Nova-TD Dual DVB-T Tuner - Model
1175.
It's connected to my PC via USB, and I've run a TV cable from the outlet on
the wall, through a splitter, and then a cable into each of the two antenna
sockets on the actual USB tuner.
I've gone through the TV set up in MCE and there's nothing wrong with the
channel detection, picture etc, it just hasn't detected the dual tuners so I
don't have its capabilities (obviously - record and watch two channels at the
same time, record and record etc). I've downloaded and installed the vista
drivers for this product.
I was running MCE 2005 on my old machine with a Hauppauge dual tuner card
and it detected the dual tuners fine but I can't remember if i had to do
something.
Any help would be great, thanks a lot.

- MediaPlayer >> Varying Audio Playback SpeedIn response to Chris, thank you for your replay, but
changing acceleration settings doesn't seem to apply to
audio files. The Microsoft.com site does advertise that
manual control of playback speed is possible by selecting
the View menu, clicking Enhancements and selecting
Playback Speed from the options. I understand that this
only applies to supported file types such
as .wma, .wmv, .mp3, etc. I have tried this on 3 machines
all equipped with WMP9, only to net the same result in
each case - any ideas?

MediaPlayer >> WMP - just reloads each time I close it down
I have recently encountered a problem with Windows Media Player. It will
automatically start and when I close it, it just restarts. This is quite
annoying and is also interferring with all my other programs. I have
struggled to uninstall it and thought I had it (took forever because the
program was constantly running) but it is still there. HELP!

MediaPlayer >> WMP - just reloads each time I close it down
Hi Hector's Mom,
I would have to think that something is causing it to launch as Media
Player doesn't have "automatic relaunch code".
A thought: Do you have a keyboard that has a multimedia button? If
something is pressing this button down, or it's stuck down, that will keep
relaunching Media Player.

Thanks!

MediaPlayer >> WMP - just reloads each time I close it down
Media Player doesn't just launch by itself, something has to be launching the
program.
Does it just come up or does it launch and play something?
Have you installed any new software? What's in your system tray down by the
clock?
What about a virus scan? Malware scans too? Perhaps a webbrowser "helper"
that's doing this? Helpers aren't always helpful.

Well, none of the items you spoke of were the cause of my issue. I do
appreciate your help but I had to go back to "factory load" and reinstall all
my purchased software. That worked!

MediaPlayer >> WMP - just reloads each time I close it down
Sorry you took that drastic measure to resolve it.
I didn't hear back from you on my original question to you so we're not
going to be able to figure out what was causing the issue on your computer.
It's best to always rule out the obvious possibility. For this scenario, that
obvious possibility is a multimedia button on the keyboard being pressed.
If you had come back and answered no, then I would have asked the questions
I asked of Don.
Don's message actually told me that he didn't have a keyboard with a
multimedia buttons (probably after reading my post to you). That's why I
asked the next set of questions.
