How do you change the default directories that Media Center looks for music in? I have a second HD with all my music and media on it. - |

Gosh, it seems like this same question gets asked almost on a daily basis.
May I invite you to search the newsgroups for the same question before asking it again. In any case, My Music is very easy as Media Center actually gets music information from Media Player. Media Player can add references to files from anywhere on your network and from multiple locations so you're all set. It also derives its playlists from Media Player so you may edit them using MP as well. With regards to My Pictures and My Videos you can simply drop shortcuts to folders from elsewhere into them and Media Player will see them. Re:How do you change the default directories
Another approach is to change the default folder locations to another area
using TweakUI for Windows XP (www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp)" >www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp) under My Computer/Special Folders. We have found this to be useful when configuring multiple MCE machines using different shared locations for videos, pictures, and music by simply pointing them to mapped drives (we use M: for Music, P: for Pictures, and V: for Videos), which are shares on a content server (or you can do it as shares on each machine to distribute the disk utilization if you are not using a server). Although it is not a biggie, it also eliminates the need to have to click an extra time to go into the shortcut folder. Since My Music seems to be less forgiving from within MCE, this method tends to be a little more reliable and a little less work for the user. As a side note, TweakUI also makes it easy to have the machine log in automatically as the MCE user for those machines dedicated to serving up the MCE UI (under Login/Autologin).
